BENZOYL CHLORIDE

Benzoyl chloride, also known as benzenecarbonyl chloride, is an organochlorine compound with the formula C6H5COCl. It is a colorless, fuming liquid with an irritating odor. It is mainly useful for the production of peroxides but is generally useful in other areas such as in the production of dyes, perfumes, pharmaceuticals, and resins.

PREPARATION

There are several methods to produce benzoyl chloride or benzenecarbonyl chloride. From Benzotrichloride Using Water We can produce benzoyl chloride by reacting benzotrichloride with water. This process is much economical than others due to presence of water as a reactant.

C6H5CCL3 + H2O C6H5COCL + 2 HCL

From Benzotrichloride Using Benzoic Acid It can also be produced by the reaction of benzotrichloride with benzoic acid.

C6H5CCL3 + C6H5CO2H 2 C6H5COCL + HCL

REACTIONS

Benzoyl chloride is a typical acyl chloride. It reacts with alcohols and amines to give the corresponding esters and amides. It undergoes the Friedel-Crafts acylation with arenes to give the corresponding benzophenones. Similarly, it reacts with water to produce hydrochloric acidand benzoic acid: C6H5COCl + H2O C6H5CO2H + HCl

Benzoyl chloride reacts with sodium peroxide to give benzoyl peroxide and sodium chloride: 2 C6H5COCl + Na2O2 (C6H5CO)2O2 + 2 NaCl

AREA OF APPLICATIONS
Benzoyl chloride is used as an intermediate for the manufacture of resins, peroxides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, perfumes and stabilizers. Acetyl chloride was used to Acetofenate. It is widely used as an acetylating agent in the synthesis of fine chemicals, agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. Propionyl chloride is widely used in agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals manufacturing. It is also used as an intermediate for dyes, textile auxiliaries, peroxide compounds. Chloro acetyl chloride is widely used in the Synthesis of Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals

Advantages
Manufacture of Benzoyl chloride with selective acid chlorides as desired. Technology is competitive with cost and quality.
