Thermal Bridges

Thermal Bridges occur where there is a change or a break in the building fabric. Windows Doors Junction of Floor and Wall Junction of Wall and Roof

With homes becoming super insulated the heat loss through thermal bridges is now a major source of heat loss in a home This is due to no insulation or very little insulation Thermal Bridges can be easily seen with the use of a thermal imaging camera

In modern or passive buildings thermal bridges are eliminated through good design. Use of modern insulation products; Thermal Blocks, insulation Board, Thermally broken window frames, Triple glazing etc Detail of a traditional house vs. passive house foundation. Yellow blocks are thermal blocks This prevents the loss of heat to the foundation

IsoQuick Raft

The raft is now free from any Thermal Bridges due to the use of Expanded Polystyrene. It also acts a form for the concrete

Window and Door

The window and door are very big areas for thermal bridges. Below is a detail for a window which has eliminated any thermal bridges. Note the following Wide cavity Airthightness barriers Windows with a thermally broken frame (insulation in the window frame) Thermal Cavity closers

Wall and Roof

The junction between the wall and the roof is a critical detail for thermal bridges. This can be improved by ensuring that insulation continues at through the building fabric.

Note the thermal block below and the gutex insulation. Also very importantly the airflow is ventilate the roof timbers in the attic space is maintained
