ASSIGNMENT Course: Multimedia coding, representation and communications

Instruction: This assignment is to help students: better comprehend the subject principles; acquire practical skills related to the field of video coding and communication. It is desired that every student fulfill the questions independently though exchanging ideas and sharing experiences with others are acceptable. Each student shall be given a unique video sequence as the input for his/her own assignment. The class monitor board is requested, after discussion with class members, to assign video sequences to individuals so that each input video sequence is taken by only one student at most. Submission: All individual and group reports (only .doc files) must be sent to the following email no later than March 18, 2012. File size is smaller than 2MB. Your file name = your full name(s) + your class (e.g. OU-DTVT) + video sequence title + .doc Subject line in your email or on CD face = ASGN: + your full name + your class (e.g. KH01) + video sequence title.

Important notes:
The above rules of naming your .doc file and writing the subject line of your email must be fully respected; otherwise your report shall be filtered out and hence fail to reach the lecturer. Reports submitted to email addresses other than the above given address shall not be reviewed nor scored. You will disqualify the course if failing to submit your report by the deadline.

Questions Download yuv video sequence(s) listed in http://trace.eas.asu.edu/yuv/index.html , either CIF or QCIF, from this web or any other source. It is also acceptable that you yourself capture raw video from digital camera. 1. Encode the video sequence(s) according to MPEG4 or H264 (preferred), use a media player to playback the encoded sequence, capture at least 3 different pictures and embed them in the report .doc file. 2. Decode the encoded sequence(s) and calculate PSNR of all frames compared to the original one(s). Plot the statistics using MS Excel, gnuplot or any other tool. 3. Transmit the encoded sequence(s) over a network composed of at least one lossy wireless link (e.g. 802.11) and using a tracing tool (e.g. tcpdump) to collect packet traces at receiver and sender. Regenerate the received video and calculate and plot its PSNR compared to the transmitted video sequence(s). Give comments on how much the received video degrades.
