Answer all questions (Question # 1 : (20 marks

What are the advantages of using ACSR conductors for overhead lines? (3-marks) 1-2. Why we need insulators in overhead power lines? (3marks) A 60-Hz, three-phase line with one ACSR Bluejay conductor per phase has flat horizontal spacing of 7 m between adjacent conductors. Compare the per phase (i) resistance (/km), (ii) inductance (H/km) and (iii) capacitive reactance (.km) of this line with that of a line using a two-conductor bundle of ACSR Partridge with 7 m spacing between adjacent bundles. The spacing between conductors in the bundle is 40 cm. (14-marks)

Question #2 (20 Marks)

2-1. A single core coaxial cable is 6 km long has a capacitance of 0.22 F per km. The relative permittivity of the dielectric material is 3.0. The diameter of the inner conductor is 1.4 cm and the supply voltage is 69 kV (line to line), 60 Hz. Calculate (i) the outer diameter of the cable, (ii) the voltage gradient at the surface of the inner conductor and (iii) the voltage gradient at the surface of the outer conductor, and (iv) total charging current of the cable. (10-marks). 2-2. The series impedance and shunt admittance of a 480-km, 60 Hz, long transmission line are as follows: Z = 0.3+j0.4 /km Y = 0 + j4.27 x 10-6 S/km. Determine the value of the required shunt reactor that will compensate 50% of the total shunt admittance. Also find ABCD constants of this reactor. (10-marks).

Question #3 (20 Marks)

In the power network shown in Fig (1), each of the two generators is rated 30 MVA, 13.8 kV, and 0.9522 reactance. Each of the four motors is rated 15 MVA, 12.5 kV, and 2.083 reactance. Each of the two transformers is rated 60 MVA, 13.2 kV/132 kV, and 29 reactance on the high voltage side. The transmission line's series reactance is 80 ohms.
