opens fire on the Chesapeake. Taken off guard.
Killing quite a few. Take a few sailors and force
them into the british navy. Jefferson waits for
things to cool off and doesn’t declare war.
Embargo Act
Peaceable coercion. Stop all exports of US good, and stop ship from going to foreign
ports. This hurts a lot of Americans and they began smuggling. The Economy will end up
being hurt. Jefferson signs a repeal of the emgargo act at the end of his term. 1809. leaves
office kindof on a down note. Hopefully Madison will be able to come up a solution…
but he cant.

stop violating US neutrality. Britain doesn’t exactly agree,
and this fails
Macons bill #2
Trys one more time. This takes an opposite approach. Says US will trade will everybody
including GB and France. Which ever one stops violating neutrality. US will cut the other
one off.
Napoleons response
Napoleon says this is a good idea. But is not a trustworthy guy. French still keep attacking
American shipping. Nothing is resolved.
Causes of the War.
In june of 1812, Madison asks congress to declare war on britiain. Congress agrees
Defense of neutral rights went to war to defend the neutral rights which GB has been
violating
War Hawks
They are yong new congressmen. 1810, Republicans. From west and southern states.
Aggressive. Ready for military action. While congressmen from north don’t want war,
New England merchants are still making money, war would cut off all trade.
Problems in the west.
Their region has been really hurt. Agriculture shipping is hurting to economy. Native
American problems as well. US wants to get Canada also. War hawks believe tribes are
getting weapons from GB.
The War
US declares war on England
We arent really ready for war. Federalists try to obstruct war efforts. Do what they can to
stay out of the war. Some of the fed get together at the Hartford convention. A couple of
delegates from each new England state. Try to come up with a formal statement some
radicals call for a secession from US. A lot of their ideas are starting to sound like
Jefferson’s ideas. They parties kinda switch positions. Theory of nullification
Invade Canada. The plan backfires, andthey pushback the Americans. The only
accomplishment is burning down york (Toronto). Now worried that british will come
down. US ship defeats british on lake erie, and prevents B from invading. Things are
going somewhat ok. On land is a different story. British will land near Washington DC.
American army is pretty weak and unorganized. B capture and burn DC.
National anthem comes out when Baltimore, neither win
Negotiations have been going on the whole time.
Treaty of Ghent, December of 1814
War between Gb and france has stopped, Both are ready to end war. Not much is stated,
but they just return to status before war.
There is still one more battle in this war because of the time it takes for word to travel. B
wants to capture New Orlands to control Mississippi river. There goal is to capature New
Orlands. Us sends Andrew Jackson to pulls mulitia. Pirates, freed blacks, woodsman all to
defend. By jan 1815 war is over, but hey don’t know, Jackson blocks off area of entrence.
British think jacksons men will be easy to defeat. The Americans slaughter British. 2000
