Social-Emotional Functioning (Layla/AM section) At present, Layla is highly self critical and shows an excessive level of self concern

(ego index/MMPI-2/LSE/DEP). She may, at times, engage in positive or adaptive self exploration (FD), but appears to also indulge in painful negative introspection (SumV) and ruminate on what she perceives as her many faults (MMPI-7/OBS/ANX). She may have a fragmented sense of self (H:(H)+Hd+(Hd)), be preoccupied with feelings of vulnerability (HVI) and have many physical complaints (MMPI-1/HEA). Projective data reveals a pervasive sense of herself as deeply overwhelmed, confused and fragile (SC#48,57/TAT#1). One of her stories describes a character as having a "broken body and a broken spirit and unable to accept herself and her overwhelming imperfections (TAT#3BM)." Layla may have a general difficulty with social relationships that prevent her from developing and maintaining mature bonds with others (CDI/MMPI 0/SOD). Layla currently tends to withdraw from interacting with others as she may expect interactions to contain aggressiveness and hostility (AG). She may also have difficulties clarifying the boundaries of personal relationships (PHR). She tends to view others cynically and appears to have a generally mistrusting attitude and feel highly vulnerable (HVI/MMPI-CYN). Although Layla typically reaches out to others when she is stressed (EB) she may currently feel to overwhelmed to do this (low H). She may also be feeling substantial interpersonal anxiety(MMPI-7). Layla's projective data may reveal a sense of longing and regret related to relationships and she may have given up on seeking opportunities for satisfying connections and/or close relationships (SumT/TAT#7BM/Background). The level of Layla's emotional turmoil and distress is critical now and her emotional responses are currently quite primitive (Pure C/MMPI-F). There is also suggestion that she is overwhelmed by psychological complexities (Blends:R) and tends to hold in negative emotion rather than express it (SumC:WSumC). It is likely that she feels acutely sad and hopeless (MMPI2/DEP/tree). She, in fact, shared "I just sit around at night and sometimes I cry for no reason" (Afr). She may be experiencing pain not only from her recent divorce and loss of a former husband, but also profound guilt related to relinquishment of her son (MMPI7/background/SC#69). She may feel anxious and have substantial difficulty concentrating (MMPI-7/ANX/SC#57). Although, Layla has expressed significant suicidal ideation and may be harboring a significant amount of anger, present testing indicates there is not an immediate threat (MMPI-2/9/background/S/S-CON). Test data indicates that although Layla has an extratensive coping style and usually uses external resources; reaching out to others when she is stressed, she may be too overwhelmed to do this now. (EB) She is currently in a coping deficit (EA-es). Layla currently has a very poor ability to cope with unexpected stress (Ror-es) due to the presence of overwhelming painful affect which includes holding in negative emotion (C) and painful negative introspection (V). Her ability to cope is also compromised by the presence of overwhelming needs (FM) and anxiety (m). Furthermore her ability to cope, both chronically and currently, is severely diminished and she

has lower than expected resources to cope with external demands (Ror- D/AdjD). She has general difficulty not only with social ties but also with functioning in a complex world (RorCDI). In fact, withdrawal from social interactions (MMPI-0/SOD/SC#49) may help her maintain a fragile state of equilibrium. Her tendency to ruminate in a negative manner may provide her with a false sense of control over her concerns (Ror-SumV/MMPI-7/ANX/FRS/OBS). She has a tendency to be very emotionally reactive as opposed to generally defensive (Ror-Lambda). Despite Layla's high level of distress (MMPI-F/background) and diminished ability to concentrate (TAT#57/behavioral obs) she does not appear to display disturbed or disorganized thinking (XA%/WDA%/MMPI-6/8/9). Although primary projective data indicates some degree of idiosyncratic and creative thinking (X+%/Xu%), Layla demonstrates a high level of conventional responding (P) with negligible levels of loose associations and minor language slippage (INCOM/DV). She may, however, currently evaluate herself and her world through an acutely negative lens that magnifies her pain and hopelessness (MMPI-2/CYN). She does not display potential thought disorder (Sum6/WSum6).
