Autonomous Institution under VTU V Semester B. E. Examinations-Dec-09/Jan-10 Telecommunication Engineering Digital Communication Time: 03 Hours Maximum Marks: 100 Instructions to candidates: (i) Answer any FIVE questions choosing three questions from part-A and two questions from part-B. (ii) Use of Q-function tables or error function tables allowed

PART- A 1 a With a neat block diagram, Explain a typical digital communication system b Mention the important advantages and limitations of digital communication over analog communication. c State and prove sampling theorem for low pass signals 2 a Explain pulse modulated PCM-T1 TDM system b The signal g(t) = 10 Cos(20 t) . Cos (200 t) is sampled at the rate of 250 samples/sec. (i) Determine the spectrum of the resulting sampled signal (ii) What is the Nyquist rate for g(t) (iii) What is the cut-off frequency of ideal reconstruction filter c Eight input signals are sampled and time multiplexed using PAM.The time multiplexed signal is passed through a LPF before transmission. Six of the input signals have a bandwidth of 4 KHz and the other two are bandlimited to 12KHz. (i) what is the minimum overall sampling rate if all the signals are sampled at the same rate? (ii) design a asynchronous TDM for this application (iii) compare the transmission bandwidth requirements for (i) and (ii) 3 a Derive the expression for the signal to quantization noise power ratio in the case of PCM. Assume that the amplitude of the signal is uniformly distributed. b A binary data sequence given: 1101001. Sketch the waveform for the following formats (i) NRZ Unipolar (ii) RZ Polar (iii) NRZ Bipolar (iv) Manchester coding c A Speech signal is maximum frequency of 3.4 KHz and amplitude 1 volt is applied to a delta modulator whose bit rate is 20Kbps.Determine minimum step size for the delta modulator for zero slope overload 4 a With a block diagram, explain the principle of detection and estimation b Explain the important properties of matched filter. c A computer given a binary data at the rate of 56Kbps and is transmitted using a baseband PAM system that is designed to have a raised cosine spectrum. Determine the transmission bandwidth required for roll-off rates: =0.25, =0.5, =0.75 and =1.0. 5 a Explain Gram-Schmidt orthogonalisation procedure with an example b What is the importance of equalization? Explain the principle of adaptive equalization c Show that performance wise a correlation receiver and a matched filter are identical. PART-B 6 a Derive an expression for probability of error in BPSK receiver b Binary data is transmitted over a microwave link at a rate of 1 Mbps. It is desired to have avreage probability of error Pe 10-4. Noise PSD is 2x1010
