a.) What is 5s?

>>> The 5S Process, or simply "5S", is a structured program to systematically achieve total organization, cleanliness, and standardization in the workplace. A well-organized workplace results in a safer, more efficient, and more productive operation. It boosts the morale of the workers, promoting a sense of pride in their work and ownership of their responsibilities. >>>"5S" was invented in Japan, and stands for five (5) Japanese words that start with the letter 'S': Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke. An equivalent set of five 'S' words in English have likewise been adopted by many, to preserve the "5S" acronym in English usage. These are: Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustaining Self-discipline. Some purists do not agree with these English words they argue that these words have lost the essence of the original 5 Japanese words. Seiri Seiton Seiso Seiketsu Shitsuke - Sort: Clearing the work area - Set in Order: Designating locations - Shine: Cleanliness & workplace appearance - Standardize: Everyone doing things the same way - Sustain: Ingraining the 5S's into the culture

b.) What are the things that must be done in 5s?

Sort: Clearing the work area Any work area should only have the items needed to perform the work in the area. All other items should be cleared (sorted out) from the work area. Set in Order: Designating locations

Everything in the work area should have a place and everything should be in its place. Shine: Cleanliness & workplace appearance Not only should the work area be clear, it should also be clean. Cleanliness involves housekeeping efforts, improving the

appearance of the work area, and even more importantly, preventive housekeeping - keeping the work area from getting dirty, rather than just cleaning it up after it becomes dirty. Standardize: Everyone doing things the same way Everyone in the work area and in the organization must be involved in the 5S effort, creating best practices and then getting everyone to "copy" those best practices the same way, everywhere, and every time. Work area layouts and storage techniques should be standardized wherever possible. Sustain: Ingraining the 5S's into the culture It's tough to keep a 5S effort, or any improvement effort for that matter, going. The 5S's involve a culture change. And to achieve a culture change, it has to be ingrained into the organization - by everyone at all levels in the organization.

c.) If you are given a chance, what department in PLM will you apply the 5s? If I were given a chance to apply the 5s in any department in PLM, I would apply it in The University Clinic

I would do so because first of all the clinic should the most sanitized and organized place in the school. This is where the students are taken care of in times of having health problems that need immediate care. The problem in our University clinic is that the places such as where the interview, check-up and diagnosis are being held are mixed up. Also the dental part of the clinic is just a whisper away from the other rooms. All the rooms in the clinic are just separated by a divider which doesnt even reach the ceiling so every noise in every room is heard all at once creating noise pollution which is not good for a place where in sick patients are taken care of. The medicine cabinets are a problem too, because every time I seek help in the clinic I can see that the table where the records are situated also contains the drawer for the medicines, which as I have noticed contains other stuff (ball pen, paperclips, etc.) aside from the one stated. So therefore this place needs the aid of the 5s, starting with sorting. We should clear the whole area of things not related to our clinic such as: trash, expired medicine, broken chairs, etc. After that, we should organize all things in proper places like medicines in proper medicine cabinet, dental tools in the dentistry room, and also fixing the dividers must be prioritized, it will help in regulating noise and it will increase privacy in every quarters. Next, is making sure that everything is clean and neat. We should always make sure that the clinic itself is clean so we can avoid spreading of bacteria and adding further harm to the patients. Lastly we should maintain all the changes weve made and discipline ourselves by practicing all of the 5s regularly. It will help improve our beloved clinic a lot.
