Not just another news magazine There are several news magazines of which The Independent is the dominant

local political news magazine. There are also others covering specific areas such as business (banking, insurance, tourism, real estate), and sports. And, of course, there are several foreign magazines covering mainly international news. The Uganda Dialogue aspires to be a magazine with a difference. Although it will cover news, the intention is not that it should be another news magazine. Rather, it is envisaged as a debating platform, a forum where public figures from all shades of opinion and from across the political spectrum will have space to articulate their views on matters of public interest. There is not enough talking among the different political elites in this country. There is, however, a great deal of shouting at each other, mainly in accusatory language, from behind their respective political barricades. This form of communication leaves the public largely unaware of what it is that drives Ugandas political elite. In this magazine those with a well-considered view to communicate to the public or to their political counterparts on opposing sides will have the space to do so. This will happen either through articles written and submitted by the persons concerned or, for those without the time to put thoughts on paper, through interviews conducted and transcribed by the magazines skilled and experienced personnel. The magazine will also avail space to individuals within different professions to communicate to the countrys decision makers and the interested public their points of view about the different domains where they operate. This will cover the medical, banking, trading (import, export, retailing) transport, teaching, and other professions. Uganda Dialogue unique proportion There is no magazine on the market today that covers such a broad spectrum of news and issues, and there is none that avails space for actors in these different fields to speak for themselves. The tendency is for journalists to speak for everyone, sometimes in ways that misrepresent. Used properly by the different people whose views it will be targeting, the magazine will offer a unique opportunity especially for the political elite to market their agendas, explain themselves where they have been misunderstood, and challenge popular perceptions of themselves, the political organisations to which they belong and, where applicable, the government they serve. The magazine will be scrupulously non-partisan. How much it serves or is seen to serve the agenda of any particular interest group will depend on how much

that group is willing to use it to do so. In other words those who write regularly or offer interviews proactively will derive maximum benefit by way of reaching the broad public mainly of that section of society that prides itself on being alert to goings-on in the public domain. Uganda Dialogue magazine facilitating National Guidance. The style, content and approach of the magazine is geared towards supporting the objectives of National Guidance since we shall be giving a rational touch to issues at hand. Unlike existing media outlets that are opinioned, give on-the-surface information on topical issues, Uganda Dialogue will take time to redirect the population to the factual details of such national issues. The objectives of the publications in line with national guidance include: 1. Provide public relations to ensure good Government image: As the magazine provides platform for dialogue, contagious national issues will be discussed to clear the air on topics that have created controversy hence creating a justifiable stand for good government image. 2. Effective coverage of government events: We shall be publishing special issues for different international and local government events.
