Lou August
Board of Education At Large
Lets Get Going!

Made Tremendous Contributions to Education - US Secretary of Education

I have worked in every corner of our great country and now work globally. That gives me a unique and critical perspective on how to address our challenges. We cannot use 20th century education solutions to tackle 21st century problems. I have a vision for our future and the experience to make it happen

Learn Anytime from Anywhere

The face of education is being dramatically innovated, but mainly in the developing world and by private education. Both are using technology and new methods for curriculum delivery to provide accredited high-quality education anytime and from anywhere. This is an effort I am involved in every day on a global level. We must dramatically broaden and deepen our curriculum options through cost-saving, on-demand, on-line classes delivered to every home. For families without a PC or Internet, MCPS will provide them at no cost to taxpayers.

My Name is Lou August and I am running for

Montgomery County Board of Education At Large. For the last 28 years I served as a high tech business owner with locations in three states, president of an award winning non-profit serving public education at-risk youth, and now lead global education technology efforts at World Vision International, the largest international non-profit organization in the World. I regularly bring very diverse groups together to create cutting-edge education and economic programs for youth and in the process, have earned some of our nations highest awards for education excellence. I have the skills, experience and vision to tackle our fiscal challenges, make tough decisions, and innovate new education solutions that catapult our children to new heights, enabling them to compete and lead on a global level, all while saving taxpayer dollars.

Work-Based Learning Partnerships

Our area has the largest concentration of business headquarters in the world. Most major non-profits are based here. We are at the doorstep of the largest federal government in the world. We MUST massively leverage these resources NOW for the benefit of our youth and even the business, non-profit and government sectors. I will institute a comprehensive region-wide outreach to secure work-based learning opportunities and internships for every student in MCPS. Just as MCPS must learn to innovate in order to adapt, so must our youth. Middle and high school based entrepreneurship programs provide the ideal venue to teach innovation, business skills, management and leadership. As an international leader in this area, I will create student-run enterprise programs in every middle and high school, most with global partnerships and focus.

About My Family. I am married to Monique, my

wife of 20 years, an educator in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). We have four children that all attended MCPS. Three of our children were enrolled in Spanish immersion programs and are bilingual. One of my children was adopted from Novokuznetsk, Siberia and is in special education. We have lived in the Colesville area for over 8 years, where I created and lead a technology enterprise program at the YMCA of Montgomery County, serve on the Board of the CCNV homeless shelter, volunteer at Brookside Gardens and am active in my church. I received my bachelors degree from the University of Michigan and my MBA from Loyola University in Maryland.

Improve Student Behavior

When visiting schools in the developing world, more stunning than the austerity of their conditions is the great behavior of their students. We must not expect less from our youth if we want to complete! I will positively address student behavioral issues that damage the learning environment for all and burn-out our teachers, including expanding Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports.

Improve Life Skills

Students need a strong life & values experience that the Wilderness can provide without cultural bias. I will reconnect youth to this mighty teacher of our ancestors for their future and for our planet (see www.wildtech.org).
