SECTION A
THE ENGINE
The engine is a 12 cylinder Vee type. The included angle between
cylinder banks is 80
0
The cylinders are numbered from 1 to 12, starting
with No.1 being the front cylinder of the left bank. The cylinders are
numbered alternately so that the cylinders in the left bank are numbered
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. The cylinders in the right bank are numbered 2, 4,
6,8, 10, and 12. The firing order is 1 - 4 - 9 - 8 - 5 - 2 - 11 - 10 - 3 - 6 -
7 - 12. Valve lifters are the hydraulic oil cushion type and maintain zero
tappet clearance without adjustment.
The engine is actually much more simple than appears upon casual
observation. It consists of two six cylinder banks, each with its own car-
buretor and governor equipment and which are interconnected. The con-
necting rods operate on one common crankshaft; the rod on one bank being
mounted on the crankshaft alongside that of the corresponding cylinder on
the opposite bank. The blocks are offset slightly endwise of the engine to
permit this. The cylinder blocks are interchangeable, one bank to the other.
The cylinder heads are identical excepting that expanding plugs are in-
serted in opposite ends in place of the water outlet connections. Each of
two ignition distributors fires all twelve cylinders . The only reason for
two distributors is to fire the two spark plugs in each cylinder thereby
providing a double ignition system.
It is not recommended that both ignition switches
time as this sometimes results in engine roughness.
be alternated in use to make sure that both systems
erly at all times.
be .. on" at the same
They should, however,
are functioning prop-
The connecting rod and main bearings are of the preClslOn interchange-
able type and may be renewed by simply slipping new bearings into the
place of the old. Should the crankshaft be scored or worn excessively and
out of round it will be necessary to either regrind the crankshaft and in-
stall under-size bearings or install a new crankshaft. If the engine is
properly lubricated and not badly abused such major repairs should not be
necessary for many years.
IGNITION
The ignition system is the 12 volt dual type having two 12 cylinder
distributors, each with separate coils, and supplied from either of two
pairs of 6-volt batteries. Each pair of batteries is wired in series to
provide a 12 volt electrical system. Either distributor may be used sep-
arately or both at the same time and, by means of a double throw switch
on the instrument panel, may be supplied from either pair of batteries.
A-I
The distributors use double coils and double breaker points. Each
coil and each pair 'Of breaker points supply one bank of cylinders.
The distributor stationary breaker points control the firing in the left
bank of cylinders or those numbered 1. 3, 5. 7. 9. and 11. The breaker
points on the adjustable breaker' plate (see Fig. 1) control the right bank
or those numbered 2. 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. The points for the left bank are
timed by loosening the distributor hold down clamps and rotating the dis-
tributor body. The points for the right bank are timed by the eccentric
adjusting screw on the adjustable breaker plate.

1. Remove the distributor head and rotor aI).d clean. Set breaker points
to .018.
2 . Remove flywheel inspection cover so that markings on flywheel may
be seen.
.--
3. Crank the engine slowly with No. 1 (# lL) piston approaching top center
on the compression stroke. This is indicated by the flywheel marking
IGN/No.l and the mark must stop directly under the center of fly-
wheel inspection opening. Should the flywheel be turned past the
pointer back the flywheel up at least 4 inches and then crank forward
again to position. Care in setting the flywheel insures accuracy of
the timing.
A - 2
4. Loosen the distributor flange clamp screws and rotate the distributor
housing until the breaker points for No.1 (# lL) are opened sufficiently
to give a slight drag on a .010 feeler gauge . Tighten the flange clamp
screws and recheck the point opening.
Check the rotor position for the ' wire in distributor for No.1 cylinder.
Time the breaker for the second distributor in the same manner.
5. Rotate the flywheel until the mark IGN/No.4 appears in the center of
the flywheel inspection opening. Time the breaker for No.4 (# 2R) .
This is done by moving the breaker plate adjusting screw until the
breaker points give a slight drag on .010 feele r gauge. Lock the plate
locking screw. Now time the adjustable breaker in the second distri-
butor.
6. Recheck for correctness of setting by t.urning the compression stroke
on No.1 and No.4.
IF A TIMING LIGHT IS TO BE USED, DO NOT TIME ON THE REG-
ULAR MARKINGS. Make a punch mark 13/16 ahead of the regular
markings at both IGN/No 1 and at IGN/No. 4 and time to these punch
marks with the engine idling at about 475 rpm. The distributors may
be checked on a distributor checking machine to show a dwell angle of
37 degrees; an advance of 2
0
at 4.00 distributor rpm and 7
0
advance at
1400 distributor rpm. The firing interval is- 20
0
and 40
0

Spark plug gap should be .025.
DISTRIBUTOR MAINTENANCE
The distributors are equipped with a built-in oil reservoir. This should .
be refilled yearly by removing the plug on the distributor shank and filling
with grade 20 W oil. When replacing plug, apply a small amount of sealer
te the threads to prevent oil seepage.
A trace of Delco-Remy cam and ball bearing lubricant or vaseline
should be placed on the breaker cam every 5000 engine miles. Also, at the
same time, put 1 or 2 drops of light engine oil on the breaker pivot and 3
or 4 drops on the felt wick under the rotor. AVOID EXCESSIVE LUBRI-
CATION.
At periodic intervals, depending on service, the distributors and coils
should be inspected and serviced by an authorized electrical service station.
This should insure that the automatic advances, contact points, condenser
action, etc. are functioning properly.
The proper breaker point opening is .018 to .024 inch.
A - 3
GENERATOR (D. C. TYPE)
,
(Note: - If alternator equipment has been specified for the appa-ratus,
the instruction of the alternator manufacturer should be followed).
The generator is a shunt wound, two pole, ventilated type unit, having
external control, and a capacity of 30 amperes at 13 volts. The armature
is mounted on ball bearings at each end. Hinge cap oilers are provided
and 8 to 10 drops of engine oil should be applied to each at vehical lu-
brication periods. AVOID EXCESSIVE LUBRICATION.
The generator should be checked periodically by an authorized electrical
service station. If it should fail to function properly it may be due to a
dirty commutator which may be cleaned with a strip of No. 00 sandpaper .
Hold the sandpaper against the commutator with a wood stick while the
generator is running, moving it back and forth across the commutator. A
few seconds is all that is required. Never use emery cloth. All dust
should be blown from the generator .
If brushes are worn to half their original length they should be replaced,
but they must be properly seated by qualified personnel.
The proper brush spring tension is important. It should be about 25
ounces, measured with a spring gauge.
REGULATOR
The regulator and generator are closely related. The proper functioning
of the generator depends largely on that of the regulator. The regUlator
(mounted on the front of the dash) contains three units (a) the cutout relay
(b) the voltage regulator and (c) the current regulator .
The cutout relay closes the circuit between the generator and the
battery when the generator is charging and opens the circuit when the
generator is running slowly or stops. This prevents the battery discharging
back through the generator when the latter is idle.
The voltage regulator, by a series of windings and a vibrator arm,
regulates the voltage output of the generator. Similarly, by proper windings
and a vibrator arm, the current regulator , in conjunction with the voltage
regulator, controls the current output of the generator to supply the
maximum of current when the battery needs charging or when there is a
heavy electrical load, but reducing the current output when necessary to
prevent over-charging of the battery.
The regulator should be checked at periodic intervals and adjusted, if
necessary, by a qualified automotive electrical man or service station.
A-4
If the generator shows a high charging rate with a fully charged battery
it is an indication that the regulator is not functioning properly. The
difficulty should be remedied promptly. otherwise damage to battery and
other electrical units may result.
If the generator shows a low charging rate with a low battery it may
be caused by (a) loose connections or frayed or damaged wires. (b) de-
fective battery. (c) low regulator setting. (d) oxidized regulator contact
points or (e) defects within the generator. If(a) or (b) conditions do not
exist, then the regulator should be checked and serviced by a qualified
automotive electrician.
STARTING MOTOR
The starting motor is equipped with oilless bearings which require no
lubrication excepting when the motor is disassembled for repair or service.
The motor is equipped with a Bendix drive pinion which engages the fly-
wheel ring gear automatically when the current is applied.
The starting motor should be checked periodically by a qualified auto-
motive electrician or service station. and brushes. commutator, and Bendix
drive serviced as required.
Routine maintenance should consist of checking connections dn motor
and battery for cleanliness and tightness. battery lead cables for condition
of terminal attachments. etc.
If the starter fails to function from either starter button try turning
on the lights. If they are bright but go out or dim suddenly when the
starter is applied. it indicates a loose or corroded battery connection.
Remove cable clamps from terminals, clean terminals and clamps care-
fully, replace and tighten securely. If starter still fails to function the
trouble is probably due to a run down battery, otherwise the trouble is
likely to be in the starting motor itself, or possibly in the solenoid switch.
The latter may be checked by momentarily placing a heavy jumper lead
across the solenoid main terminals to see if the starting motor will operate;
if so the trouble is in the solenoid circuit.
CAUTION: Do not use the starting motor continuously more than 30
seconds, to avoid overheating.
STORAGE BATTERIES
The batteries should be tested, each cell individually, at frequent and
regular intervals, with a hydrometer. Fully charged cells should read
1.280 or more. If any cells are below 1.250 the batteries should be put
on" charge".
Due to the extremely heavy electrical load on most fire apparatus it IS
A - 5
usually not possible for the generator to keep the batteries fully charged
at all times. All of our apparatus are equipped with a polarity type
battery charging connection for house charging.
On apparatus having only one charging plug, either pair of batteries
may be house charged by throwing the double throw switch on the instru-
ment panel to the proper position to charge the corresponding battery.
Also, the electrical load of the apparatus may be shifted from one
pair of batteries to the other by the same double- throw switch.
The starter buttons on the instrument panel are each connected, through
a solenoid switch, to one of the two batteries. If the engine does not turn
over when pushing one of the buttons, that battery may be discharged and
the other battery will be connected by pushing the other button.
Keep cells filled with distilled water. Never let electrolite fall below
top of plate s.
Keep the batteries clean and dry and inspect wires and terminals
frequently. Keep the terminals tight and covered with vaseline to help
prevent corrosion.
CAMSHAFT TIMING
Should it be necessary to remove the timing chain the camshaft can
easily be retimed. Both chain sprockets have a letter 0 stamped on one
tooth of each gear. To time the camshaft turn the crankshaft until the
letter 0 on the crankshaft gear tooth is at the top. Turn the camshaft
until the camshaft gear tooth marked 0 is on the bottom. This makes
both marked teeth come on a straight line through both the crankshaft and
camshaft centers. Install the timing chain and the camshaft is properly
timed.
VALVE MECHANISM
The valve mechanism on this engine is of conventional automotive design
excepting that, instead of adjustment being provided for valve lifters, hy-
draulic ZERO Lash lifters are installed. These lifters are similar to the
manually adjustable type except for having a straight, accurately machined,
hole instead of a threaded hole for an adjusting screw. Into this hole is
inserted a hydraulic unit which automatically eliminates all lost motion
between the cam and the valve stem. It eliminates tappet adjustment and
automatically compensates for varying valve stem temperatures.
In operation, oil under pressure from the lubricating system of the
engine is supplied to the chamber back of the lifter bracket E (see Fig. 2),
and flows under pressure through hole (H) into the oil supply chamber (J )
in the lifter (A).
A - 6
FIG.2
ILLUSTRATION SHOWING OPERATION Of
ZERO-LASH HYDRAULIC LIfTER
When the lifter rests on the base circle of
the caITl and the valve is seated, a light spring
(K) pushes the tappet against the valve steITl,
giving Zero Lash. As the plunger (C) is pushed
upward by this spring (a very short distance only)
the ball check (D) opens and oil fills the chaITlber
( L). The entire interior of the lifter is now
filled with oil under pressure and, when the caITl
turns to a position to lift the valve the valve is
actually lifted on a coluITln of oil.
While the valve is off of its seat, being held
there by the coluITln of oil, a pre-deterITlined slight
leakage of oil occurs froITl chaITlber (L) between
the plunger and cylinder b'Ore. This insures that
the valve will seat properly when released by the
. caITl, and also allows for the valve steITl increasing
in length by expansion froITl heat.
The only ITlaintenance required of the valve ITlech-
anisITl is to use only a good grade of clean engine
oil (see LUBRICATION) , and avoid starting and
then shutting down :a cold engine (see HOUSE
ST ARTING ). Dirty, sludgy oil and corrosion are about the only things that
can prevent the valve ITlechanisITl froITl functioning properly.
Valves should be ground in, of course, when required, but this should
not be necessary excepting at infrequent intervals. If, after long service,
the valves are .. RESEATED" the distance between the tip of the valve steITl,
with valve firITlly in seat, and the base circle of the caITl should be care-
fully checked. This distance should be froITl .020 to .040 inch ITlore than
the length of the valve lifter asseITlbly with the hydraulic unit bottoITled,
or pushed in against spring (K) as far as it will go. If this distance be-
COITles too sITlall, due to valves being reseated too deeply, there wi1l not be
enough space reITlaining for the lifter and the valve will be held open. This
will cause engine ITlissing and valve burning. The proper clearance can be
obtained by grinding a sITlall aITlount off of the valve steITl tip. Be sure it
is ground squarely. If too ITluch is ground off the valve steITl the valve
tappets will be noisy.
CARBURETORS.
Before adjusting the carburetors, see that the following are in good
condition:
1. Be sure there are no ail' leaks in the inlet systeITl.
2. Check the spark plug gaps for .025 gap.
3. Check the ignition tiITling and breaker points.
4. Have the engine properly warITled up.
5. Check the carburetor float level.
A - 7
To adjust the idle mixture, remove the high tension wire from one of
the coils and adjust the idle of the carburetor on the bank of cylinders
that is firing, to get the smoothest idle. The high tension terminal at the
center of the distributor cap feeds the right hand cylinder bank and the
terminal to the side feeds the left hand cylinders. Set the idling speed at
350 rpm. (Note: - On engines ~ q u i p p e d with alternators the idling speed
should be such as to provide a suitable charging rate). If the engine
speed is too fast or too slow check the idle adjustment again to see that
correct speed has been obtained on throttle idle screw.
When both banks have been adjusted so that the idle adjustment is
correct and their speed is the same, connect the high tension wires and
run on all IZ - cylinders.
The carburetor throttles must be synchronized to open at exactly the
same time. The throttles of the two carburetors are connected by a
cross-shaft which carries the synchronizing adjustment. To synchronize
the throttle openings, pull the throttle rod open slightly and note if both
carburetor throttles leave the idle stop at the same time. If they do not
open together, turn the adjusting screw, which is located on the upper
right hand side of the cross-shaft, in whichever direction is necessary to
make the throttles open exactly alike. If one throttle opens ahead of the
other, the second throttle can be felt on the rod, as it starts to open, due
to the increased tension of the second throttle when it opens.
The carburetors may be synchronized by connecting vacuum gauges to
each intake manifold and adjusting until the vacuum reading is the same for
both.
GOVERNORS
The Hoof, velocity type, governors are installed for your protection
as well as ours, since excessive engine speed greatly shortens the life of
the engine and may cause sudden failure of engine parts. The governors
prevent excessive engine speed, not only in high gear but in the lower gears
as well where engine racing is most prevalent. They do not affect the
normal, reasonable performance or speed.
Do not attempt to over -ride or interfere with the functioning of the
governors.
The governors are adjusted at our factory and the adjustment is sealed. Our
warranty of the engine will be voided if the seals are broken or tampered with,
or if the governors are removed.
Do not attempt to make repairs on governors.
properly they should be replaced. We will make
basis, charging only for the necessary repairs.

CLUTCH
The proper care of the clutch is one of the most important items of
maintenance because this unit provides the connecting link between the
powerplant and the driving mechanism of the pump or chassis. Each time
the clutch is engaged it must, in itself, absorb some of the engine power
while the speed of the engine and that of the pump . or of the chassis are
being equalized.
PRESSURE SPRING
SIMPLE TYPE OF
ADJUSTI NG GAUGE
DIMENSION "AN
FIG. I
CROSS SECTION OF CLUTCH
The clutch (see Fig.l) in
this machine (Lipe RoHway
Model No. 140-1-308) is of
the single, dry disc type. The
disc is attached by means of
splines to the transmission
drive shaft, and is faced on
both sides with friction ma-
terial resembling brake linin g.
As the clutch is being engage d ,
the disc is squeezed between
the fly wheel and the clutch
pressure pla te by mea ns of a
heavy helical spring and thereby
conn ects the engine to the rea r
wheels (or the pump). If the
clutch is allowed to slip ex-
cessively the facing material
gets hot and will eventually
dis-int egrate . The fly wheel
and the pressure plate also
get hot and either or both
may be dc .. maged and require
replacement.
It is, therefore, important
that the driver does not' 'ride
the clutch", and also that the
clutch be properly adjusted.
If these simple precautions
are taken the clutch will give
long and satisfactory service
frequent adjustments .
WHEN TO MAKE CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
Never wait for the clutch to start slipping before adjusting it, as it is
then too late because the facings, at least, are ruined.
B 1
As the facing wears the clutch sleeve (Fig. I) moves toward the re-
lease bearing thus reducing the clearance between the bearing and the
sleeve (clutch in engaged position). This reduction of clearance will
result in a reduction of the pedal "lash", which is defined as the first
easy movement, with the fingers, of the clutch pedal. When the lash of
the clutch pedal is reduced to approximately I / 2" the clutch should be
adjusted immediately. Do not adjust pedal linkage to restore the original
pedal "lash" but, instead, pull shims as directed in the following
cedure.
TO ADJUST THE CLUTCH proceed as follows:
( I) Block the clutch in released or "out" position by means of a
wooden"prop" between the clutch pedal and the seat frame.
( 2) Back off all the adjusting strap nuts five full turns each. ( There
are four adjusting strap nuts on Models 400 and 500 and six on Model 900
apparatus). .' ,-
( 3) Remove the clutch block-out in "l .. , This will
permit the adjusting plate to f ! om _ the adjusting shims, and
make them easy t o remove. --<-
(4) Remove shims (see Fig. 2) to provide proper adjustment . Measure
accurately by means of straight e'd ge and scale or a simple gauge, the

this distance by approxi m a tel y

bring dista nce A to t hat given
above but, before removing the
la st shim that calculation would
indicate, it is best to check the
adjustments as described in "c".
Remove the shim,S by using sharp posed pliers or inserting cotter pin
puller in small hole. Be sure no portion of the shim is torn off and re-
mains under flange of adjusting plate. Be sure that the same number of
shims are removed from under each strap'. CAUTION: Make sure that
an equal number of shims remains under each strap before proceedin&
with step 5.
(5) Release the clutch by blocking clutch pedal down in same
as described in "1". Then tighten all adjusting strap nuts.
the clutch is important to avoid bending of the adjusting straps when "
tightening the nuts.
(6), Check the distance "A" which should now measure 1 5/ 16" (plus
1/16 or minus 0) and, if this distance is still too great, repeat the ad-
j.usting process by removing another shim all around.
B 2

(7) When distance . "A" is correct. remove the c l ~ t c h pedal blo{:king
to permit the clutch to engage and free the clutch release bearing. -Now
check the distance from the release bearing to the clutch sleeve for
"BEARING CLEARANCE" (see Fig. 1) which should be not LESS than
1/8" and not MORE than 5/32". It may be necessary to adjust the
pedal linkage to obtain the proper clearance, because of wear or im-
proper initial adjustment; otherwise, do not adjust pedal linkage. When
clutch and linkage are properly adjusted the CLUTCH PEDAL LASH
should be 1" to 1 1/4".
Note: When clutch adjustments have been made to the extent that
all adjusting shims have been removed, a new driven disk assembly
should be installed and the original number of shims replaced (six under
each strap of 400 and 500 Models, 7 on 900 Models).
Routine maintenance of clutch requires only lubrication of release
bearing. and of pedal shaft and linkage monthly. See lubrication chart.
Do not over-lubricate the release bearing.
In driving, engage the clutch slowly to avoid a jerky start. Learn
to "double-clutch" to make a quiet shift, especially when shifting to a
lower gear on an up grade .

ROAD TRANSMISSION
The road transmission has five speeds forward and one reverse. The
fourth speed provides direct drive through the transmission and the fifth
speed provides for .. Over-drive". All gears, excepting low and reverse,
are of the helical type and are shifted by means of internal-external gear
clutches rather than by shifting the gears in and out of mesh.
The main shaft is mounted on ball bearings. The pocket bearing and
the front countershaft bearing are straight roller type. The rear end of
the countershaft is supported on a pair of opposed taper roller bearings.
The excellent construction of this transmission should make any service
work unnecessary for many years, providing it is properly lubricated and
handled in a reasonable manner. The sectional view shown below illustrates
the general construction.
ROAD TRANSMISSION
SHIFTING GEARS
The first speed is extra low and
need not be used unless starting on
a rather steep grade, or when care-
fully placing the apparatus; otherwise
the machine may be started in second
gear. The gear shifting positions are
shown on a plate on the dash.
A beginner should watch the tach-
ometer when going through the gears
until he becomes familiar with the
process. The engine speed, as in-
dicated on the tachometer should
rarely exceed 2200 R.P .M. This
will provide about 12 miles per hour
in second, 23 miles per hour in third,
42 miles per hour in fourth(direct),
and 54 miles per hour in fifth (over-'
drive)..... For average city driving
use fourth speed, as this will provide g.ood acceleration and all the speed
that can usually be safely used. For runs when speeds in excess of 40
miles per hour are desired, use over-drive whenever possible. Maximum
speed is 60 to 65 miles per hour in over -drive.
When shifting down, as on a steep grade, learn the double -clutching
technique which will permit shifting without clashing. A little careful
practice will enable the driver to shift gears easily, rapidly, and without
clashing under all conditions.

FIRE PUlv1P
The Seagrave fire pump is the parallel-series type. It consists of
two bronze impellers keyed to a stainless steel shaft so arranged that
they may operate in parallel as two separate pumps giving large volumes
at . low pressures or operate as one pump of two stages for high pressure.
The pump casing consists of a central body and two heads, one of
which includes the transmission case for the driving gears.
The pump shaft is equipped with monel metal sleeves where it .extends
through the packing boxes at each end of the pump. This metal was
chosen due to its great resistance to corrosion at the packing rings.
The pump heads are fitted with renewable sealing rings that make it
possible to restore a badly worn pump to the same efficiency as a new
pump.
The pump is shown in vertical section which gives the arrangement
of the transmission driving gears and priming pump. (see Fig. I)

any time, without slowing down the pump or closing any hose lines,
merely by moving the control knob on the instrument panel.

PUMP TRANSMISSION AND CONTROL
The pump transmission is built into the front end of the pump (see
Fig. l). When the pump transmission control lever is in neutral or
"out" position, the pump driving gear floats on the pump driving shaft
by means of two roller bearings. If the shifting r:lutch is moved forward
it engage s in an internal gear on the back of the pump driving gear and
thereby connects the engine to the pump. If the clutch is moved to the
rein it engages an internal gear on the pump tail shaft and thereby con-
nects the engine to the axle propeller shaft and the rear wheels.

SHOWING PUMP CONTROLS
The pump shifting lever is con-
nected) by an adjustable link, to the
pump control lever (Fig. 3). The up-
per end of the pump control lever is
in the form of a spring loaded valve
with a knob so arranged that when it
is pulled out it operates the valve,
and when moved forward or backward
it operates the pump shifting lever.
A floating pick-up lever is mounted
on the clutch control shaft and a
vacuum cylinder is attached to the
frame with a rod connected to the
clutch pic k up lever. The vacuum
cylinder is of the "atmospheric sus-
pended" type and, when the knob on
the control lever is pulled out, the
valve on the control lever opens to
admit vacuum to the cylinder through
flexible hose, causing the piston in
same to move back and, through the
pick-up lever and clutch control shaft,dis-
engages the clutch. When the knob is re-
leased the valve closes the vacuum port
and opens a port to allow air ( atmos-
pheric pressure) to re-enter the
cylinder and the piston moves forward,
engaging the clutch.
The entire mechanism, including the
vacuum cylinder, is simple and should
cause no trouble. If, however, the vacuum cylinder should, for any reason,
fail to release the clutch, the pump shifting may be readily accomplished
from the driver's seat by using the clutch pedal and then shifting the pump
control lever.
The vacuum pump is controlled, in exactly the same manner, by a
vacuum cylinder. The "PRIME" knob is attached to a valve similar to the
one on the pump control lever. The vacuum cylinder operates the vacuum
pump shifting lever also, by means of a toggle arrangement, the vacuum
valve which opens and clos'es the tube connection between the vacuum pump
and the main pump.
C 3
VACUUM PUMP
The vacuum pump is of the rotary eccentric vane type and is illus-
trated in Fig. 4 It consists of a rotating drum or rotor mounted on a
shaft driven by a cone clutch designed to engage in a driver attached
to the pump pinion gear. The rotor has four slots in it s periphery in
which are mounted vanes which slide in and out as the rotor turns, being
guided by a cam or eccentric on each head. The rotor shaft turns in
plain bearings in the heads which are off - set or eccentric in relation -to
the center . of the housing. The rotor runs very close to the inside of the

housing on one side while on the ot her side there 1S a substantial gap
or space between the rotor and the housing. As the rotor turns to the
left this space between vanes gets larger, drawing air from the main
pump in at the inlet, then as it turns farther the spac e gets sm:dler and
finally the air is forced out at the outlet. This process is repeated four
times during each revolution of the rotor. As the air is exhausted from
the main pump, atmospheric pressure causes the water to flow into the
pump through the suction hose, thereby "priming" the pump.
The vanes are equipped with sealing strips where they contact the
housing . They can be easily renewed if necessary.
The vacuum pump is lubricated automatically by a large oiler locat e d
under the front seat.
C 4
PRESSURE GOVERNOR (Models 400 & 500)
The pump pressure governor is of the spring loaded diaphragm type
with hydraulic remote control and is illustrated in Fig. 5. The governor
proper is mounted on the engine under the carburetor, and consists of a
throttle box and shaft, the latter having a gear on the outer end which
is engaged by teeth turned on the governor piston. The piston is held
against the governor diaphragm by the governor spring which normally
NEE DLE VALVE

FIG.S
PUMP PRESSURE GOVERNOR
bolds the throttle wide open.
Pump pressu re enters the gover-
nor head through the connection
shown and, if sufficient to over-
come the spring pressure, it wi ll
force the diaphragm and piston
back and thereby close the throttle
until the pump pressure corre-
sponds with the governor setting.
The governor spring is mounted ,
at the end opposite the diaphra grn. ,
in a piston with a rubber cup sirn.-
ilar to that in a conventional auto-
rn.obile whee l brake cylinder . The
cylinder (called the slave cylinder)
in which this piston works, is con-
nected by copper tubing to the re-
rn.ote control unit (Fig. 5), mounted
on the pump control panel.
The governor head is e"quipped
with a needle valve. The needle
point is flattened t o permit a slight
continuous flow of water to the ground.
The purpose of this is to stabilize the governor action. Should the flow
stop, due to clogging, the obstruction can usually be flushed out by opening
the needle valve a few turns for a few seconds and reclosing.
The governor control unit consists principally of a small automobile
brake master cylinder, equipped with a threaded attachment with a crank
whereby the piston may be moved in or out. If the piston is moved in it
forces the hydraulic fluid out through the tubing line and into the hydraulic
cylinder on the engine unit. This forces the piston in the slave cylinder
forward, compressing the governor spring, and thereby raising the pump
pressure necessary to close the governor throttle. The governor control
crank screw and nut- attachment, which operates the master cylinder, also
engages a vertical shaft on which the pressure indicating dial is mounted.
The dial is calibrated to show the pump pressure which cor-
responds with the governor setting. The dial carrier also acts as a com-
mutator to control th.e dial light.
C 5
,
PRESSURE GOVERNOR (MODEL 900)
The pressure governor on the model 900 pumpers operates on the same
principle as that on the 400 &- 500 models. The only difference in oper-
ation is that the throttle box is in combination with a velocity type engine
speed governor and the pump governor engine unit is separate and con-
nected to the engine governor throttle by means of a rod and a pickup
lever.
PUMP OPERATION AT DRAFT
Locate the pump as near the source of water supply as possible. Set
parking brake. Before leaving the driver's seat the operator should reach
down on the left side of driver's seat and pull out the control lever knob
(see Fig. 3) then shift the control lever forward into central or "out"
position. Now pla ce the road transmission in "Direct" gear. This leaves
the engine driving the pump transmission but in neutral or "out I' position.
The operator may now dismount. Connect the suctions, being sure that
the suction strainer is attached and all gaskets are in place and in good
condition. All connections must be tight. When placing 'the suction strainer
in the water it should be held off the bottom about 12 inches if possible
to avoid drawing sand and pebbles into the pump. It should also be sub-
merged to a depth of 18 inches or more. Be sure all discharge gates and
drains are closed. When hose lines are attached and you are ready to
deliver water (not before) proceed as follows: Pull out the knob on the
control lever, shift into "Pump" position and release knob. The pump is
now running. Immediately open throttle slightly to give an engine speed
of 700 to 800 R.P .M. then pull out the primer button and hold until water
is discharged from the vacuum pump, or until pressure shows on the
pressure gauge, then release button. Now open one or two discharge lines
slowly, at the same time opening the throttle until steady water flow is es-
tablished. All required discharge valves may now be opened and the
throttle opened to give desired pressure. Note: - If pump should filil to
"take hold " promptly pull out the prime button again, momentarily, leaving
discharge valves and . throttle" as were". As soon as pumping has started
open, the cooler valve about one full turn. It should later be adjusted to
maintain engine temperature at about 170 to 180 degrees.
Note the position of the "RED" pointer on the pressure gauge. If the
required pump pressure is higher than the pressure indicated by the red
pointer, pull out the "Volume-Pressure" knob; this causes the pump to
automatically change from parallel (Volume) to series (Pressure) operation.
If pressure requirements later fall below the red hand position and greater
volume of water is desired, be sure to push the "Volume-Pressure" .knob
in. It is not necessary to close throttle or discharge gates when changing
the knob position.
If pressure regulation is to be turned over to the governor, first set
the governor dial by means of the crank handle to the required pressure,
then open the "GOVERNOR VALVE". The governor should then be ad-
justed so that the desired pressure shows on the pressure gauge. The
C 6
throttle should be opened somewhat (but not much) beyond that required
to maintain the desired pump pressure with the governor in .::ontrol.
Note carefully the following: if, with throttle wide open, and more pres-
sure is called for than can be obtained by cranking the governor dial up,
it is an indication that the maximum capacity of the pump at the indicated
pressure has been reached. The governor should be immediately cranked
down until the pressure drops slightly, otherwise, if a nozzle is closed
the pump pressure will go up to the higher setting of the governor dial.
Meanwhile if the higher pressure must be obtained it will be necessary
to shut off or throttle one of the hose lines or else put on smaller nozzle
tips.
PUMP OPERATION AT HYDRANT
Operation at a hydrant is exactly the same as at draft with two ex-
ceptions ; first, all priming operations are eliminated and, second, the
hydrant pressure shown on the suction gauge should be added to the pres-
sure indicated by the red pointer and the sum should represent the pres-
sure at which the change-ov er from v olume to pressure or vice versa
should be accomplished; for example if the red pointer indicates 190 lbs.
and the suction gauge while pumping shows 42 lbs., call the latter 40,
added to 190 equals 230 lbs. Change -over should therefore be made at
230 lbs. gauge pressure. The pump will function satisfactorily without
this second precaution, but, if maximum performance is desired, that is
one way to get it.
The suction hose may be attached and hydrant turned on at any time,
but do not open discharge gates until pump control lever is in PUMP posi-
tion; otherwise, with water flowing through the pump, the pump shaft will
spin and make i t difficult to engage the pump gears.
PUMP OPERATION FOR "BOOSTER" LINES
After pumper is spotted, proceed as when going to draft leaving the
road transmission in "direct" drive and the pump control lever in "out"
position. Open booster tank valve (or hydrant connection if tank is not
used) . When ready to pump, shift pump control lever to "PUMP" posi-
tion. Open throttle to give engine speed of 700 to 800 R.P .M. and open
valve or valves to the booster hose. Now, if the pump is dry, pull out
the prime knob to engage the vacuum pump for about five seconds to
expel the air from the pump (if pump is carried full of water this will
not be necessary ) , and open the throttle only enough to give approximately
the pressure desired. Pull out the "Volume-Pressure" knob to put the
pump in series operation, regardless of pressure required, and re-adjust
throttle to desired pressure.
It is usually not necessary to use the auxiliary cooler when operating
the booster system.
Naturally, if 21/2" hose lines are put into use in addition to the
booster lines, use of cooler and setting of Volume-Pressure control will
C 7
be the same as in operation at draft or at hydrant previously outlined.
SHUTTING DOWN
When pumping is finished close the throttle, move pump control lever
directly to .. ROAD" position then, BEFORE RELEASING KNOB, shift road
transmission to neutral. Close cooler and governor valves and adjust
governor to low pressure position (dial light out). Close hydrant (if at
hydrant) and open hose line drains ready to pick up hose.
In freezing weather pull out drain control button and let pump drain
until draining is complete. Draining may be hastened by opening discharge
gates and removing suction cups.
GENERAL HINTS
Remember that the pump is provided with the "VOLUME" or parallel
feature to obtain a large volume of water only. When only a small
quantity of water is required as for one line of 2 liz' hose or, as a b o v e ~
for booster lines only, operating in "PRESSURE" or series position will
give slower engine speeds and will be easier on the engine and pump.
On the other hand, if large volumes of water are required, operating in
"Pressure" position will reduce the capacity of the pump and, if operating
from draft, will result in the pump "running away from the water".
In operating from draft with very high suction lift, such as 14 to 25
feet from the water to the pump suction, or with suction hose smaller
than standard for the pumper capacity, or if the strainer should become
clogged with weeds or debris, the capacity of the pump will be reduced.
The amount of capacity reduction will depend upon the extent of the ab-
normal conditions, Under such conditions the pump will tend to "run away
from the water", when its capacity under such conditions has been reached.
In other words, the engine will speed up without any increase in pressure
or output. When this happens, opening the throttle wider will do no good
and is actually harmful. It is best to close the throttle just to the point
at which further closing causes a drop in pump pressure; this is the
point at which the best possible results can be obtained. If the pressure
so obtained is inadequate there are only three things that can be done;
first, if possible, eliminate the abnormal conditions by cleaning the strainer,
putting on proper size suction hose, shorter suction hose, placing the pumper
for lower lift, etc.; second, cut off one or more hose lines until the re-
maining lines have enough pressure; third, reduce the size of the nozzle
tips.
Exactly the same condition may arise when pumping from a hydrant
on a small water main with inadequate hydrant pressure. In this case
nothing can be done excepting to adjust the number of hose lines and/or
nozzle tip sizes to the amount of water available. When operating from
sITlall hydrants or small water mains always watch the suction gauge and
open throttle no farther than will leave at least 5 pounds pressure showing
on the gauge. If soft suction hose is being used the hose will collapse and
C 8
shut water supply off mome nt arily unless some pressure on hose is
maintained. If hard hose is being used there is little to be gained by
pulling a vacuum on the hydrant and it may, in some cases, be harmful.
FIRE STREAMS
Friction loss is the resistance to the flow of water, caused by the
moving stream in contact with the inside of the hose or pipe. The loss
accounts for the difference in pre ssure between pumper and nozzle. It
is proportional to the length of hose and to the quantity of water flowing,
therefore , to the nozzle s i ~ e also.
The following approximate and convenient way to determine the friction
loss in hose is easily memorized. The pump operator should know about
how many hundred feet of hose are in the .line and the nozzle that is being
used. Then for a single 2-1/2" line, with ordinary working pressure of
50 pounds per sq.in. at the nozzle, the friction loss per 100 ft. of hose
is as follows:
3/4" nozzle = 4 ; 7;8" = 7; 1" = 10; 1-1;8 "= 18; 1-1/4" = 25.
It will be noted that the loss in each case is indicated by part of the
number denoting the nozzle size. Example: A1200 ft . lay of 2-1/2"
single line haVIng a 3/4 nozzle would have about 12 x 4 or 48 pounds friction,
Adding the noz'zle pressure of 50 pounds, makes a required pressure of 98
pounds at the pumper. A 400 ft . lay of 2- 1/2" single line with 1-1/4"
nozzle would have about 4 x 25 or 100 pounds friction. Adding the nozzle
pressure of 50 pounds makes a required pressure of 150 pounds at the
pumper. Where 2-1/2" lines are doubled from pumper to a siamese the
loss in the doubled portion is about 1/4 that of a sing le line of the same
length.
When the nozzle is considerably higher than the pump, as when on a
hill, upper floor of a building or on a water tower, add 5 pounds for each
12 ft. elevation to total hose loss. When a deluge set, turret pipe or water
tower is used add 6 t o 10 pounds to total hose loss for friction loss in the
equipment.
CARE OF PUMP
Change oil in the pump transmission about every SIX months to a year
depending upon the amount of service. Put is about 3 pints of #90 S.A.E.
lubricating oil.
Fill the glass cup on the vacuum pump oiler after each usage of
priming pump. Use S .A.E.#90 oil. This cup is reached by.removing the
seat cushion.
NOTE: During winter weather S.A.E.#50 oil provides more reliable lubri-
cation.
Lubricate the vacuwn pump operating vacuum cylinder every six months.
Disconnect the rod from the cylinder to the vacuum pump lever. Remove
C 9
the hose at the end of the cylinder and put in about one ounce of Bendix
vacuum cylinder oil, or Delco shock absorber fluid. Work the piston rod
in and out and rotate back and forth to thoroughly lubricate the piston.
Do the same with the clutch operating vacuum cylinder. For the other
lubricating points about the pump a centralized group of six alemite fittings
are mounted back of the passenger seat cushion, with tubing running to the
points to be lubricated. These fittings are made accessible by moving the
seat cushion forward.
Give each fitting about two
in the case of busy apparatus;
over lubricate.
shots of medium cup grease every month
less often according to service . Do not
Should pump packing develop excessive leakage, the packing boxes may
be readily adjusted by means of the adjusting screw on the adjusting yoke .
CAUTION: - Packing adjustment should be made while pumping water and
should not be a djusted so ' tight as to prevent a slight drip of water from
around the pump shaft. Otherwise the packing may be damaged and the
pump shaft scored.
If the pump is seldom used in the high pressure, or series, position,
thereby permitting the piston type parallel-series valve to remain in one
position for a long period of time, the latter may accumulate sediment or
slight corrosion, causing it to sti ck. To prevent this the pump should be
operated in series, if only for a minute or two, at least once each month.
This may be done with the booster system, and the pump should be oper-
ated in series and parallel alternately a few times to insure that the valve
is working properly.
CARE OF PRESSURE GOVERNOR
Keep the governor throttle box at the carburetor clean. Use a few
d rops of household or light engine oil on the diaphragm piston each week .
This is the small oil hole on the top of the governor piston body near the
diaphragm. Do not over oil as too much may rot the diaphragm. Oil the
governor set shaft at the hole below the dial strip.
Keep the master cylinder at the governor set dial filled with genuine
Lockheed hydraulic brake fliud. A bleeder screw is provided at the slav e
cylinder on the governor throttle box so that the hydraulic system may be
properly filled, should it be necessary to remove the governor for ad-
justment or repair.
DISCHARGE GATES
The discharge gates are of a modified ball type, with a twist type
locking lever handle . The ball incorporates . a synthetic rubber seal ring
held in place by a removable shoe. This ring seals against a seat in
the valve body, back of the ball. The seal ring is readily replaced , shoul'i
it become necessary by removing the lever (note: on R .H.valves discon-
nect linkage and remove Allen head set screws) and turning the ball 180 a
from the c-losed position so that the shoe and ring are exposed. The hose
thread adapter may be rem oved to make t he shoe more accessible. Be
C 10
sure the new ring is properly placed and the shoe securely fastened tight
with the screws.
Be sure the lever and associated parts are replaced in the same manner
as originally assembled. The lever handle should be screwed in just far
enough to make the locking shoes snug but not tight and the self locking
nut screwed up tight. This will limit the travel of the handle in the un-
locked position and make locking effective with a minimum of turning.
Lubricate weekly by squirting oil with oil can on trunnions at each
side of ball with valve open and on valve seat at rea r with valve half open.
DO NOT LUBRICATE LOCK SHOES.

SECTION C - 2
BOOSTER PUMP - HIGH PRESSURE TYPE
The Seagrave booster pump is of the four-stage straight series type.
In other words, when the pump is operating, the water passes successively
through all of the four individual impellers. . Referring to the illustration,
the water enters #1 impeller at the front of the pump. Passageways cored
into the pump casing carry the water to #2 impeller, thence it "leap-frogs"
to the rear end impeller, which is #3, and finally is discharged from #4.
Each impeller adds pressure to that already built up by the previous one.
The pump casing surrounding the impellers is of the "volute" type, and
is split horizontally. It is designed to safely withstand more than 1000 lbs.
pressure. The casing is equipped with renewable sealing rings.
LONGITUDINAL SECTION
HIGH PRESSURE PUMP
The pump shaft is made of
stainless steel and is surface
hardened and ground. It is car-
ried on a large size ball bearing
on the front end where gear loads
are imposed. A graphite bronze
bearing is located between each
impeller and at the rear end.
Only one packing box is required
and this is at the suction end of '.
the pump where it is not sub-
jected to high pressure. It is of

The pump is driven by a conventional heavy duty power take-off attached
to the side of the road transmission to which the pump in-put shaft is con-
nected by a shaft and a pair of universal joints.
OPERATION
The pump is designed primarily to take water from the booster tank.
The pipe connection from the booster tank to the pump is equipped with a
gate valve with an extension shaft to a control disk or wheel on the operators
side of the apparatus. The pump discharge is usually connected only to the
booster hose reel, or reels.
C-l. - 1
After the machine has been spotted, open the tank valve to admit water
to the pump; also, open the valve, or valves, leading to the booster hose,
to allow the air in the pump to escape. These valves are marked" Reel
Aux." (See illustration .. TYPICAL HIGH PRESSURE PUMP CONTROLS").
Now engage the pump by first de clutching, then pulling out the knob on
the dash panel marked" Pump" and reclutching. This engages the power
take-off which drives the pump. The road transmission is, of course, left
in neutral position. CAUTION: DO NOT run the pump dry.

CAUTION: The pump drive
mechanism will not absorb
the full power of the engine;
hence it is important that the
throttle be opened only enough
to produce the pressure de-
sired, and as indicated on the
high pressure gauge. The
pump is equipped with a

valve which is normally set
at the factory at about 850 lbs. It may be set higher ( 1000 lbs. maximum)
or lower if desired. To adjust, release the lock nut and turn the adjusting
screw IN for high pressure or OUT for lower pressure. However, the throt-
tle should never be opened to produce pressure higher than about 50 lbs.
under the relief valve setting. The governor (or pressure regulator) cannot
be used in connection with the booster pump.
The pump is equipped with a by-pass line to prevent over-heating of
the pump if it is operated for brief periods of time with nozzles shut off.
This by-pass goes through a cooling coil in the pump gear box to prevent
overheating of same . It is entirely automatic.
The pump may be used with the apparatus

If pumping operations should continue for a long period of time the
engine water temperature may rise to a point requiring the use of the auxil-
iary cooler. On apparatus having a conventional fire pump in addition to the
booster pump, FIRST OPEN WIDE the rear of two valves, the controls for
C - 2 - 2
which are located just forward of the PUMP CONTROL LEVER, then open
slightly the COOLER VALVE located on the pump control panel. Open this
valve more or less as is required to maintain the engine temperature at from
160 to 180 degrees. If the main fire pump is to be used, FIRST OPEN WIDE
the forward of the two valves mentioned above, then regulate the engine tem-
perature with the same COOLER VALVE on the pump control panel. In either
case, open the front valve before opening the one on the control panel and
close the latter before closing the front valves. Care in this matter will pre-
vent poss ible excessive pressure being built up in the cooler. If the apparatus
is equipped with only a booster pump, there will be only one cooler valve and
it will be located on the pump control panel. For the average short time
use age of the booster pump, the use of the cooler will usually not be neces-
sary. (For Standard main pump controls see Fig. 3, Section C.)
Due to varying specifications covering booster pump installations, a de-
tailed illustration of controls will be accurate only in a general way. The
illustration shown is typical, but the details may vary from those on your
machine; however, no difficulty should be experienced in operation if valve
markings are observed.
MAINTENANCE
The pump gear box is equipped with a drain plug in the bottom and an
oil level plug. The oil should be drained yearly and a Jre sh supply of about
one pint of S.A.E. No 50 gear lubricant replaced. Do not fill above the level
plug as overheating of gear box will result. Check oil level every three
months.
Two pressure fittings are provided, one at the rear end of the pump
shaft and one on the front projection of the gear box. Give these fittings
about two shots of medium cup grease every month.
There is an open drain hole about 3/4" in diameter in the lower side
of the chamber surrounding the packing at the front end of the pump, just
back of the gear box. This opening should be kept open! Each month, when
lubricating the pump pressure fittings, probe this opening with a piece of wire
to be sure it is clear of obstruction. Should it become clogged there is a
possibility of water getting into the pump gear box with serious results.
During freezing weather the pump should be drained after each use. A
push-pull button operates a centralized drain control. The button should be
left in the .. OUT" or drain position until all draining stops.

CARE OF PINION BEARINGS
Pinion bearings are lubri-
cated from the differential hous-
ing and need no adjustments
between major axle overhaul. The pmlOn and gear are hypoid type and ad-
justments should only be made by an experienced axle repair man. The gear
thrust screw" J" (Fig. 2) may be checked occasionally. It should be screwed
in just snug and backed out 1/4 turn. This gives a clearance of from .010 to
.015. Lock securely with jam nut.
LUBRICATION
The axle is equipped with" Hypoid" type bevel gears. The gears are
stronger and more efficient than conventional spiral bevels but they require
more modern types of lubrication for best operation These lubricants are
known as the . Extreme Pressure" types.
Under all normal conditions of fire department service S.A.E. grade # 140
may be used year around. In the rare instances where apparatus is housed in
unheated quarters in cold climate S.A.E. grade #90 should be used in winter.

BRAKING SYSTEM
The braking system is of the four wheel, hydraulic type, powered by a
Bendix Hydrovac unit. The brakes are actuated by a brake master cylinder
which is mechanically connected ro the brake foot pedal. The master cyl-
inder (see Fig. l) differs from the conventional type in that no residual
check valve is used at the outlet, this being a part of the Hydrovac unit. The
master cylinder is used both as a control for the Hydrovac power and as a
supply to replenish the brake fluid in the system.

brake drum and, as a result, the
pistons in the wheel cylinders must
travel farther; this requires more
brake fluid and the brake pedal must
be depressed farther to enable the
master cylinder to deliver the in-
creased quantity of fluid . When the
brake pedal nears the floor board
upon full brake application the brakes
should be adjusted without delay as
follows:
The braking system is shown
schematically in Fig. 2, and the
Hydrovac unit is described later.
The front axle is equipped
with" Wagner Lockheed" brakes
and the rear axle with "Timken

MAJOR ADJUSTMENT - FRONT BRAKES
(Relining brake shoes)
Brake shoes (E-Fig. 3) are anchored and pivoted on eccentric pins
(G - Fig. 3). Pins (C - Fig. 3) act as guides and remove the tendency to
weave and chatter. Return spring (B - Fig. 3) keeps the shoes in released
or off position against cam .. D ". Links (H) connect the upper end of shoe
to the wheel cylinder .
To remove shoes: - Remove C-washers (F and J - Fig. 3), remove re-
turn spring (B) swing shoes out and remove connecting links (H). Shoes
may then be removed.
Shoes should be relined by an authorized service station having proper
equipment.
After the relined shoes are installed, proceed as follows:
Adjust the lining against the drum by means of the eccentric anchor pins
(F-Fig. 4) and rotating adjustment nut{E-Fig. 4). Clearance may be set
by means of feeler gauges about 1 - 1/2 inches from the end of the lining. The
recommended clearance is .005 at the heel or lower end of the shoe and .010
at the toe or upper end of the shoe.

DESCRIPTION
As illustrated in Figure 1, the shoes (1) are fitted with liners of equal
length and identical material and are not anchored but .. float" in the lever
arms ( 10 ). The single straight bore hydraulic wheel cylinder (6) actuates the
lever arms which in turn apply pressure at the center of the shoes by means
of the movable pressure blocks ( 13) The shoes are self centered at the time
of contact with the drums. Shoe rotation is prevented by the self aligning
abutment blocks (3 and 17) which bear against the angled face of the shoes.
Figure one: Half of left brake lever has been removed to show brake shoe,
abutment blocks, pressure block and other parts which otherwise would be
concealed from view.

SHOE ADJUST MENT
(Minor for normal wear)
Item" A" in Figure 2 is the eccentric anchor pins that control the shoe
movement toward or away from the drum. To decrease the lining to drum
clearance - proceed as follows:
1. Raise vehicle so wheels are free to rotate.
2. Use a 1-1/4 in. wrench to loosen nut" B".
3. Position a t in. open end wrench on the flat section of anchor pin" A"
so that the wrench hand extends away from the vertical line of the brake.
Apply pressure toward the ground until shoe contacts drum, then back
off to a minirrlUm running clearance . (Approximately It in. travel at
end of 8 in. wrench.)
D - 6
4. Lock adjustInent with nut" B", and rotate wheel in both directions to
check for free running clearance.
S. Each brake is equipped with two brake ?hoes and eccentric adjusting
pins, adjust each shoe in the manner described above which is illus-
trated in Figure 2.
CAUTIONS
Make sure wheel bearing adjustment is correct before attempting brake
adjustment.
Make sure the adjustment.is securely IO,cked.
Make sure liners are not worn excessively permitting rivets to contact
drwns.

SHOE RELINING
As illustrated in Figure 3 it is not
necessary to disturb the main retracting
spring when removing shoes for re-
lining. Shoe assemblies are removed
as follows:
1. Remove brake shoe and lever
pressure spring and retainer
by inserting a screw driver under
the side of the spring near the re-
tainer and prying them out of the
recess. Do not remove main re-
tracting spring.
2. Shoes can now be removed from
levers. The pressure block may
also be removed if desired.
3. When reassembling the shoes apply grease lubricant to both angle faces
and the pressure block surface of the shoe. If the pressure block has
been removed, it can be .. stuck" in position on the shoe by means of
the grease.
4. Rotate the eccentric pins to full release position.
S. Insert the shoe spring and retainer in the lever slot and force into
central position.
NOTE: As illustrated in Figure 4, the spring and retainer must be compressed
completely to permit insertion in the slot. For field servicing where a tool
with' a square tapered hole is not available, the use of a .. plier wrench" or
"crescent wrench" will be found very satisfactory for compressing and holding
the spring and retainer. With the compressed spring in the wrench, it can be
placed against the lever and aligned with the slot. A small hammer can be
used to tap the spring and retainer from the wrench into the lever slot.
CAUTIONS
Make sure there is free movement of abutment blocks on the upper and

lower anchor pins. Make sure the spring retainer is properly seated in the
lever arITl. The retainer should be flush with the outside of lever.

MAINTENANCE HINTS
Regardless of good ITlaterials and design. friction results in wear and
replaceITlents are necessary. When ITlajor repairs are considered it is rec-
oITlITlended that the following points be checked for wear or ITlisalignITlent.
D - 8
1. Worn brake anchor pins.
2. Wear at lever to adjusting anchor pin holes.
3. Worn or bent" C" washers.
4. Wear between pressure block and lever saddle surfaces.
5. hnproper brake return spring tension.
6. Bent anchor pins or brackets.
7. Wheel cylinder fluid leaks and condition of boots and mounting holes.
In case of leaky wheel cylinders they should be replaced or serviced by
an authorized service station. Such servicing requires special equipment
which is rarely available in a fire department shop.
To remove the wheel cylinder, disconnect tubing or hose at wheel cyl-
inder inlet, unhook brake shoe return spring. Remove two cap screws which
hold cylinder to the backi ng plate and cylinder may then be withdrawn for
inspection. CAUTION - Prevent brake fluid from corning in contact with
brake linings either by dripping or from soiled hands.
BLEEDING WHEEL CYLINDERS
NOTE: The Hydrovac system should be bled first. See Bendix Hydrovac
instructions.
A bleeder valve projects at a slight upward angle from the center of
each wheel cylinder, immediately above the hose connection, the outer end
of this screw being provided with a hexagon shoulder to receive a wrench.
The passage through the bleeder valve is threaded to receive a plug or dust
screw, the head of which is also hexagon shaped. Remove this plug with
wrench, after which the fitting at the end of the rubber drain tube may be
screwed in place.
Open bleeder valve about three-quarters of a turn of the wrench, and
allow the free end of the rubber tape to hang in a clean container, such as
a fruit jar.
Depress the foot pedal by hand through its full stroke, allowing the
return spring to return the pedal to its released or .. off" position. Continue
this operation until fluid expelled from Bleeder Hose is free of bubbles.
Approximately ten strokes of the pedal will be necessary to bleed each
wheel cylinder.
As each wheel cylinder is bled, the bleeder valve is shut off tightly
with a wrench, the tube is remove<;i and the plug replaced.
When bleeding, be sure to keep the master cylinder supply tank more
than half full of fluid, otherwise air will be drawn into the system, neces-
sitating rebleeding. (It is not necessary to replace filler plug after each
filling during the bleeding operation.) Liquid that has been drained through
D - 9
bleeder valve should not be used to refill supply tank.
When bleeding operation is completed, refill the supply tank and replace
filler plug, screwing it down tightly.
Rebleeding the system is necessary only when some part of the hydraulic
mechanism has been disconnected.
DON'TS
DON'T use any substitute for Lockheed Brake Fluid. Lockheed Brake Fluid
is prepared by the originators of Lockheed Brakes with an exact knowledge
of the :requirements and the dangers of substitution. Substitutes will be lacking
important factors and will result in damage to the component parts of the
system.
DON'T allow grease, paint, oil, or brake fluid to corne in contact with the
brake lining.
DON'T clean rubber parts or inside of cylinders with anything but alcohol.
DON'T use kerosene (coal oil), or gasoline.
DON'T reline one wheel with a different make of lining than is used on the
others, as you .cannot expect equal braking effect if this is done.
DON'T allow the supply tank to be less than half-full of brake fluid.

BENDIX HYDROV AC UNIT
The Hydrovac consists of three basic units (see illustrations) which
have been so combined that they function as a single unit, all of which are
controlled by hydraulic pressure developed within the master cylinder of the
vehicle. The three basic units are:
1 A hydraulically actuated vacuum control valve which controls the
degree of bra.ke application or release. The control valve consists of a hy-
draulic actuated piston, a diaphragm, and a vacuum and an atmospheric pop-
pet .

2. A vacuum power cylinder which contains either a single or tandem
piston and a push-rod that connects the vacuum piston to the hydraulic piston
of the hydraulic cylinder.
3. A hydraulic cylinder which contains a piston with a check valve and
a residual line pressure check valve. As the brake pedal is depressed, the
hydraulic pressure developed within the master cylinder is transmitted to the
hydraulic pist on of the control valve and to the hydraulic cylinder . With
pressure applied to the control valve piston, the vacuum valve closes and the
D - 11
atmospheric valve opens to admit air to control side of the vacuum power
cylinder. As air is admitted, the forces acting upon the vacuum power cyl-
inder pistons are transmitted directly to the hydraulic piston through the
push-rod. As the hydraulic piston starts to move, the piston check valve
closes trapping fluid under pressure ahead of the piston.
The total hydraulic pressure created and transmitted to the wheel cylinders,
is the sum of the pressure developed as a result of the vacuum power cylinder
push-rod thrust and the pressure received by the Hydrovac from the master
cylinder.
As the brake pedal is released, the pressure within the control valve
hydraulic piston chamber is reduced, allowing the atmospheric poppet to close
and reopen the vacuum poppet. The vacuum power cylinder piston is again
balanced in vacuum and returns to release position. When the hydraulic
piston nears the release end of its stroke, its check valve reopens, thus per-
mitting the full release of the brakes.
BLEEDING THE HYDROV AC UNIT ON THE VEHICLE
Bleeding requires filling the master cylinder re servoir and pumping the
brake pedal to force the fluid through lines to expel air from the system.
CAUTION: This operation must be done with the engine OFF and no vacuum
in the power brake system.
With the master cylinder reservoir filled, open No. 1 bleed screw on
Hydrovac a nd depress the brake pedal to expel air. When the pedal has
r each ed the t oe board, close bleed screw before returning pedal to release
position. Repeat this procedure until solid fluid, free from bubbles, comes
from the bleed screw, checking the master cylinder reservoir frequently to
insure an ample supply of fluid. Using this method, bleed No.1 and No.2
bleed screws on the Hydrovac and then proceed to the vehicle wheel cylinders.
LUBRICATION
On the single units a 1/8" pipe tap is located at the rear end of the
Hydrovac cylinder, near the bottom. On the tandem units a 1/8" pipe con-
nection is located on the front, near the bottom and also one about the middle
of the cylinder.
Inject 2 or 3 ounces of Bendix vacuum cylinder oil or Delco Shock
Absorber fluid about once every 6 months into these openings.

CONNECTION P ~ R T
In case of improper functioning of brakes, the following major items should
be checked:
(1) If machine pulls to one side during brake application, look for
grease on brake lining or defective lining.
(2) If brakes are not effective look for:
(a) Worn or defective brake.
(b) Lack of vacuum in system. This may be checked with vacuum
gauge connected into the vacuum line. With engine at normal
idling ~ p e e d the vacuum should be from 14 to 17 inches. If
vacuum is low look for leaky hose or connections in vacuum lines.
(c) Leaky master cylinder or insufficient fluid in master cylinder.
(d) Leaky wheel cylinders.
(e) Hydrovac unit not functioning properly.
If aI?-Y of the last three items are found to be faulty, the offending units
should be replaced or sent to an authorized service station for checking and
proper repair.
D-13
SHOC K ABSORBERS
The shock absorbers are the Delco, hydraulic, double acting type, Model
200 I-B. They should require little servicing and this will consist of occas-
ional filling with hydraulic fluid
To refill the shock absorbers on the machine proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect the link at the lower end.
2. Wipe off all dirt around the filler plug and remove the plug.
3.. Fill to capacity, using .. Delco Shock Absorber Fluid." Work arm
slowly up and down while adding fluid, using an improvised extension
for the arm to provide additional leverage.
4. Replace filler plug using new gasket if necessary.
5. Re-connect the link, being sure that all connections are tight.
Check bolts holding shock absorber to frame to insure tightness .
In case the shock absorbers do not function properly they should be
serviced by an authorized Delco service station or a mechanic thoroughly
familiar with such units.
GENERAL CHASSIS HINTS
Check the spring clip nuts, at least yearly, to be sure that they are
absolutely tight. Erratic steering or improper .. tracking to of the vehical
may result if the spring clips are allowed to get loose.
All nuts and bolts about the chassis should be checked, at least yearly,
to be sure they are in place and tight.
Keep all working connections, such as clevis, yokes, ball joints, etc.,
clean and lubricated.
Do not neglect greasing of spring shackles, steering connections, front
axle parts, etc., at regular intervals.
KEEP ENTIRE APPARATUS CLEAN.
D - 14
SECTION E
STEERING GEAR
The only service that should be necessary for several years will be to
keep the gear properly lubricated. The gear should be checked at least
yearly and lubricant added if necessary. Remove oil plug "1" ( see illus-
tration) and add lubricant slowly until it begins to run out of vent hole" 8 ".
Use lubricants that are especially recommended for steering gears such as
.. Mobilube GX-140" or equal. Do not use ordinary grease. The lubricant,
in any case, should have a viscosity of S.A.E. 140, winter and summer.
STEERING GEAR ADJUSTMENTS
After long service the steering gear may need some adjustments to
compensate for normal wear as follows:
When making adjustments free the steering gear of all load, preferably
by disconnecting the drag link from the steering arm, and loosen instrument
board bracket clamp on steering gear jacket tube.
If the ball thrust bearings on the cam must be adjusted, make the ad-
justment (I) before making the side adjustment (II).

moval of shim (5). (Shims are
of .002", .003" and .010" thick-
ness)
Clip and remove a thin shim,
or more as required. Re -assemble
clamp screws and tighten. Draw
down tight. Test adjustment and
if necessary remove or replace
shims until adjustment is correct.
II. ADJUSTMENT FOR MINIMUM BACKLASH OF TAPERED STUDS
IN CAM GROOVE
Adjust so that a very slight drag is felt through the mid-position while
turning the steering wheel slowly from one extreme position to the other.
Backlash of studs in the groove shows up as backlash at steering wheel
and at ball on steering arm.
The groove is purposely cut shallower, therefore, narrower, in the mid-
position range of travel of each stud to provide close adjustment where usu-
ally the straight-ahead-driving action takes place. It also makes this close
adjustment possible after normal wear occurs without causing a bind else-
where.
Therefore, adjust through the mid-position. Do not adjust in positions
off mid-position as backlash at these points is normal and not objectionable.
To adjust, tighten side cover adjusting screw (10) until the adjustment
is correct and tighten the lock nut (9) to hold it. Then give the gear a
final test.
Secure the gear at all points loosened prior to making the adjustment.
Also check tightness of mounting bracket bolts and nuts, and of steering
arm on lever shaft and the nut and lockwasher ( 7 ) . With all supporting
brackets clamped tight, turn steering wheel to see if any stiffness exists.
If so, the column is probably out of alignment and needs correcting.
(Refer paragraph on .. Column Alignment". )
GENERAL INFORMATION
COLUMN ALIGNMENT
Alignment of the column is of paramount importance. THE STEERING
COLUMN MUST NOT BE SPRUNG IN ANY DIRECTION FROM ITS FREE
POSITI ON. To determine whether misalignment exists, release upper column
bracket a nd note whet her the column moves to a different position, its free
position. If it does, it has been out of line and should be re -clamped in
the new position or the condition corrected by other methods provided by
the vehicle manufacturer. Caution: If the column has been permanently
bent because of severe misalignment, the above test may not be reliable,
a n d replacement of the tubes will be necessary.
STEERING GEAR CONNECTION WITH FRONT WHEELS
Normally, the steer-ing gear should be in approximately its mid-position
when the front wheels are straight-ahead. To check, (the drag link must
be disconnected from the steering arm) turn the steering wheel to the right
E-2
as far as possible, then rotate the wheel in the opposite direction as far
as possible and note the total number of turns. Turn wheel back just one-
half of this total movement thus placing the gear in mid-position. Place
front wheels straight ahead. The ball on the steering gear arm should now
line up, or nearly so, with the ball socket on the drag link. If necessary,
the steering arm can be shifted on the splines of the lever shaft to change
o
the ball position. Shifting it one spline will shift the ball 10 .
