ome to Spain and immerse yourself in three of the countrys distinct, personality-packed cities. In Barcelona, feel the exuberant spirit of Catalua. The cityscape blends modern skyscrapers, Gothic churches and Gauds fanciful architecture. San Sebastin is part of the Basque Country, where residents speak the distinctive Basque language and are fiercely proud of their unique culture. The cuisine here is among the best in the world. Compared to Barcelona and San Sebastin, Madrid is stately, the modern embodiment of regal old Castile. These cities, despite their differences, possess at least one common Spanish trait: an irresistible passion for life.

The Architecture of Northern Spain

Head to northern Spain to see some of the countrys most glorious architecture. Barcelona has its share of historic monuments in the Barri Gtic, its Gothic Quarter, but its architectural stars are from the modernisme movement. Antoni Gaud (1852-1926), the most famous architect of this movement, created unforgettable works, including the opulent, but unfinished, La Sagrada Familia and the fanciful Parc Gell and Casa Batll. Another architect who has made his mark in northern Spain is Canadian-born American Frank Gehry (b. 1929), whose contemporary buildings seem like an homage to his modernism forebears. The faade of his Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao bears sweeping ribbons of titanium, a common Gehry feature.

The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, El Greco

Spains diversity of landscapes and culture is reflected in its cuisine, but most people agree that Basque Country San Sebastin, in particular is the countrys culinary capital. Here, the freshest of seafood is the star on the traditional table as well as in restaurants serving progressive haute cuisine and all ingredients, from the land or sea, are treated with painstaking care and respect. It is said that the best tapas are found in Basque Country, where they are called pintxos. No one will argue that Barcelona is another gastronomes delight. Like San Sebastin, it is on the sea, so fresh fish and seafood are excellent. For a special, authentic treat in Barcelona, head to a llesqueria, where pa amb tomquet, bread and tomato, is a fine accompaniment to cured ham, sausage and cheeses. Though it sounds simple, this snack grilled bread rubbed with garlic and a ripe, juicy tomato before being topped off with a drizzle of Spanish olive oil is a local favorite. Pour a glass of cava, the sparkling wine produced in the Peneds region of Catalua, to accompany these tasty morsels. Of course, tapas can be found in Madrid, but you may wish to try traditional, hearty Castilian fare, such as roasts and stews.
