ed to the new vocabulary from their reading selection. Students use context clues within the reading selection to define their new vocabularies. Standards & Benchmarks: 1.1.2: Uses context and sentence and paragraph structure to determine the meaning of unknown words and words with novel meanings. Materials: Reading texts N/Book Chalkboard/Chalk Xerox Paper Procedures: Read-A-Loud (Students will read the story as a class) 1. Teacher asks oral question after students read parts of the story Pass out Xerox Paper so students can create and complete the Own the Word organizer. The Own the Word organizer contains: Students own definition Synonym Antonym Illustration of the word Using the word in an original sentence Evaluation: 97% completes organizer with an 80% or a better score

3% teachers guidance Assessments: Own the Word Organizer Homework: Using the vocabularies in a short story TUESDAY Objectives: Students identify 10 specific events from the reading selection of the week. Standards & Benchmarks: 1.3.3: Uses outlines, notes, summaries, and/or reports to clarify understanding of a text. Materials: Reading text Chalkboard/Chalk Xerox Paper Crayons/Markers Procedures: Recall: Events Sequence Events are specific actions or proceedings in a story. Have students group read their reading selection (allot 30 minutes for reading) After reading, have students work within their groups to complete a sequence chart based on their reading. Sequence chart should include: 8-10 main events from the reading Organized chronologically Work collaboratively Evaluation: 90% masters objective

10% teachers guidance Assessments: Sequence Chart Homework: WEDNESDAY Objectives: Students write their own questions about their reading selection. Standards & Benchmarks: 1.1.5: Uses prior knowledge, personal experience, and textual evidence (literal and inferred) to construct and answer questions about texts. Materials: Reading Text Line Papers Chalkboard/Chalk Procedures: Inform students that they would be constructing their own questions about the reading while others would try and answer the questions. Developing questions should come from prior knowledge of how questions were asked to them. Allow students to read the story and discuss within their groups what questions they would want to ask. After reading and discussions, each group will get a chance to ask their questions while the other groups attempt to answer. (teacher will facilitate the discussion) Reward each group with a point when answering the questions correctly. Reflect on the activity. Evaluation: 90% masters objective

Standards & Benchmarks: 1.1.1: Applies reading strategies to enhance comprehension. Materials: Reading Text Reading Notebook Chalkboard/Chalk Procedures: Recall story that has been covered from Monday through Wednesday. Ask short answer questions. Have students complete the Respond and Think Critically portion of the stories. Teacher monitors and responds to any student who needs assistance. FRIDAY Objectives: Students are assessed based on the stories that were covered this week. Standards & Benchmarks: 1.1.1: Applies reading strategies to enhance comprehension. Materials: Chalkboard/Chalk Assessment Paper Line Paper Procedures: Assign ten minutes for preparation: Seating Arrangements Pass out Assessment Papers Pass out Line Papers Go through what is on the assessment Remind students of test taking rules Begin Assessment Evaluation: 90% passes assessment with a score of 75% or better Assessments: Story Assessment Homework:
