The End

Question 1 A Le Tour De Langkawi will be world famous cycling championship event that takes place annually in Malaysia. Many countries from all over the world participate in the event. In conjunction with the Le Tour de Langkawi 2011, the Tourism Ministry of Malaysia has appointed Peoples Media Sdn Bhd to build a multimedia application to inform, promote and encourage masses to come forward to participate or support the event. Peoples Media Sdn Bhd is a software company that specializes in delivering multimedia presentations for government and private agencies and has been in the business for the past 10 years.

As the newly appointed Promotion Director of Peoples Media Sdn Bhd, it will be clearly understood that the objective will be to come up with a brief proposal on how the multimedia application will be to be presented. In view to make the application encouraging and informative to the public, many multimedia elements must be included. Theoretically, objective, concept, identifying target users, using suitable tone, approach, metaphor, navigation, emphasis, interactivity and coherence must be applied in the multimedia presentation.

The objective of the presentation will be to inform public of the event that will be held soon. Matters pertaining to the event such as details of where the race will be held, list of riders, route of the event, rewards given out for the winners and contact details of the event organisers will be included. With this information, users can either participate in the event as a rider, watch the event as a spectator or simply be informed of the event. So the presentation must be designed to be informative rather than an advertisement.

The concept will be presented in a multimedia presentation form. It should be able to be published on web so that there will be a wide coverage and wider reach out for publicity. Since the deadline will be nearing soon, the presentation project must be planned, developed, tested and implemented a soon as possible. Therefore it requires a team of expert developers to help develop the presentation from scratch before the tightly scheduled deadline. The experts should also be able to quote the required hardware and

necessary software for the development of the presentation. The hardware and software required must be compatible with each other and flexible enough to run on any platform. This is simply should allow users to view the presentation from any kind of platform.

The multimedia presentation mainly must be designed and developed to target audience above 18 years of age, sports personalities and web users. This will be because, these groups of people can either participate, observe and even can help disseminate information about the event to others who are not web users. The group of audience also helps to upkeep the spirit of the event by many web postings, emailing and blogging spreading information all over the web and all over the world.

We shall now look at the proposal to understand how the multimedia application will be presented with all elements mentioned above. Overall, the presentation should use at least 5-7 interfaces with lots of interactivity in it. As such the case, it will be being recommended that the authoring software, Adobe Director version 11 will be used although version 11.5 seems to be the latest. This will be because, Adobe Director 11.5 version will be not user proven yet and the presentation cannot take risk of using a nonuser proven software, as this will be a worldwide event with many views. Moreover, its features and functions, which are like cost-effective, ability to be distributed on Internet feature, interactivity feature that allows users to have full control over the contents, strong editing feature that allows editing of graphics, text, animation, audio, video and ability to run on both Windows and Macintosh platforms are definitely a strong recommendation as to why the Adobe Director will be chosen.

Coming to the content of the presentation, there will be one main interface with wellconnected sub-interfaces. It will basically display the event name, objective, main sponsors and navigational controls on the main interface. These navigational controls are to take users to the second level of the interface. Then the second level will be attached to the third level interface to show more information that cannot be compiled into second level of interface. The breaking up of the content into various third level interfaces will be also to ensure that the interface screens are not cluttered with information. A couple of

video presentations will be added to give the users a good view of the subject matter. Music and songs will be added to the presentation to give good hearing effects and to keep the users more focused.

Lets look at the details of each interface and multimedia elements used in each interface to convey message and guidance to users. But just before that lets look at the appendix 1 that will be attached behind the proposal to view the briefly the interfaces, levels and connections. The appendix will provide a good understanding of how the presentation be designed. 1st Interface On the first screen, it will show a cyclist graphic in the centre, logos of main sponsors, title of the event, brief narration of the event and navigational controls that can take the users to the second level of the interface. A good set of vibrant color combinations will be used to bring out the animation and text used in the interface and not forgetting the background music. On the extreme right of the screen, the navigational controls that are in the form of Push Button will be placed to show the second level interface contents. These buttons are like Race button to show the details of the races date, time and venue, Riders button to display list of countries participating, Route button to show the path of the race, Rewards button to show the prizes given and Reach button to show the contact details of the organisers. When these buttons are pushed or clicked, they will open up the second level of the interface with more details. For example, when the Race push button will be clicked, it will display the details of the event to be held. The text will show the date, time and venue of the event. Then just below that text information, a video clipping on a compilation of event shots will be displayed automatically. Users need not click any button to stop or pause. This clipping will be downloaded from any related website so it need not be prepared, no cost and saves time. There will be two navigational control buttons will be placed just below the video clipping one will be a Main push button and the other will be Next push button. The Main push button will be designed to take the user to main interface and the Next push button will take the user to the next

interface in this case it will display riders. Beethovens Symphony music will be added as the background music to give a grand hearing with smooth finishing.

2nd Interface The next interface that focuses on Riders will have Radio buttons with continents name in it. When each of this radio buttons are clicked, it will display a third level screen with countries/states participating in the event. The third level screen will be purely test based without any animation or graphic however there will be background music. A Return push button will be added so that users can choose to return to the main Riders screen. On the Riders screen, there will be three navigational controls Main, Prev and Next push buttons. The Main button when clicked will take the user to the main interface, the Next push button when pressed will display Route interface and Prev push button when clicked will take the user to Race screen. There will be a video presentation attached to the screen and will only run if the option will be clicked upon. This short video clipping will be about participating team announcement by the organisers. This interface will come with an additional push button Return which when clicked, will take the user to Riders interface. This clipping will be extracted from the organisers video library at zero cost and in no time. Although the clipping will be short and not much can be previewed, it will at least give out the feel of the environment to the users. Beethovens Serenade music will be added in the interface that makes the user feel relaxed along with pre-recorded commentary for the video clipping. 3rd Interface The following interface will be all about the route of the event. It will be presented in a video format so that the users will have a better understanding and view. As the event goes on for 10 days, it has been divided into 10 stages each having from and to venue, distance to cover and path. It will be too much for the users to see and understand if text will be used to present the information therefore a video presentation on the route will be

displayed. It will be a choice given to the user to click to view or not to view the video. An option to return to the Route interface will also be given during the video running so the user can exit from the video clipping. Prior to running the video, as a backdrop, a photograph of cyclists will be displayed with no action. The Route interface will have Next, Prev and Main push buttons Next button takes the user to Rewards screen, Prev push button takes the user to Route screen and the Main push button takes the user to the main interface. A recent Olympic song will be played in the background of the Route screen and pre-recorded commentary will be played when the video will be clicked. Here again, the video will be extracted from the organisers video library collection at zero cost. 4th Interface The continuing interface will be about the Rewards. A graphic concept will be adapted here to display the prizes trophy, bouquet of flowers, certificate and cash, because it will be more colorful, eye-catching and attractive. Using the real pictures of the rewards will not be as effective as the graphics due to the color combination. Detailed explanation will be not necessary here, as it becomes more text based and boring. The users can contact the organisers or visit the website for more information on the rewards. Again, navigation controls like Next, Prev and Main push buttons will be provided for the users to have control over the presentation slides. A soothing song will be added in the background to give the feel of after battle and before rewards. 5th Interface The last interface will be on contact information. Since too much text will be involved to display telephone numbers, fax numbers, web site address, email address and postal address, a graphic interface will be adopted. Again a few interfaces will be included as a third level to show the details in text and graphic format for each contact point. For example, a clipart of telephone, fax, post box, web and email will be shown on the Reach interface. When the telephone icon is clicked, it will take the user to another screen to display the telephone number of the organisers. It will be the same concept for fax icon, email icon, post box icon and web site icon. Upon clicking on any of these

icons, next level screen will appear displaying respective contact information for the users to use. It will be more of a clean screen without much text displayed. And each third level screen will have a Return push button to exit the screen and return to Route screen. The Route screen will have now only Prev and Main push buttons to take the user to the Reward screen or the main screen. Since this will be a last information screen, the Next button will omitted. As usual, music with song will be added to give a feel good atmosphere.

The above would be the most recommended proposal as to how the multimedia presentation will be developed later on. It complies with all multimedia features as it has video, audio, text, animation and graphics.

Overall, the tone to be used will be a mix of formal and light. Information will be presented formally and graphics are introduced wherever possible to keep the momentum light even though video clippings, pre-recorded commentaries and static images are added. We must remember that it will be a sport event and must be designed sportingly to gain support from the users. A light music will be added wherever possible to give a smooth atmosphere.

A simple approach tactic will be applied to use the presentation. There will not be any instructions used except for the navigational controls, which are basically the Next, Prev, Main, Return and Click to View Video that will guide the users. These controls are commonly used. It uses simple English instructions so international users easily understand it too.

A lot of metaphor will be used such as clipart wherever possible to make the users who are not even computer literate to use the presentation without difficulty. For example in the last interface, telephone clipart icon is used to describe contacting organisers using telephone and so on. This allows the presentation to have much less text and more action pictures. It will look attractive to have lots of animation on the interface instead of text.

Much emphasis will be given in each slide as per the corresponding push button in the main interface screen. Lots of video, summary text, controls, graphics, music and background color will be emphasized upon to make the presentation look more attractive and informative.

All the interfaces will interact with one another with the use of navigational controls. The push button controls like Next, Main, Prev, Return, Click to view video are simple controls that work hand in hand with the interfaces to show the promising interactivity in the presentation. It is very important in the presentation to have interactivity so to have continuity otherwise lot of ambiguity and irregularities will show up making the presentation look less smart and less informative.

The coherence principal will be applied as to eliminate unimportant information from the presentation, which directly means that only relevant information will be focused upon and delivered through the multimedia presentation. This is simply because, the presentation will be broadcasted via the Internet and lot of viewers will be only interested in relevant information regarding the event. Above all, it only makes sense to provide accurate, sufficient and reliable information for an international event like this so to get good support for its promotion.

In summary, all the mentioned multimedia elements will be applied in the presentation to deliver an effective multimedia presentation. It is very much hoped that the presentation with its clear objectives and presentation concept will be able to capture the attention of any user worldwide.
