BUOYANCY CONTROL
1. OBJECTIVE
1.1. This calculation report determines the conditions for the buoyancy control, by means of concrete
jacket, for the Cabiúnas-Vitória gas pipeline.
2. CALCULATION METHOD
2.1. The soils were classified for concrete jacket sizing, according to the types indicated in the following
table:
No4 sieve
with fines
BUOYANCY CONTROL
2.2. The following table shows the parameters to be used for wall thickness calculation of concrete
jacket.

Dry γ soil = 900
Trench γliquid = 1030
FS = 1.50
Where:
γproduct = specific weight of product [kgf/m3]
γsoil = specific weight of submerged soil [kgf/m3]
γliquid = specific weight of liquid (mixture of water and soil) [kgf/m3]
FS = factor of safety
Concrete jacket sizing shall consider dry trench the excavation with a water level less than the one
which causes a thrust for the uncoated pipe equivalent to 95% of pipe weight.
The specific weight of water for thrust calculation shall be 1200 kgf/m3.
3. DATA
3.1. Pipe:
3.2. Concrete:
3.3. Trench:
The minimum pipeline backfilling is 1.0 m, neglecting the extra backfilling soil (20 cm approx.).

4.1. The maximum water level for consider the trench as dry is shown in the following table.
4.2. The following table shows the values, in millimeters, for the wall thickness of concrete jacket for the
pipes in dry or wet trench, according to wall thickness of pipe and concrete specific weight.

5. GENERAL CONDITIONS
5.1. The premises adopted for the calculations, neglect the fluid and soil weights (excluding type A soil,
dry trench). Any study developed by contractor considering γproduct or γsoil different from zero, shall
be based on the conditions where the backfilling soil of trench shows the following characteristics:

- specific weight of backfilling submerged soil shall be equal or greater the 900 kgf/m³;
- backfilling soil shall be coarse-grained type, well graded, presenting some cohesion, without
being very plastic (plasticity index < 6% and liquid limit (LL) < 30%) in order to accept some
compaction;
- FS = 1.50 (for γsoil different from zero).
The studies shall have a numbered MC according to Petrobras standards for documents of detailed
design, and shall be submitted to Petrobras` approval. The tests report of soil shall be attached.
5.3. The specific weight of steel considered in this calculation was 7850 kgf/m3.
