Wireless Networking

Components of Wireless Networking : 1. Medium 2. Access Pint a. Software Access Point b. Hardware Access Pint 3. Extension Point 4. Antenna a. Omni Directional b. Directional 5. Wireless Router 6. Power Line Bridges 7. Wireless Work Station and Server 8. Wireless Adaptor 9. Software ( Driver)

Medium : It is a source through which Radio Frequency waves will travel from source to destination. Example : Space , Air

Access Point : It is a device it is used to communicate between two wireless pcs. and also connects wired and wireless network. Two types of access pints are there : a. Software Access Point b. Hardware Access Point Software Access Point :- A computer installed with wireless NIC card is called as software access point.

Hardware Access Point :- It is a separate device which is used to connect wired and wireless network is called hardware access point.

Extension Point : It is a device which is used to extend the wireless network.

Wireless Bridge : Wireless bridge is used to connects two different or same wireless LAN segments.

Powerline Bridge: These devices are used inside the metal shielding room, because it has higher gain and radio frequency waves will penetrates through metal shielding room.

Antennas : Antennas are used to increase the range of wireless network signals/network. There are two types of antennas. Omni Directional Antennas :- This antennas will send the single direction it is used inside the office or room. Directional Antennas :- This antennas will send the signal all direction and it is used for larger distance. Adapters : It is a wireless network card which enables the device to become wireless device by installing the drivers. NETWORK ESSENTIALS

Wireless Server : It is wireless device, which is used to provide the service to the wireless clients.

Wireless Station : It is a wireless work station, which is used to take the services of wireless servers.

Software : The driver which is used to install the wireless NIC card in an operating system is called software .

Types of Wireless Network : 1. Peer to Peer (ADHOC) 2. Access point or infrastructure mode

Peer to Peer : - in peer to peer adhoc method multiple computers are connected with wireless network card. It cannot used wired LAN but can access shared files and printers in the network. It works similar to mesh topology. Access Point or Infrastructure Mode :- Access Point is used to connect wired and wireless network. It acts as a hub and used star topology. In this mode two types of services are used : a. Basic Service Set BSS :- in this service set only one access point is used. b. Extended Service Set ESS :- In this service set more than one access point is used. Difference Between Wired and Wireless Networks: Wired Network Uses Cables to connect Low Noise Signals High performance Provides 1000Mbps speed through fast Ethernet More reliable More secure Firewall are used for securing IEEE standard is 802.3 Uses full duplex communication Less interference Data travel through cables Difficult to install CSMA CD Wired network can be extended with the help of hub or switch Wireless Network Does not used cables, connects through adhoc and infrastructure mode High Noise Signals Low performance Maximum bandwidth 54Mbps through 802.11a and 802.11g standards Less reliable Less secure WEP/WPA protocols are used for security IEEE Standard is 802.11 Uses Half duplex communication More interference Data travels through air and space Easy to install CSMA CA Wireless LAN can be extended with the help of Access point and extension point
