Techniques used by internship students ummer Program Components

Research Internship. Through a 90-contact-hour internship, students learn the skills of performing research and understanding the context for their work from experts. Each intern will work on an individual project with a Smithsonian scientist-mentor at either the National Museum of Natural History, the National Zoological Park or Smithsonian Gardens. Communication and Research Presentation Workshops. Interns engage in interactive workshops covering various skills, including oral and written communication and research presentation. Participants are provided with guidelines and opportunities to communicate and make presentations as real-world professionals. Communication of Science to Public Audiences. Interns work with the Museums Education and Outreach staff and volunteers to learn how science is communicated to the public. Interns engage in hands-on experiences in NMNHs exhibits, including Mammals, Human Origins, Gems & Minerals, and Paleobiology, as well as learning spaces such as the Insect Zoo & Butterfly Pavilion, Forensic Anthropology Lab, and Discovery Room. Cross-Cultural Communication Experience. Interns will receive training in crosscultural communication and then practice what they have learned with rotations in the exhibit halls as volunteers working with museum visitors. Behind-the-Scenes Tours, Field Trips, and Guest Speakers. As part of the YES! program, interns experience the vast scope of the Smithsonian Institution during field trips to some of the Institutions museums and research centers in the area. In addition,guest speakers from our science community talk with our students about their work in their respective fields. Community Day Presentation: During the last week of the summer program, the interns use their newly acquired skills in communicating science to present the results of the projects they worked on with their scientistmentors. This science fair-style event allows students to bring family, friends, and members of their communities to view their projects and learn more about their summer experience. Institutional Excellence and Integrity. For internships away from campus, the organization offering the internship program should have an appropriate management structure, staff, and policies to support the provision of a sound and high quality internship program that includes concurrent curricula, support services, and housing.

Academic Excellence and Rigor. The internship incorporates a defined project(s) resulting in outcomes and products of benefit to the organization and involving college-level learning on the student's part. Individual Attention and Involvement. The internship program should provide individualized attention and support for the students and should provide for active involvement of students in their education. Goals of internship

Although interns are typically college or university students, they can also be high school students or post-graduate adults. Rarely, they can even be middle school or in some cases elementary students. Generally, the internship works as an exchange of services for experience between the student and his or her employer. Students exchange their cheap or free labor to gain experience in a particular field. They can also use an internship to determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts, or gain school credit. Some interns also find permanent, paid employment with the companies in which they interned. Thus, employers also benefit as experienced interns need little or no training when they begin full-time regular

Advanced Research Techniques:

Advanced Research Techniques: The student gains practical experience in a variety of advanced research methods by working 10 hours per week with a faculty member engaged in a scholarly project with a complex research element. Students in a particular term might work with specialized databases and indices, conduct archival research, gain grounding in paleographic analysis, do onsite archeological work, or otherwise practice advanced research skills; in any case, the internship involves more than finding materials

in standard library catalogues. The student keeps a log of the skills he or she develops and writes a reflective essay on the intricate relation of information and analysis. Readings might range from Edward Tufte to John Creswell, as well as more specialized material in the particular field of research undertaken. Only faculty members who have received a Liberal Studies Faculty Research Challenge Award (or the equivalent) for the year in question are eligible to direct Advanced Research Techniques internships
