Surviving in the Semester System

Work consistently Keep up with class work, assigned readings, assignments, projects etc. Do not delay work, it will only add up and become too hard to handle. Remember: You are evaluated throughout the semester.

A World of Computers
What is computer literacy?
Knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses Computers are everywhere

What Is a Computer?
How is a computer defined?
Electronic device operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory Processes data into information
Data that is organized, meaningful, and useful

Accepts data
Raw facts, figures, and symbols

Produces and stores results

11 12

What Is a Computer?

Parts of the Computer System

Computer have four parts

A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of instructions (software) stored in its own memory unit, that can accept data (input), manipulate data (process), and produce information (output) from the processing.
13

Hardware Software Data User

14

Parts of the Computer System

Hardware
Mechanical devices in the computer Anything that can be touched

Why Is A Computer So Powerful?

Speed
The ability to perform the information processing cycle with amazing speed.

Software
Tell the computer what to do Also called a program Thousands of programs exist

Reliability
Low failure rate

Accuracy
Give accurate results

Data
Pieces of information Computer organize and present data

Storage
Ability to store huge amounts of data and information.

Users
People operating the computer Most important part Tell the computer what to do
15

Communication Power
Ability to communicate with other computers.
16

How Does a Computer Know what to do?

It must be given a detailed list of instructions, called a computer program or software, that tells it exactly what to do. Before processing a specific job, the computer program corresponding to that job must be stored in memory (RAM). Once the program is stored in memory the computer can start the operation by executing the program instructions one after the other.

Summary
We have studied and understood:
