1. PREFACE
After the Allied landing in Normandy in June 1944, the fate of the Wehrmacht and the Third Reich seemed to be sealed. Apart from Hitler himself, hardly anybody still seriously believed in Germany's final victory; on the Allied side, victory over Nazi Germany was even considered possible by 1944. So the Allies were completely surprised when German resistance stiffened, against all odds, in autumn 1944. The American attempt to break out from the landing area near Avranches in Normandy was nearly cut off by the German Mortain counter-offensive. An attempt to cross the Rhine at an early stage, as planned in Operation Market Garden, failed because the British paratroopers jumped right into the middle of an SS Panzer division at Arnhem. New German weapons, such as the Jagdpanther tanks and the first ME 262 jet fighters, increased the fighting strength of the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe. Huertgen Forest was an ideal defensive terrain for the Germans, while Albert Speer, Reichsminister for armaments, miraculously increased production despite constant Allied air-raids: during the second half of 1944, more weapons were leaving German factories than ever before. In late 1944, in combination with stronger German resistance along the German frontier and overstretched Allied supply-lines, these setbacks convinced the British and Americans that the war could not be ended that year. After their rapid advance in summer 1944, during which they wiped out the German Heeresgruppe Mitte, even the Russians needed a longer break to recover. But nobody was expecting a major German counter-offensive, as the enemy was thought to be too weak. But this is exactly what Hitler had been planning since September 1944 in the form of Operation "Wacht am Rhein". Once again, the Fhrer intended to change the course of events by striking a major blow. Three German armies - the 5th Panzer army, the 6th SS Panzer army and the 7th Army - were to attack from the southern Eifel and the Luxembourg area, curving towards the North and cutting off the American and British troops in southern Holland and north-

eastern Belgium from their rear supply-lines along the NamurAntwerp line. Behind the front line, the Germans collected their best troops and weapons for this offensive. On the 16th of December - a month later than planned - they attacked in icy winter weather. The German advance lasted for nearly ten days, and for a while it looked as if the Wehrmacht would be able to repeat its Blitzkrieg of 1940. With great difficulty, the Americans managed to plug the holes in their defenses and stop the German tanks from breaking out completely. Then the sky cleared, and the Allies were able to bring their feared fighter-bombers into action. They attacked the German columns mercilessly along the narrow, winding, snowy mountain roads of the Ardennes. Within a few days, the offensive collapsed due to a lack of fuel, and by January 1945 the front was back where it had been before the beginning of the German offensive. With Operation "Nordwind" in Alsace, the Germans tried their luck for the last time, but this attack also collapsed. Having finally won the upper hand, the Allies smashed the doorway into the Reich wide open.

2. CAMPAIGNS AND MISSIONS

2.1. Prelude (Normandy and Huertgenwald)
The first campaign deals with the way of the Allied from the beaches of Normandy up to the German border in late summer and autumn of 1944.

2.1.1 Caumont - Mission 1 This mission not only marks the beginning of the story, but is also a kind of tutorial for dealing with the elements of the game. Period of time: Late summer of 1944. Weather: Sunny. Location: Caumont near Mortain in the south of Normandy. Your orders: You are to advance out of the woods and clear the small village of Caumont destroying the enemy's tanks. Your units: A German platoon of Jagdpanther tanks of the 654th Tank Destroyer Batallion. Your opponent: A British tank company of the 6th Guards Tank Brigade with Churchill tanks. Signification: The skirmish at Caumont is of importance, because it showed the allied that the Germans remained serious opponents even after the successful landing in Normandy . Above all the allied

were confronted with one of the new German "wonder weapons", namely the Jagdpanther , which was only at its the beginning. 2.1.2 Mortain - Mission 2 Date: Late summer of 1944. Weather: Sunny. Location: Mortain in the south of Normandy, near the American break-through at Avranches. Your orders: Defend the village of Mortain with all means. Your units: American infantry of the 120th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Division, some anti-tank guns, tank destroyers and an artillery battery. A reserve of tanks is at your disposal. Your opponent: German tanks and tank grenadiers with Panzer IV and Panther tanks. Be aware of the shots from a German battery of Hummel howitzers. Signification: During the fight for Mortain the last German attempt to repel the invasion in Normany (operation Luettich) failed. The Germans were not able to cut the Americans having broken out near Avranches off their supplying lines. Some time later, the Germans themselves were in the boiler of Falaise. 2.1.3 Kall - Mission 3 Period of time: autumn of 1944. Weather: Fog. Location: The idyllic Kall valley in the forest of Huertgen. Your orders: Break through the Kall valley. Your units: The 28th US Infantry Division: American tanks, artillery und tank destroyers. Your opponent: German infantry of the 275th Infantry Division and hidden in bunkers of the Western Wall. Tanks of the 116th Armored division are available as operation reserves. Signification: In the forest of Huertgen, the

Americans threw away the lives of thousands of soldiers without any tangible purpose. The unreasonable order to send a whole division through the narrow Kall valley, is a prime example of this. 2.1.4 Vossenack - Mission 4 Period of time: Autumn of 1944. Weather: Fog, storm and rain. Location: Vossenack, the main village of the Huertgen forest. Your orders: Take Vossenack and defend it against all counterattacks. Your units: Soldiers of the Bloody Bucket Division plus American tanks, artillery and tank destroyers. Your opponent: The Germany infantry (275th Infantry Division) is holding the village; in a counterattack, assault guns and tanks of the 116th Armored division will go into action. Signification: Vossenack was the main village of the Huertgen forest and therefore was subbornly defended by the Germans. The Americans on their part wanted to take the village at all costs and several of their own divisions were destroyed.

2.2 Battle of the Bulge

The main campaign of the game deals with the German Battle of the Bulge, the first eleven missions of the campaign focussing on the German attack and the last two ones concentrating on the defeat of the Germans.

2.2.1 Btgenbach - Mission 5 Date: The 20th of December 1944, at night Location: Domne Btgenbach. Your orders: Defend Domne Btgenbach estate against the German attackers and hinder their advance. Your units: American artillery batteries on the hills, infantry (26th Infantry Regiment) reinforced by anti-tank guns and tank destroyers. Your opponent: German armored infanrty and tanks of the 560th Heavy Tank Destroyer Batallion. Signification: The Domne Btgenbach estate lay directly upon the the German armored divisions route. Therefore, the successful defense was of great importance for the Americans as it considerably hindered the enemys advance.

2.2.2 Losheimergraben - Mission 6 Date: The 16th of December 1944 Weather: A foggy day in winter. Location: the German-Belgian border, Losheimergraben. Your orders: Overcome the American backups and the tank ditch, conquer and secure the road crossing in Losheimergraben and clean the nearby forests. Your units: German infantry of the 48th Rifle Regiment strengthened by assault guns. Your opponent: American infantry (394th Infantry Regiment) strengthened by tank hunters and artillery. Signification: At the Losheimergraben, the attack of the 6th SS Tank Army started - here the Germans crossed the German border for the first time again. 2.2.3 Krinkelt Rocherath - Mission 7 Date: The 16th of December 1944 Weather: A foggy day in winter. Location: The twin-villages of KrinkeltRocherath in Belgium, near the German border. Your orders: Defend the road through the villages towards Wirtzfeld against substantial German attacks from all sides, as this road represents the main supply route of the 2nd US Armored Division. Your units: Infantry (393rd Infantry Regiment), tank hunters and artillery. Your opponent: German infantry of the 277th Volksgrenadier Division with Nebelwerfers and tanks. Signification: The defense of Krinkelt Rocherath not only covered the retreat of the 2nd US Armored Division, but also substantially hindered the attacking plans of the Germans, as the attackers had not counted on such staunch resistance.

2.2.4 Wiltz - Mission 8 of Date: The 18th December 1944 Weather: Friendly winter weather conditions. Location: Wiltz in Luxembourg. Your orders: Take the bridge over the Wiltz nd cross the river to the north toward Bastogne. Your units: Different platoons, first with heavy tanks of Panzerlehrdivision, then infantry with assault guns and finally paratroopers of the 5th Parachute Division. Your opponent: American infantry with artillery and anti-tank guns. Signification: Wiltz was directly located on the way to Bastogne and in the middle of the advance line of the 5th Armored Army. Therefore Wiltz had to be taken at all costs. 2.2.5 St. Vith - Mission 9 Date: The 19th of December 1944 Weather: Sad day in winter. Location: St. Vith in the Germanspeaking part of Belgium. Your order: Take the city. Your units: Infantry, assault guns and tanks of the 18th and 62nd Volksgrenadierdivisions. Your opponent: US infantry and tanks, the 106th Infantry Division and the 7th Armored Division. Signification: St. Vith is an important road junction in the southeast of the Ardennes. Capturing St. Vith was required for any further German advance, so the fight for St. Vith was very violent. 2.2.6 Operation Greif - Mission 10 Date: The 17th of December 1944, at night Location: Mont Rigi halfway between Eupen and Malmedy in eastern Belgium.

Your orders: Defend the important road junction against attacks by German paratroopers and Wehrmacht troops of the "Brandenburg Regiment" camouflaged as Americans. Your units: Infantry, later armored units. Your opponent: Paratroopers and Germans with American weapons, the feared "Brandenburger Division Troops". Signification: In 1944, the Germans even used sabotage troops behind the enemy lines and fighted in uniforms and with weapons of the enemy, in order to deceive the Allies. 2.2.7 Longvilly - Mission 11 Date: The 19th of December 1944. Weather: Winter weather Location: Longvilly on the way to Bastogne in the east of Belgium. Your orders: Take the villages of Longvilly, Neffe and Mageret one after the other on your way to Bastogne. Your units: Heavy German armored units and tank grenadiers of the Panzerlehrdivision. Your opponent: Infantry, tanks (Team Cherry of the 9th Armored Division) and airborne troops of the 101st Airborne Regiment. Signification: Near Longvilly, the armored unit of "Team Cherry" tried in vain to stop the German advance to Bastogne. 2.2.8 Bastogne - Mission 12 Date: Christmas of 1944 Weather: Winter weather. Location: Bastogne in the east of Belgium.

Your orders: Defend the town againgst the Germans attacks. Your units: US infantry reinforced by tanks (the remains of the 9th and 10th Armored Divisions, the 101st Airborne Regiment) Your opponent: Infantry, tanks, assault guns, artillery, anti-aircraft guns of different units. Signification: Defending Bastogne doggedly, the Americans forced the germans to divert significant ressources to try and take the town. - till the whole of the battle of the bulge focused on the fight for Bastogne. 2.2.9 Baraque de Fraiture - Mission 13 Date: The 22nd of December 1944 Weather: Very cold winter weather. Location: Baraque de Fraiture, a crossroads in the middle of the Ardennes. Your orders: Take the crossroads and advance further north. Your units: Heavy tanks and tank grenadiers of the 2nd Armored Division Your opponent: Infantry, artillery and some tanks. Signification: The fight for Baraque de Fraiture was significant of the battles in the Ardennes in 1944. Desolate snowy spots and crossings became the stages of cruel and bloody fights. 2.2.10 Humain - Mission 14 Date: Boxing day in 1944 Weather: Clear winter weather. Location: Humain in the centre of the Ardennes. Your orders: Advance to Buissonville and to the staging area to the North, cross the bridge, hold Humain and repel the counterattack on Rochefort. Your units: Tanks and tank grenadiers of the 9th Armored Division. 12

Pgina 13

Your opponent: American tank units of the 2nd US Armored Division. Signification: Introducing new troops, the Germans tried to continue the advance; nevertheless, this advance was faltering. This was mainly due to the weather clearing up. In Humain the 9th German Armored Division, having just advanced from Holland, was terribly decimated by air attacks while gathering. The American fighter-bombers had arrived again, the dreary weather typical of the Ardennes was over. 2.2.11 Manhay - Mission 15 Date: 24th December, Christmas eve, at night Location: Manhay in the centre of the Ardennes. Your orders: Repel the German attacks on Manhay, hold the road and cover the retreat of the American units. Your units: Infantry and some tanks of the 7th US Armored Division. Your opponent: Infantry, assault guns, heavy tanks and tank grenadiers of the 2nd SS Armored Division. Signification: Near Manhay, the Americans finally succeeded in stopping the 6th SS Armored Division on its way West and North. The offensive had lost its impetus. 2.2.12 Celles - Mission 16 Date: The 25th of December 1944 Weather: Misty winter weather. Location: Celles, only a few kilometers away from the bridges across the Meuse at Dinant. Your orders: Encircle the German troops and destroy them. Your units: Armored units of the Combat Command A (CCA) and Combat Command B (CCB) of the 2nd US Armored 13

Division. Your opponent: Remains of the 2nd Armored Division. Signification: The 2nd Armored Division (5th Armored Army) had pushed farthermost to the West. At Celles, however, this spearhead was destroyed by the Americans.

2.2.13 La Gleize - Mission 17 Date: The 25th of December, 1944 Weather: Clear, cold winter weather Location: La Gleize in the North of the Ardennes Your orders: Destroy the rests of Peiper's 1st SS Armored Regiment. Your units: Infantry and tanks of the 30th US Infantry Division. Your opponent: Heavy tanks of the 1st SS Armored Regiment. Signification: In La Gleize, the advance of Peiper's 1st SS Armored Regiment came to an end. A few kilometers behind the original positions of the army, the Germans lost all hope of advancing to Antwerpes with the 6th SS Armored Army.

2.3 The Final Battle

The last campaign deals with the final battle between the US Army and the Wehrmacht in the West, i.e. the last German offensive named "Nordwind", Colmar pocket and finally the crossing of the river Rhine by the Americans near Remagen, sealing the end of the Third Reich.

more further south in the Alsace. Here, the 7th US Army was to be destroyed. But to no avail. 2.3.2 The Boiler of Colmar - Mission 19 Period of time: February of 1945 Weather: Clear winter weather Location: Neuf-Brisach, eastern France on the Germany border. Your orders: Take the town and the bridges in a house-to-house fight. Your units: Tanks and infantry of the 6th US Army. Your opponent: Tanks of the 106th Armored Brigade "Feldherrnhalle"and the 708th Volksgrenadier Division. Signification: The boiler of Colmar was the last part of France still held by German troops in 1945. The Americans succeeded in breaking through but they were unable to prevent the German troops from withdrawing across the Rhine river. 2.3.3 The Bridge of Remagen - Mission 20 Period of time: March of 1945 Weather: Friendly spring weather Location: Remagen at the river Rhine, near Bonn Your orders: Take the bridge, build and extend a new bridgehead and defend it against attacks coming from the North and the South. Your units: Reconnaissance and tank units of the 9th US Armored Division. Your opponent: Gathered troops of Wehrmacht and the German Air Force. Signification: With the bridge of Remagen, the Americans seized an intact crossing accrpps the Rhine. The US soldiers quickly seized the opportunity and built a strong bridgehead. Hitler was furious: The door into the Reich was smashed open.

3. NEW WEAPONS AND UNITS

The game contains a wide range of new weapons and units. You'll find the historical and technical aspects explained in detail in the encyclopedia in the game.

3.1 New weapons

Rocket-launchers shoot a rapid salvo of rockets. The rockets tail, which announces an incoming rocket, is clearly visible. Its destructive strength is devastating, particularly on soft targets such as infantry and unarmored vehicles. The rockets accuracy is weak, which increased the impact on the opponents morale. Rocket launcher unit are the American Calliope and the German Nebelwerfer. The Sturmtiger is a particularly heavy rocket launcher. Nebelwerfer Artillery is an effective weapon for bombarding enemy positions, out of reach of enemy fire. The artillery batteries location, however, was easily identified due to the cannons' roaring. Returning enemy artillery fire could knock out fixed artillery positions. Self-propelled artillery pieces, using Howitzers mounted on a tank chassis, allow the artillery guns to be rapidly moved in order to put them out of harms way once they have been fired. The american side has the Priest and The Sherman 105, while the German side has the SD KFZ 165 Hummel.

The mortars can rapidly shoot shells on a short distance, giving infantry light artillery support on the front. In the game, mortars are installed in the American M3 and the German SD KFZ 251. SD KFZ 251 Towards the end of the war, the world's first jet airplanes were developed deployed by the Germans. These jet aircrafts were significantly faster than propeller-driven airplanes of the time and were unsurpassed in aerial battles. Moreover they were usually too fast for anti-air defense guns. The German ME 262 is a hunter and bomber, while the Arado ACRE 234 is a bomber.

ME 262

3.2 New Units

The game offers a wide range of new units present neither in Desert Rats vs. Afrika Korps nor in D-Day. This chapter provides a short overview. The encyclopedia included in the game provides further details and historical background. 3.2.1 German units The Jagdpanther has a fixed turret on the Panther chassis. This meant that it could be equipped with the 8,8cm gun -- the legendary eighty eight -- which was more efficient than the gun on the Panther. This and the weapons handling characteristics and strong armor make the Jagdpanther a dangerous opponent for British Churchills and American Shermans. Caterpillar damage would

Jagdpanther

18

1944 man INT.qxd

7/3/05

07:46

Pgina 19

put the Jagdpanther practically out of play, as the turret was fixed.. The Jagdtiger is a similar construction to the Jagdpanther, based on the Tigers chassis. A stronger weapon was installed, the 12,8cm PAK, thanks to the fixed superstructure. This and the tanks extremely heavy armoring - the Jagdtiger weighed 70 tons - make the Jagdtiger a mobile Jagdtiger bunker. Due to its weight, however, it is very slow, and a broken caterpillar meant certain death. For attacking heavily defended positions, the Sturmtiger is the ideal weapon. This vehicle based on the Tiger I was equipped with a new structure and a 380mm mortar, which fired a heavy rocket -powered shell, developed by the navy for destroying submarines. These shells would flatten entire blocks of houses Sturmtiger The self-propelled Hummel, mentionned previously, was a very mobile artillery weapon. The crew was not very protected, however.

Hummel The Panzer IV H is a variant of the Panzer IV already present in the game. The H version had added side armour on both sides and around the tower. These increased armoring enormously and provided protection against English PIATs and American bazookas. Also the later versions of the Sturmgeschtz III assault guns were equipped with additional lateral armor, providing increased protection.

19

Pgina 20

The Nebelwerfer was the standard rocket launcher of the Wehrmacht. Dozens of these were combined to form batteries and brigades and poured down hellfire on their opponents. The standard vehicle of the German armored infantry was the SD KFZ 251. In the game, this vehicle is present in three versions. The standard version is armed with a machine gun and transports a group of soldiers. The version equipped with a mortar has already has been mentioned above. We have also added the SK KFZ 251/22 to the game, which is equipped with a 88 mm canon. In the game, there are various new airplanes for the Germans. The JU 52 "Tante Ju" was the standard transport aircraft of the Air Force. The propeller-driven aircraft which flies very slowly is an easy victim of AA guns and fighters due to its skin made of corrugated iron.

JU 52

During the war, the Focke Wulf FW 190 replaced the ME 109 as the standard Luftwaffe fighter. In the game, it is used as fast hunter and fighter-bomber, being able to cope with the American P47 Thunderbolt. FW 190 The ME 262 was the world's first operational jet military plane. On special request of Hitler, fighter-bombers were built, though for defending the Reich the hunter variant would have been more helpful. In the game, the ME 262 fulfills both tasks. The Arado 234 was called Blitzbomber. Its jet propulsion made the light bomber really fast - in the game, you'll meet the jet bomber at the bridge of Remagen.

3.2.2 American units The M8 Greyhound was a light armored and fast reconnaissance vehicle. The M8 has no chance against German tanks, and is also vulnerable to machine gun fire. For short, fast reconnaissance raids, however, the M8 is unrivaled. The Sherman 105 is a self-propelled gun. Instead of a tank gun, a 105mm howitzer was built into the standard battle tank of the US army. The vehicle is able to change position fast and has better armor than the German Hummel. The howitzer itself however is relatively weak, as it has the same gun as the Priest . The Sherman tank was also used as carrier of the Calliope rocket system, which obviously better armored and more mobile than the German Nebelwerfer. The rocket launcher, however, was even more inprecise than the Nebelwerfer. M8 Greyhound The M3 Halftrack with mortar is introduced into in the game, giving the American infantry effective front-line artillery support. The P47 Thunderbolt fighter bomber was the bane of the German ground troops. The American P-47 fighter-made each day with good flight weather be a nightmare for the Germans. Changes of position, transports, even large-scale attacks by day became nearly impossible - the Wehrmacht had to operate by night. P47 Thunderbolt The ME 262 could have swept the P47 out of the sky, but it came too late, in too small numbers and often could not take off for lack of fuel.
