Appendix B
B GLOSSARY
A
1 Anti-stringing Mechanism –a mechanism (optical, mechanical, or a combination of both)
designed to prevent the unauthorized retrieving of Banknotes
from a Cash Box… See Page 1-6
B
2 Bezel – a removable Plastic Assembly attached to the front of the Banknote Insertion Slot
on a VEGA Unit. It features a rectangular shaped access opening (slot) for easy
insertion and retrieval of Banknotes. Bezels are available in different shapes and
sizes in order to accommodate Banknotes of different widths and different stacking
configurations… See Page 1-4
C
3 Calibration – a process performed on electronic equipment which ensures that all circuits
are properly aligned and operating at optimum levels. For VEGA, calibration
is accomplished using a software based program which checks and sets the
operational reference levels for Intake Sensors, Validation Sensors, and Edge
Sensors. This helps to ensure that the Unit operates with the highest Banknote
acceptance rate possible. Calibration is recommended whenever the CPU
Board, or one of the Sensor Boards are replaced… See Page 6-1
4 ccTalk – a Serial based Communications Protocol commonly used in control, electronic
payment, and vending systems. Developed by Money Controls Ltd., the format
enjoys widespread use throughout Europe. ccTalk is a supported communications
format in the VEGA Unit… See Page 6-12
5 Claw Hooks – specially molded tensioned Plastic Clips used to protect and retain the left
and right side Cable Harnesses on the Upper Assembly Section of the VEGA
Unit… See Page 4-1
6 Course Path Reversing Guide – a moveable guide located at the rear Section of the Banknote
Transport Path in a VEGA Unit which allows Banknotes
to be directed down to the VEGA Cash Box, up to the
optional VEGA RC Recycler, or back to the customer as
part of change-returning or recycling operations.
The removable Course Path Reversing Guide Cover
contains optical Lenses which help the VEGA Unit
determine if any Banknotes or debris are stuck in the
transport area path… See Page 1-4
7 CRC Checksum – a numerical value assigned to a data file or block of data (usually
expressed in hexadecimal notation). Checksum values are used to verify
that the contents of a data file are not corrupted in any way during trans-
mission or encryption. The Checksum values of both the original and
duplicate files are compared to each other. If the values match, then the
duplicate file is considered to be acceptable. In instances where the

16 LED – an acronym for Light Emitting Diode. An LED is a Semiconductor Device which
when turned on, emits a signal output in the visible light range. Available in a variety
of colors, LEDs are cost effective and are commonly used as Indicator Lights in a
variety of equipment devices. LEDs are also available in the invisible light range
(i.e., ultraviolet, near-infrared etc.) making them useful as operational
indicators for a variety of electronic equipment and applications, such as Banknote
Validation Circuits in the VEGA Unit… See Page 1-6
M
17 Magnetic Sensor – a Sensor located in the Banknote Validator’s Transport Path used to detect
the presence of Magnetic Ink found on Banknote denominations created
by certain Countries See Page 1-6 and Page A-1
18 Magnetic-ink – special ink used by certain Country’s in the production and printing of their
Banknotes as a deterrent to counterfeiting. In United States Currency, the
Black Ink used on the front side of the Banknote is Magnetically Metal
impregnated. Banknote Validators (like the VEGA) utilize Magnetic
Sensors in their Transport Path in order to detect and read the Magnetic
Ink Pattern density level… See Page 1-6
P
19 Photo-coupler – a method of increasing safety to both the equipment and personnel by
isolating and routing transmitted data signals via using a Light Emitting
Diode (LED) and a Photosensitive Transistor combination circuit in
various electronic equipment devices… See Page 1-6
20 pictograph – small internationally recognized safety and attention symbols placed to the
left of Notes, Cautions and Warnings throughout a JCM Maintenance Manual
… See Page 1-1
21 Plastic Retaining Tabs – six Plastic Retaining Tabs that are a molded part of the VEGA
Unit’s Upper Transport Frame Bottom Section retaining a clear
Plastic Housing that covers the CPU Circuit Board. Pressing in
on the Retaining Tabs allows the Upper Transport Frame Bottom
Section to slide out from the Upper Transport Frame Top Section.
If any Retaining Tab were to break, they CANNOT be ordered
individually, and will have to repaired by replacing the entire
Upper Transport Frame Bottom Section as a whole Assembly
… See Page 4-2
22 Precautions – a set of special instructions and warnings provided to the user in JCM
Maintenance Manuals. When read and properly followed, they are intended
to ensure personal safety and prevent unnecessary equipment damage when
working with the applicable JCM Product… See Page 1-2
R
23 Radio Screen Button – a term used as reference to an On-Screen selection Button (usually
circular in shape) which can be selected or de-selected by clicking
on it with a Computer Mouse. Radio Screen Buttons are frequently
used in desktop based applications to allow the user to enable or
select specific program functions or features… See Page 6-2

Appendix B VEGA™ Series BankNote Validator S
24 Reference Paper – specially coated/colored paper strips which are inserted into a Banknote
Validator when performing VEGA Unit Calibration. Reference Paper is
used to help set minimum and maximum threshold detection levels
when adjusting the Photo-optical Sensors in the unit for optimum
performance. The paper is usually available in two shades; White and
Black… See Page 6-4
S
25 Sensor – a Photosensitive Device and LED combination designed to detect timing and
movement events… See Page 1-2
26 Special Notes – notes provided to alert the reader to specific information which often affects
the operation of the Unit within JCM Maintenance Manuals. The notes are
provided throughout the Manual, and are identified by the pictograph of a
small hand pointing to the word “NOTE”. Special Notes are always written
in italic text… See Page 1-1
27 Sub Circuit Board – a circuit board located in the Lower Transport Assembly Section of the
VEGA Banknote Validator. Sub-Circuit Boards are available in both
12 Volt and 24 Volt Versions, depending on the user application.
For users needing to validate Currencies that employ Magnetic-Ink
printing, an optional MAG Circuit Board (containing a Magnetic
Level Sensor) is installed in the VEGA and then connected to the
Sub-Circuit Board… See Page 4-3
T
28 Tension Pulley – an Assembly located on the bottom side of the VEGA Base Carrier Unit
containing both a left-side and right-side set of Tension Pulleys. Their
purpose is to maintain an equal amount of tension on both the left and
right Transport Belts in order to avoid Belt slippage and Banknote trans-
portation errors… See Page 4-5
V
29 Validation – in Banknote Validators (such as the VEGA Unit), identifies the process of
drawing a Banknote into the Unit and then uses various Sensors to read and
determine the authenticity of the Banknote based on the comparison of
collected readings to a set of reference data stored in memory… See Page 1-3
30 Validator – a piece of electronic equipment designed to accept and validate the authenticity
of Banknotes used in cash transactions equipment or vending operations.
The validation process involves evaluating data received from Magnetic
Sensors, Optical Sensors, or a combination of both within the Unit. Validation
techniques are constantly being improved in order to thwart the efforts of
would-be counterfeiters. Newer validation technologies employ the use of
CMOS Photo-imaging Sensors to obtain even more accuracy and security.
JCM Global is a World Wide recognized leader in the field of Banknote
Validation… See Page 1-1
31 VEGA – a Brandname relating to a “Star”; it is new state-of-the-art Banknote Validator
offered by JCM Global. The combination of Banknote Acceptor and optional
VEGA RC Recycling Unit makes VEGA an attractive choice for AWP
(Amusement with Prize), Vending, and Payment Terminal Markets… See Page 1-1
