This study helps to make a managerial decision to the company. This study was conducted with the employees of Dr. Lal PathLabs, a very well-known clinical pathology company. The employees were given questionnaires, which had 10 questions relating to their job satisfaction and they had to tick the boxes of their choice. Finally, they were asked to suggest a few points which they would like to change about their job and its environment, if given a chance. From this survey, it was founded that most of the employees of the observed company were satisfied with their job as they had given very positive answer to the question asked about their job satisfaction. But, in addition to this, we also come to know that there are several other factors which the employees are dissatisfied with, such as their pay package and benefits. If the company can increase these essentials, the employees may be even more attached to their work and thus can prove to be a great advantage for the company in its future. Thus it can be concluded from this project that there are several factors that affect an employees motivation to his work in the company. If these factors are appropriately fulfilled by the organization, the employees will be more interested in their work and thus be very helpful for the organization to achieve its objectives at the earliest in the future.

Introduction

Job satisfaction describes how content an individual is with his or her job. It is a relatively recent term since in previous centuries the jobs available to a particular person were often predetermined by the occupation of that persons parent. There are a variety of factors that can influence a persons level of job satisfaction. Some of these factors include the level of pay and benefits, the perceived fairness o the promotion system within a company, the quality of the working conditions, leadership and social relationships, the job itself (the variety of tasks involved, the interest and challenge the job generates, and the clarity of the job description/requirements). The happier people are within their job, the more satisfied they are said to be. Job satisfaction is not the same as motivation, although it is clearly linked. Job design aims to enhance job satisfaction and performance methods include job rotation, job enlargement and job enrichment. Other influences on satisfaction include the management style and culture, employee involvement, empowerment and autonomous workgroups. Job satisfaction is a very important attribute which is frequently measured by organizations. The most common way of measurement is the use of rating scales where employees report their reactions to their jobs. Questions relate to relate of pay, work responsibilities, variety of tasks, promotional opportunities the work itself and co-workers. Some questioners ask yes or no questions while others ask to rate satisfaction on 1 5 scale where 1 represents not all satisfied and 5 represents extremely satisfied).

History
One of the biggest preludes to the study of job satisfaction was the Hawthorne studies. These studies (1924-1933), primarily credited to Elton Mayo of the Harvard Business School, sought to find the effects of various conditions (most notably illumination) on workers productivity. These studies ultimately showed that novel changes in work conditions temporarily increase productivity (called the

Page 4

Hawthorne Effect). It was later found that this increase resulted, not from the new conditions, but from the knowledge of being observed. This finding provided strong evidence that people work for purposes other than pay, which paved the way for researchers to investigate other factors in job satisfaction. Scientific management also had a significant impact on the study of job satisfaction. Frederick Winslow Taylors 1911 book, Principles of Scientific Management, argued that there was a single best way to perform any given work task. This book contributed to a change in industrial production philosophies, causing a shift from skilled labor and piecework towards the more modern approach of assembly lines and hourly wages. The initial use of scientific management by industries greatly increased productivity because workers were forced to work at a faster pace. However, workers became exhausted and dissatisfied, thus leaving researchers with new questions to answer regarding job satisfaction. It should also be noted that the work of W.L. Bryan, Walter Dill Scott, and Hugo Munsterberg set the tone for Taylors work. Some argue that Maslows hierarchy of needs theory, a motivation theory, laid the foundation for job satisfaction theory. This theory explains that people seek to satisfy five specific needs in life physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, self-esteem needs, and self-actualization. This model served as a good basis from which early researchers could develop job satisfaction theories.

Findings
The answers received during the survey were documented in a tabulated form. The following were the findings obtained from the survey. Some people were not employed for the required position in the company as per their qualification. 75 % of the employees were satisfied with their pay package but none of them are highly satisfied. All the employees are highly satisfied with their relationship with their superiors. Thus, a friendly environment can be assumed to be present in this company. Moderate to high levels of stress can be seen in the companys environment. Employees are provided with sufficient flexibility regarding their working hours. The benefits that are provided by the organization are satisfactory for the employees. The employees feel the job is very challenging which shows that they are very energetic to perform their work. Employees are not satisfied with the present position in their company which indicates that the employees are highly satisfied with their job and want to achieve more . A very satisfactory level of team spirit can be seen between the employees, but can be improved to excellence. The employees are not very satisfied with their job security and this could prove to be a very big threat to the companys prospects.

Page 22

Data Interpretation
By observing the data, we come to know about two outcomes. Firstly, the company is focused on encouraging the employees so as to obtain its objectives throughout the organization and secondly , it shows the employees level of interest by working accordingly to achieve the companys goals. It can also be interpreted that most of the employees are quite content with the communication and information flow in the company. This shows that there is an efficient system of information flow within the organization. People enjoy their work if they are having good interpersonal relationships with those people whom they are working with. They may be their colleagues, their subordinates or supervisors. Thus, building a strong interpersonal relationship is very important to increase job satisfaction. It is also an effective way of achieving goals. The employees are more committed and dedicated towards their work if their efforts in achieving the organizational goals are valued. They feel that their presence and importance in the company which ultimately affects the overall satisfaction level of the employees. The data from the survey indicates that the employees are satisfied with the pay scale, benefits and other factors to a good extent. Employees should feel motivated in the jobs that they are performing at the workplace. The degree of motivating is achieved through many ways, that is, interaction with others, job security, personal growth and other factors. Our analysis shows that majority of the employees are moderately happy with the way that the company motivates them. One of the key elements for employees to perform work well is the level of security they feel with their position in the company. If an employee is under the impression that he might get shifted to another position or even might get fired, it is going to affect his/her performance in a negative manner. The analysis shows us that the 50 60 % of the employees are not feeling secured about their position in the company, which is a very threatening issue. Flexibility in working hours and the environment keeps the employees in a positive frame of mind. The results from the research shows us that 80 % of the employees feel that are provided with work time flexibility . One of the most important factors of job satisfaction in an organization is to make the employees feel that they are paid according to their worth. If an employee feels that he/she is under paid. It is going to affect his/her performance. The results show us that most of the employees of the observed company are dissatisfied with their salary as well as their current position in the company. The workers performance ultimately degrades is he/she is given a load of work. Thinking from an employees perspective, an employee will feel that he/she is not efficient at the work which demoralizes him. He will also not be able to work at his best if he is under pressure. The data reveals that the employees of the observed company do face stress at some point or the other but at less frequent times.

Page 23

Conclusion and Recommendations

Through this project, the various levels of job satisfaction between the employees of Dr Lal Pathlabs were understood. From this survey, it has been found that overall all the employees have been provided with an average favourable environment so that they obtain satisfaction for their job. However, this is not enough as the employees are not completely satisfactory towards their work and its environment. As one of the important objective of this project, the level of satisfaction amongst the employees has been found out and it can be said the employees are moderately satisfied with their work environment. There are several factors which affect the job satisfaction such as salary, job security, communication flow etc. Some of these factors are successfully fulfilled by the company, but that is not enough. The employees must be given more satisfaction with his work so that he gets motivated to do more work as well as enjoy it too. Thus it is recommended that company should try to understand their employees and try to figure out what exactly are their needs. Areas of job security, work pressure and job enrichment have to be looked into with seriousness while other areas just needs to be improved. Successful fulfillment of these conditions will ensure that the employees are highly interested and motivated to work for the company. In future, this would prove to be beneficial in achieving the objectives which the company wants to acquire.
