FINAL EXAMINATION IN SOCIOLOGY

Instruction: Provide the best possible answer in the following scenario. Answer in essay form. Answer logically and be imaginative and be socially conscious. Printed, 12 Font, Use Verdana, Justified. Final submissions on March 27, 2012.

1. Race and Ethnicity. (25 points) Situation: Imagine you are an applicant looking for a job in a prestigious company. You are one of the two applicants applying for a managerial position. You are a graduate from a well-known university, a cum laude honoree, and possessing competitive skills that are valuable t the company. Your competitor is a graduate from a well known university, magna cum laude and possessed far better skills than you do, but she is of Aeta Origin, dark skinned and kinky haired. Interview came and qualification assessment is done, and the results are in. You are hired. Is there a discrimination committed on the part of the company? Explain your answer. How would you react and act on the actions committed by the company? To further understand the issue, explain what is: a. discrimination, b. merit system. Is discrimination rampant in the Philippine society? How do you think we as a community address this problem of discrimination and prejudice?

2. Population and Development (25 points) Situation: Imagine you are a Congressman (for female students, imagine you are a man)in your district. You are proposing and sponsoring a bill promoting the use of contraceptives between sexual partners to curb the population problem in your community and the whole country. It has been found out in the news that you and your wife are expecting your tenth child this coming May. Further news reports and gossip columns reveal that you are expecting another child from another woman. What would be your next course of action, would you pursue with the sponsorship of the bill or would you back down? Or would there be another course of action you would like to take? How do you characterize the congressman?

To further understand the issue, explain: a. what is/are the purpose(s) of population policy programs. Birth control mechanisms are abundant in the Philippines. Describe each population control method. Qualify the advantage and disadvantage of each mechanism.

3. Social Change (25 points) Situation: 26 years after the First EDSA Revolution, the Philippines had undergone some changes, notably the change from a dictatorial government to a more democratic form of government. Observe your surroundings, your community, your nation, how was life different from 15 years ago? Note and explain the changes in (give concrete examples): a. language; b. technology; c. economy and economic opportunities and realities; d. politics; e. art, music, tv and movies; and f. social interactions (between family members, friends, classmates).

In general, has the change that great or non-existent? Or is there no change at all? To further understand the issue, explain what are: a. social change, and b. the different characteristics of social change.

4. Urban Communities (25 points)

Situation: Imagine you are a city mayor, the leader of the biggest city in the Philippines. You are faced with big problems such as: illegal settlers (squatters), crime, and pollution. How would you solve these problems? Give concrete plans and programs to combat each problem.
