Easter Message Egg Salad

Big Idea: Easter is all about making Egg Salad. You cannot leave out the main ingredient or it will not work. Materials: Bowl, bread, pepper, salt, carrots, mashed boiled eggs, spoon, loaf of bread, cups, drink, relish, mustard, plastic eggs and some food items for game below. Easter Music Selections: God's Kids Worship: A Basket of Easter Songs, Split-Track DVD (any songs from DVD) www.godskidsworship.com An additional song is attached at end of this lesson. Bible Verse: He is not here; he has risen Luke 24:6a Bible Memory Game Draw a tic-tac-toe outline on a dry erase board. Sticky Tac a large colorful paper egg in each section. Under several of the eggs will be written the words Resurrection. Allow the kids to come up and select one. If the word resurrection is under the egg they all say the verse together. If it is blank they sing Jesus Loves Me. Only have maybe a couple blanks in order that they do not have to sing the song too much.

Message: Have you ever helped your mom make egg salad? Lets try and see here..I have a bowl, and will put in some salt, a couple high spoonfuls of mannaise, a big squirt of mustard, a large spoon of pickled relish and maybe a dash of pepper. Oh, I almost forgot the shredded carrots. That will make it good! Yummy! Now lets mix all this together. Yuck! Does this look like egg salad to you? Does it smell like egg salad? What is the matter? What! You mean I forgot the eggs. I am not thinking. Where did I put those eggs? I seehere they are. (Dump eggs into bowl) Wow! I did miss something leaving these out. Now I will stir it all up and then you can take a look. Does this look more like egg salad? Yes, I think so, too. Here lets taste it and see. I will take a slice of bread here and put a layer of the egg salad on for you to try. (Pass out each child a pocket book egg salad sandwich, and give them a glass of water or juice). Easter is something like this. How is Easter like egg salad you may think? That sounds crazy, and does not make any sense. During Easter, what are some of the things that we do? We go on egg hunts, visit the Easter bunny, and maybe purchase some yellow chicks. We go to shopping and buy some new clothes (some of us at least) or maybe a new pair of shoes. Some people even purchase a hat and gloves to wear. Did we leave anything out? Oh yes, some kids may get up on Sunday morning and find out someone left a basket of candy and all kinds of yummy treats on the kitchen table with your name on the basket. Anything else? I know, we may make special candy like peanut butter eggs or taffy. Easter is such fun! Now what have we forgotten? Can anyone think? There is still one more ingredient that we have left out of Easter. Right! Jesus Resurrection! That is the most important ingredient. Even if we add all the other good stuff to make Easter, without the Resurrection it is not really Easter, is it? Easter is about Jesus Resurrection. When he died on the cross and was buried in the grave, He did not stay there. He arose from the grave. It is through His life that we have life. We can be

forgiven of all our sins because He died on the cross for those sins. We can have a hope of heaven, because He returned to prepare a place for us after His Resurrection. Isnt that wonderful! Small Group or Large Group Discussion Questions: 1. What are all the ingredients for making Egg Salad? 2. What is the most important ingredient for Easter? 3. How can we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus? 4. Why did Jesus die on the cross? 5. What do we need to do in order to get to heaven?

Resurrection Skit Cast may be either: two youth or two puppets Todd: Did you hear the news about that resurrection a few months ago? Jeremy: No, what news? Todd: The news about the strange resurrection? Jeremy: Oh that, yeah I heard all about that. That place sure looks spooky. Todd: Not the haunted mansion. The real resurrection about Jesus coming back to life. Jeremy: You mean CPR? Todd: Jesus was put in the grave and came out of it. Jeremy: Youre kidding. When my grandmother died we were all in the hospital room, and she came back twice after her heart had stopped beating. They had to put her on a respirator. It was

really strange to see it. Just like that. When they took the respirator off her, she died. The doctor said her brain had little activity. Todd: I am sorry, that must have been a really hard decision for you and your family. Jeremy: It was, but when I went to bed that night it felt kind of spooky her gone and all. I know she whet to heaven, so that makes me feel better. Todd: This resurrection was about the Jesus who did all those miracles Jeremy: I could use one. My homework is not completed since I stayed up late watching a movie last night. Im in big trouble, and could use a miracle right now. Todd; It doesnt work that way. Jesus did miracles to help people like heal the blind, and those who could not hear. Jeremy: Awesome! My dad needs hearing aids that we cant afford. How does he get a miracle ear? Todd: Sometimes, God provides in ways for us that we cannot imagine when we go to him in prayer about it. There are times he says no and other times yes. Sometimes, we have to wait and save up our money and get what we need. He will help us. Jeremy: Ill tell my dad so he can save his money for a miracle ear. Our money jar is empty right now. Todd: Jesus helps us like he did the people all around him. Then, some of the leaders got jealous of him and wanted him crucified. Jeremy: Did anyone call the FBI?

Todd: The leaders were over everyone including people like the FBI. Once a year the people had the opportunity to release a prisoner. Jeremy: You mean go scot free? Todd: It was the custom. The people did not want Jesus to go free, so they let a criminal named Barabbas go free. Jeremy: That sucks! My dad said those cops sit on the roadside waiting every day to see if he speeds. Maybe they should put more people in jail instead. Todd: They have to make sure our neighborhoods are a safe place because speeders can hit people with their cars. Anyhow, they took Jesus, and nailed on to a cross. Jeremy: Than why do people wear them around their necks if Jesus was crucified on a cross? Todd: Maybe it reminds them of Jesus and why he did it. They may feel his protection. Jeremy: You mean he let the people nail him to a cross? Im not going to ask for any pain; I get it anyhow when I get in trouble at school. My dad gives it to me when I get home. Todd: Jesus died on the cross to shed his blood that we may be forgiven of our sins upon confession. Jeremy: Thats interesting. Todd: He was placed in a grave for three days, and arose from the grave coming right out of the tomb. Jeremy: You're kidding. Did he smell? When my dog died, we kept him for a week before we could bury him because we were

on vacation. The smell was unimaginable. We found him when we got home. Todd: I doubt that he stank. But the guards were sure scared. People were frightened and amazed when they heard the news. Jeremy: Where did they hear it? We do not get the newspaper, and our radio has not been working. Todd: News like that will travel wide. The women who came to the tomb found out; then, the disciple came and found Jesus gone. I am sure the guards went straight to tell the governor. He probably paid them to keep quiet about it. Jeremy: Like a million bucks? Todd: I dont know, but they would not want news like that to circulate. It would make them look bad. Jeremy: Where did Jesus go? Todd: He went and met the disciples in the upper room and ate. Jeremy: Ghosts eat? Todd: Jesus did. Thomas, one of his disciples was not there; so, he did not believe the disciples when they told him Jesus had been there. Jeremy: I wouldnt have believed it either. People just dont come back for the dead. My grandmother is in the same cemetery she was placed five years ago. We take her flowers every holiday it seems. Todd: Jesus was the Son of God, and he can do anything. It was all part of Gods plan. God is his Father. Jeremy: Where is he now?

Todd: Jesus went back to heaven to prepare a place for us so we can go there when we die. Jeremy: You have to die to go to heaven? Todd: Yes, you do unless you are here when he returns the second time. He is coming again and will take all those who believe on Him. Jeremy: Like a parachute. I always wanted to ride in one of those. Todd: In the twinkling of an eye we will disappear to be with him just like that (Snaps fingers) Jeremy: I think Ill get ready. Should I pack something? Todd: No, Jesus will have all we need in heaven. He owns everything. Jeremy: Ok. Ill get ready, but I could I pray first? I want to be ready when Jesus returns. Todd: Sure we can do that.
