192, and Erion defeated Chuck Pitts of Cortland, N.Y., 236-192, in the semifinal round. Bondarchuk and Pitts each earned $725 as semifinal round losers. Scott Newell Wins PBA Ricart Ford Open for First PBA Tour Title
By Jerry Schneider - PBA COLUMBUS, Ohio Despite rolling a gutter ball on his first shot of the opening stepladder match, Scott Newell of Deland, Fla., quickly regained his composure to win three consecutive matches for the PBA Ricart Ford Open presented by Columbia 300 title at Sequoia Pro Bowl. The 28-year-old Newell won his first Tour title by defeating tournament leader and onetime Tour winner Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 247-245, in a title match that went down to the 10th frame. Leaving the tricky 2-8 on the first ball of the 10th frame, Newell was able to make the spare and then strike on the final ball for the victory. I may have looked composed on the outside but I was shaking on the inside, said Newell, who owns three regional Tour titles and a best previous Tour finish of 12th. I just had to take a deep breath and remind myself to stay focused and do what I do best. In the semi-final match, Newell survived another nail biter when he defeated three-time Tour titlist Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla., 238-237. In that match he had to convert a 10pin on the final shot to secure the win. You try to prepare yourself the best you can for pressure situations but you never know how youre going to perform until those situations present themselves, Newell said. A lot of people say you have the ability and you can get it done but its just a great relief when you finally do. In the first frame of the opening stepladder match against Dom Barrett of England, Newell threw the gutter ball after it hit his ankle which he admitted was a sign of his nervousness. He regained his composure enough to then make the spare and went on to defeat Barrett 255-202. It was just a matter of getting too quick with my feet and my timing was off, Newell said. It was probably good that I made that mistake right away because I could then put it behind me and get on with the rest of the match. Barrett was looking for his second PBA Tour title after winning the PBA Scorpion Open which, ironically, was aired on an ESPN taped-delayed telecast earlier in the day.

Nick Hanson, 31, saw his first 300 game, this at Hanover Lanes in the Roseland Mens League. He rolled games of 278-300-180. You could say he was due, as he had rolled a 290 game twice in his life, and a 286 earlier this year. His father, Lance, got Nick interested in the sport early on when they bowled in junior-adult leagues. But then Nick took time off to finish school, get married and start a family. He returned about five years ago to enjoy his once weekly league. He admits to not being nervous until his eleventh shot. I had bowled ten or eleven strikes (in a row) before, so on the last two strikes I felt a numbness in my body. I was just going through the motions. I told myself that I was almost there and to not mess it up. He chose the bowling congress ring as his reward. Having posted a 798 series recently, he would love to see that 800 soon. Meanwhile, he texted his father after his perfect game, as he taught me everything I know and his father texted back Really? My son has bowled bumpers. I look forward to bowling in adult junior leagues with him. Dj vu all over again!
Idle bowling thoughts. One of the greatest entertainment shows of all time, hailed around theworld featured the three tenors, opera legends Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. In a TV interview Domingo explained that you need a certain kind of breathing to reach the high notes, and when Pavorotti was singing Domingo and Carreras would sort of breathe with him to help him along. Then he added that it was like when you are bowling, and you are behind the bowler, and you move from side to side to help the bowler steer the ball. What happens when one bowler sticks on a lane and complains, and another bowler says he slides too much on the same lane and complains? A United Nations like debate ensues and the centers, league and bowling officials wished they had stayed home that night. Your bowling troubles aren't as bad as they seem. They couldn't be. Like it or not, we learn by looking, copying and repeating, and we naturally imitate winners, not losers. Almost every successful person you meet uses something from role models with track records of success of some kind. That's true of bowling too. Top pros, male and female, and top amateurs must realize that they are heroes to others, young and old, whether the stars like it or not. Needling and baiting can be fun, interesting and even productive at times. That's fine, as long as you can take it as well as you give it.
In the rush for entries some senior tournaments are lowering the minimum age to 45 or lower from the usual 50. There are super senior divisions for bowlers 60 and over and super super divisions for 70 and up. Is bowling going to get like boxing? Boxing once had eight divisions---period. Now there are junior and super groupings added to the original, making 24. And there are at least three sanctioning groups and that's why there are so many boxing champions, 72 and counting, as other newly created weight divisions and boxing associations pop up. In bowling, in most cases, youngsters and oldsters, what counts is average, not age. Whenever a so-called unknown wins a bowling event just remember that many a nobody who isn't known by anybody becomes a somebody and is known by everybody, and everybody tells him they knew him when he was a nobody and they knew he would be a somebody someday. Huh? Pure fiction is the story of a head to head bowling match---as told by the participants two weeks later. In the more than 40 years pro bowling has been on TV, the event that caused the most comment and excitement and got the most exposure was not a specific thrilling match or perfect game or a big money purse---it was Mark Roth's conversion of the 7-10 split. All bowlers have their bad outings. It has been said that those bad times will be matched by an equal number of good times. Most bowlers I know have a lot of good days coming. In the meantime have a good bowling day---or at least a good day---every day.
