consumers in charge of the telemar-
keting calls they get at home. The
Federal government created the
national registry to make it easier and
more efficient for you to stop getting
telemarketing calls you don’t want.
You can register online at
WWW.DONOTCALL.GOV or call toll-
free, 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-
290-4236), from the number you wish
to register. Registration is free.
Placing your number on the registry
will stop most, but not all, telemarket-
ing calls.
Rong’n’marie, did a little research
and there’s more to it. The Do-Not-
Call Fee Extension Act of 2007 also
sets the annual fees telemarketers
can pay to access the registry in fiscal
year 2009. It’s $54 for each area code
of data accessed or $14,850 for
access to every area code in the reg-
istry, whichever is less.

Well Dalia, we have to hand it to
you dear lady, you’ve put us in our
place but still know nothing about
what crow taste like. It couldn’t be
worse than disgust or embarrass-
ment. What we do know is the per-
centage of the American public that’s
brain-dead these days which is at
least 52% and adding the yet to be
tallied percentage of the Republican
brain-dead equates to a scary
thought.
Patriotism? You’ve got us started.
The American who volunteers to fight
in Iraq and the American who protests
the war both express a truer patriot-
ism than the American who treats it as
a distant spectacle. You are who you
are, how do you like it? And finally, the
last 8 years is what we’re all going to
be hearing a lot of as our President
will have to have something eloquent
to say each time he attempts and fails

The Perils of
Making
a Buck

The most socialist leaning President
we’ve ever had is headed for the Oval
office. Another ex-lawyer has lied his
way to the top, duping more than half
the population into believeing that he
will change things. Convincing the
gullible that 95% of the population will
be much better off with his plans to tax
the incomes of the highest wage earn-
ers and spreading the wealth.
Definition: A capital gain is the prof-
it that results from investments into a
capital asset, such as stocks, bonds
or real estate, which exceeds the pur-
chase price. Key word being profit.
Beneath Obama's flowery rhetoric
lies a dangerous economic plan that
will most likely wreak yet more severe
havoc on our economy. In light of the
most recent “bailouts” to the tune of
over a trillion dollars, where do you
think he’ll get the money?
Obama says he is absolutely com-
mitted to almost doubling the capital
gains rate - something he will easily
accomplish with a Democrat
Congress. In the coming months -
when investors realize that Obama
will raise the cap gains rate - there will
likely be a stampede of asset sales as
investors rush to take their profits now
to avoid Obama's increased tax rates
next year. Makes sense.
But just in case anyone’s missed it,
we’re all in a sinking boat where “capi-
tol gains” aren’t what they used to be.
Is Obama planning to wait until it all
turns around? And the extra Social
Security tax? Hello? Everyday thou-
sands of people are losing their jobs.
Our President elect is experimenting
with our future and we have to doubt
he has the wherewithal to do so. He
has sold the majority on tax reform at
a time when tax revenues are plum-

Democrats get the money they plan to

Senator Barack Obama declared
recently that he wants to “reform our
tax code so that it rewards work and
not just wealth.” We think that is a
great goal if it means a simple tax sys-
tem with low marginal tax rates.
Unfortunately, a close inspection of
Obama’s proposals reveals some-
thing disquieting: he would raise mar-
ginal tax rates for many middle-
income taxpayers, a bad move for
anyone seeking to promote economic
growth.
In economics, according to
Wikipedia online encyclopedia, mar-
ginal tax rates are important because
they determine incentives to increase
income; at high marginal tax rates, the
individual has less incentive to earn
more. Public discussion of "high
taxes" often refers to overall tax rates
or “marginal” taxes.
Although Obama is offering a new
series of tax breaks, they undermine
rather than improve economic incen-
tives. First, whether or not you get
those breaks will depend on your
income. In Washington, taking away
tax breaks as families work harder to
earn more money is called a “phase-
out.” Economists have a different
name for it—they call it a tax.
Reducing a person’s tax credit as his
income goes up also reduces his
incentive to earn more income.
Second, Obama would make some
credits refundable for families with
credits bigger than their tax liability,
which would also have the nefarious
effect of raising marginal tax rates.
For example, consider a worker in the
10 percent bracket with $1,000 of tax
liability, before credits, who claims
$1,200 in credits. The tax impact of
earning an extra $100 depends on
whether the credit is refundable. If it’s
not refundable, there’s no tax penalty
on earning the extra $100 because
the worker’s tax liability stays at zero.
We seem likely
headed toward a

ing too much of the
fruits of your labor
for yourself.
But if the credit is refundable, earning
the extra money pushes the tax up
from negative $200 to negative
$190—that’s a 10 percent penalty on
earning income.
Senator Obama’s proposed “tax
cuts for the middle class” are actually
marginal rate hikes in disguise. If he’s
aware of this then our President is just
another glib conman. If he isn’t, then
he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
Doing the Math: Senator
Obama would raise the top individual
tax rate back to 39.6 percent, impose
an additional 2 to 4 percent tax on
earnings for some over the existing
Social Security wage cap, and bring
back the phase-out of the personal
exemption and certain itemized
deductions for higher-income taxpay-
ers. When added up, the top effective
marginal tax rate rises from 37.9 per-
cent to roughly 48 to 50 percent.
Note: These calculations work as
follows: (1) 37.9 percent equals the
current 35 percent top income tax rate
plus the current 2.9 percent Medicare
tax rate; and (2) 48 to 50 percent
equals Obama's 39.6 percent top
income tax rate plus the 2.9 percent
Medicare tax rate plus his additional
2-to-4 percent hike in the Social
Security tax rate, plus an additional
roughly 4.5 percent for the phase-out
of personal exemption and certain
itemized deductions.

And so the debate about taxes is
really a debate about the role that our
biggest earners play in our economy.
Increasingly, those who sit at the cen-
ter of the Democratic Party seem to
minimize that role. One theme of the
Democratic convention was that gov-
ernment works, and that apparently
applies especially to the economy.
And so op-ed columnists now tell us
that the real key to growth is the
Democratic model of using govern-
ment to drive the economy through
vehicles like research dollars
(although those research dollars
come from taxes on private earnings).
We seem likely headed, in other
words, toward a period of rule by
those who believe that it is govern-
ment which is the motor of the world,
and that it’s selfish to think about
keeping too much of the fruits of your
labor for yourself.
Barack Obama has generated much
of this year’s discussion with his plan
to raise taxes on those earning
$250,000 and up and reduce them on
middle and lower income families.
But as fascinating as the discussion
has become, we seem to be drifting
away from the important question of
what impact do taxes have on work
and productivity (and hence the econ-
omy), especially among our most
industrious and innovative citizens--
those whom Ayn Rand once said
powered the “motor of the world”?
Will the rich, the productive, the
inventive, buy into this? Or will they
see their ambition and learning and
invention as unappreciated and over-
taxed? Ultimately withdrawing some
of it at great cost to society. It will be
an interesting and revealing experi-
ment.

Believe what you will, that the
Messiah has arrived and every little
thing will be OK, or that preparing for
the worst now is the order of the day.
Regardless, times such as these tend
to bring the survival instinct a bit clos-
er to the surface. Unless you’re feel-
ing confident that all of this will work
itself out, it may be wise to aquaint
yourself with what history has taught
us.
The division between ideologies
hasn’t been this clearly defined since
Hitler took on the World. The oppos-
ing ideologies appear such that the
free market, aka laissez-faire, and a
Government controlled economy, aka
Market socialism, are going toe to toe.
With so much private Industry now
standing with their hands out, it looks
like the free market has collapsed and
thus lies the distinct division.
Socialism refers to a broad set of
economic theories of social organiza-
tion advocating state or collective
ownership and administration of the
means of production, distribution of
goods, and the creation of an egalitar-
ian society. Modern socialism originat-
ed in the late nineteenth-century
working class political movement.
Karl Marx posited that socialism
would be achieved via class struggle
and a proletarian revolution which
represents the transitional stage
between capitalism and communism.
The Scheme Of Things
But obviously, today’s Capitolists
have suddenly changed their minds.
They’ve given up. Socialism is win-
ning out.
Market socialism is a term used to
denote two different economic sys-
tem(s) based in socialism.The first
term relates to an economy directed
and guided by socialist planners on
either a local or state level, while the
second refers to a system of free
exchange with socialist organizations
being predominant. What we’re see-
ing today appears to be a culmination
of what began years ago with hand-
outs such as Welfare, food stamps
and Section 8 housing. Ergo the liber-
al.
Capitolists tend to believe that min-
imizing taxes decreases the chance
that the government would fund bad
programs as such and prevents citi-
zens from needing government
money because they have more of
their own. Ergo the Conservative.
Socialists mainly share the belief
that capitalism unfairly concentrates
power and wealth among a small seg-
ment of society that controls money
and creates an unequal society. While
this neither includes nor sits well with
the innovative and inspired man or
woman that sacrifices, chooses to
work 80 rather than 40 hours each
week and ultimately acquires a
degree of wealth the old fashioned
way, they are nevertheless consid-
ered a part of the problem.
While some are actually putting
blind faith in another Ex-lawyer, and
others are convinced the "Messiah"
has arrived and help is on the way,
there are a few that think stocking up
on beans, rice and bullets is a viable
option. Drastic, desperate, knee-jerk
reaction or not, it is nevertheless on
the minds of more than a few. We
have seen and talked to some of
these folks and we’re here to tell you
that we have neither lost our minds
nor become the creators of some dark
tale of death and destruction.
So how far will the economy slide
and what’s in store should it take a
few years to recover? Obviously, no
one really knows. For the time being,
those mindlessly expecting a
“Change” to kick in currently have no
worries. And those thinking beans,
rice and bullets are of course gearing
for something that hasn’t happened
yet. Meanwhile, there are those that
may be thinking about all the opportu-
nities that present themselves today.
The underground economy and the
black market are markets consisting
of all commerce on which applicable
taxes and/or regulations of trade are
being avoided. The terms are also
often known as the underdog, shadow
economy, black economy or parallel
economy.

of activities. It is generally smallest in
countries where economic freedom is
greatest, and becomes progressively
larger in those areas where corrup-
tion, regulation, or legal monopolies
restrict legitimate economic activity.

lies. This is sounding more familiar all

dangerous to deal with or may hardly
be available legally.
The underground economy should
not be confused with the black mar-
ket, which deals strictly with illicit or
illegal activities. A number of activities
in the underground economy do fall
into a gray area legally and morally
speaking, but many cash-based busi-
nesses are considered legitimate, or
at least work under the tacit approval
of the government itself. Black market
activities are almost always under the
control of organized crime or corrupt
governments.
But unless you are independently
wealthy, or have charity in the hole
somewhere, you most assuredly have
survival in mind these days which
comes closer to food, clothing and
shelter legal or otherwise. As every
industry in the Country is on the
precipice, it may be only a matter of
time before the underground econo-

Clinton's Chief of Staff. He presided
over the outrageous last minute par-
dons and his style is strictly inside-the-

was named as assistant to the presi-
dent for legislative affairs, the presi-
dent's top lobbyist on Capitol Hill. Ron
Klain, a former chief of staff for Vice
President Al Gore, was named to the
same post for Vice President-elect
Joe Biden.
Greg Craig, a lawyer who repre-
sented former President Bill Clinton
during his impeachment proceedings,
has been chosen as Obama's White
House counsel, Politico.com reported

Judging by the appointments to his
transition committee and leaks about
possible top staff and Cabinet choic-
es, Obama appears to be practicing
the politics of status quo pork. One
thing is for certain regarding our
President’s promises and that is the
Freedom of Choice Act.
Sen. Barack Obama became a co-
sponsor of the 2007 Senate version of
the bill (S. 1173). Responding to a
question regarding how he would pre-
serve reproductive rights in a speech
given to the Planned Parenthood
Action Fund on July 17, 2007, he
declared "The first thing I'd do, as
president, is sign the Freedom of
Choice Act. That's the first thing that
I'd do”.
For the folks unawares this “Act” will
overturn partial birth abortion bans,
scrap parental notification laws, elimi-
nate bans on taxpayer-funded abor-
tions -- that's what the Freedom of
Choice Act does. Illustrious editor
Franklin declares the partial birth
abortion is the single most brutal,
inhumane procedure today.
Flailing & Bailing
Another day, another bailout. Little
Joe thinks that all this bailout talk is
bringing the schemers out of the
woodwork. This time homeowners get
to benefit from mortgage-modification
programs, designed to stem the tide of
foreclosures by making it easier for
borrowers to stay current on their
loans.
But the latest plans from Fannie Mae
and Freddie Mac, joining banks such
as J.P. Morgan Chase and Citigroup,
hold plenty of risks.
Take investors in mortgage-backed
securities. Modifications to mortgage
holders' interest rates could leave
some MBS holders with reduced inter-
est payments. Forgiveness of princi-
pal, meanwhile, could lead to capital
losses.
A bigger worry could be that these
modification programs are too effec-
tive. In that case, "many current bor-
rowers will wave the white flag of sur-
render and also try to get a modifica-
tion," Rod Dubitsky, a senior strategist
for asset-backed securities at Credit
Suisse, wrote in a recent report.
The danger is that loan holders who
otherwise could meet their payments
would decide to fall behind to get their
cut of the bailout. That could unleash
a chain reaction that drives default
rates even higher.
That means another dose of moral
hazard. Federal officials stopped wor-
rying months ago about that for com-
panies, as they piled up bailout upon
bailout to keep the financial system
from collapsing. But it’s collapsing
anyway folks. Now officials risk inject-

them, humiliating Georgiana. The
Duchess came to terms with the
agreement by taking a lover of her
own, Charles Grey, an old family
friend who later became England's
prime minister. However, the Duke
did not agree that what's good for the
goose is good for the gander. He
became enraged by Georgiana's
affair and effectively put an end to it
by threatening to take her children
away from her and ruin Charles' polit-
ical career if she did not end the rela-
tionship. She capitulated by breaking
off the affair, but not without announc-
ing to the duke that she was pregnant
with her lover's child. Her forthright-
ness was further punished by the
duke, who had the baby taken away
from her.
The movie is solid, benefiting from
the extensive research used by
author Amanda Foreman for her best-
selling 1998 biography of Georgiana,
the book on which the film is based.
It's a sad story about a woman who
was the most popular figure in her
country, except in her own home.
Watching this movie was a strange
experience. Hours after seeing it, I
was glad I did, although sitting
through it was not very enjoyable.
Throughout the film, I kept wondering
what the movie's point was and why
the critics loved it so much. Critics
across the board have given it four or
five stars, praising it as a funny, uplift-
ing movie. I kept waiting to laugh or
be uplifted, but that didn't happen
often enough. Most of the funny
scenes were not very funny, and the
good feelings imbued by the movie
didn't come until hours after it ended.
The indie film set in London focus-
es on a short period in the life of
Poppy (Sally Hawkins), a 30-year-old
primary school teacher with an irre-
pressible spirit. One critic describes
her as "occasionally annoying." That
is an understatement. The hyperki-
netic Poppy is extremely annoying for
most of the movie. On top of that,
there is virtually no plot and the lan-
guage is hard to understand. Not
only are the fast-speaking Cockney
accents confusing; the mannerisms
and expressions are hard to relate to.
It's hard to imagine an American audi-
ence really appreciating this movie,
despite what the critics say.

There were some uncomfortable
moments last month when the CEOs
of Ford,General Motors and Chrysler
trooped to Capitol Hill to beg
Congress for money to stay in busi-
ness. One of those moments
occurred when it was revealed that
the executives had each arrived on
their companies' private jets. They
didn't even think about jet-pooling to
save a few bucks, much less flying
commercial. Another occurred when it
became clear than none had brought
with them a plan for how they would

Venison Chop with Berry Sauce
This recipe makes the most of the
classic combination of game meat
and slightly tart red berries. It's novel,
it's lower in fat than beef or lamb, and
it makes a great match with a Rhône
red.
Venison Chop with Berry Sauce
Nose
Refers to the aroma or
bouquet of a wine.
Off-Dry:
Term used to describe a
slightly sweet wine.
• 4 venison double chops, about 2
pounds
• Marinade (recipe follows)
• 4 Roma tomatoes, chopped
• 2 tablespoons dried currants
• 1 cup fresh or frozen huckleberries
(or other berries)
• 2 cups veal broth (or 1 cup beef
broth plus 1 cup chicken broth)
• 2 tablespoons fruity olive oil
• Salt and freshly ground pepper
Marinade
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 rib celery, chopped
• 1 small carrot, chopped
• 1 shallot, chopped
• 1 clove garlic, chopped
• 2 cups dry red wine
• 1 tablespoon peppercorns, cracked
• 2 or 3 sprigs thyme or 1 large sprig
sage
• 1 bay leaf
1. Trim the venison chops, removing
the bones to make medallions.
Immerse them in the marinade in a
glass, plastic or stainless-steel con-
tainer just large enough to hold them.
Cover the container and refrigerate
the medallions overnight. Reserve
the bones.
2. The next day, brown the bones for
15 to 20 minutes in a skillet filmed
with oil, or brush them with oil and
bake them at 475° F for 30 minutes.

3. Remove the medallions from the
marinade and set them aside in the
refrigerator.
4. Transfer the marinade to a
saucepan. Add the browned bones,
the tomatoes, 1 tablespoon of the cur-
rants and all but 1 tablespoon of the
berries. Boil gently until the mixture
reduces in volume to 1 cup, about 20
minutes. Add the broth and continue
boiling gently until the mixture
reduces again to 1 cup. Strain this
mixture through a fine sieve and
return it to a clean saucepan. Add the
remaining tablespoon of currants and
the berries. Simmer for 2 to 3 min-
utes. Taste for seasoning. Keep the
sauce warm while you cook the veni-
son.
5. Heat the olive oil in a skillet large
enough to accommodate the venison.
Over high heat, brown the medallions
3 to 4 minutes on each side, season-
ing them with salt and pepper to taste.

skillet to paper towels to rest for 2

6. Serve the medallions with the
sauce and fresh noodles tossed with
olive oil, salt and pepper.Serves 4.
Marinade
In a small saucepan, heat the olive
oil and brown the celery, carrot, shal-
lot and garlic for 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in
the remaining ingredients. Simmer
the mixture for 10 minutes. Let it cool.

has become more important than

There may be greater conse-
quences to short-changing yourself
on sleep than falling asleep at meet-
ings. According to a report in the
November issue of Archives of
Internal Medicine, sleeping less than
seven and a half hours per day may
be associated with future risk of heart
disease. In addition, a combination of
little sleep and overnight-elevated
blood pressure appears to be linked
to an increased risk of the disease.
On the other hand, loading up on
potassium can apparently help keep
your blood pressure in check.
Meanwhile, they urge efforts to
increase the amount of potassium in
the diet, as well as lowering sodium.
"High-potassium foods include fruits
such as bananas and citrus fruits and
vegetables," says Dr, Hedayati.
"Consuming a larger amount of these
foods in the diet may lower blood
pressure."

Pinot Noir (red)
Pinot Noir is the classic grape of red burgundy, whose greatest wines
are concentrated in the east and south-east-facing limestone hills of
Burgundy's Côte d'Or. This thin-skinned grape is a notoriously tem-
peramental variety, which has proved difficult to grow in certain cli-
mates and soils. There's no other grape like Pinot Noir with its won-
derfully heady perfumes, and thrillingly pure, sweet, red berry flavours
of raspberry, loganberry, mulberry, cherry and strawberry. It takes well
to French oak and, in bottle, develops truffley and gamey undertones.
Along with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir is one of the
major grape varities in Champagne, and plantings of Pinot in the region
are even more extensive than those in Burgundy itself. Despite its fick-
le nature, it is a tribute to its desirability among consumers and pro-
ducers and it has inspired growers all over Europe and the New World.

Triple Chocolate Cake

Most "doctored" boxed mix chocolate cake recipes just
don't deliver the rich and decadent results that the
made-from-scratch cakes do. This triple chocolate
cake is so delicious you won't feel the least bit guilty for
using such an easy recipe.
Yields 10 Slices of Triple Chocolate Cake
• Prep Time: 10 minutes • Cook Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients:

* 1 (18-ounce) box devil's food chocolate cake mix

* 1 (6-ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
* 1 cup sour cream
* 1 cup vegetable oil
* 4 large eggs, beaten
* 1/2 cup warm water
* 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
* powdered sugar, as needed

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a mixing bowl, use a whisk to stir together the chocolate cake mix, pud-
ding mix, sour cream, oil, eggs and water. Mix in chocolate chips and pour
the batter into a greased 12-cup bundt pan. Bake for 50 minutes or until an
inserted toothpick comes out clean. Dust the cake with powdered sugar.

Bio:
John Hooker
1917–2001
Hooker was born on August 22,
1917 in Coahoma County near
Clarksdale, Mississippi, the youngest
of the eleven children of William
Hooker (1871–1923), a sharecropper
and a Baptist preacher, and Minnie
Ramsey (1875–?). Hooker and his
siblings were home-schooled. They
were permitted to listen only to reli-
gious songs, with his earliest musical
exposure being the spirituals sung in
church. In 1921, his parents separat-
ed. The next year, his mother married
William Moore, a blues singer who
provided John's first introduction to
the guitar (and whom John would
later credit for his distinctive playing
style).
Hooker's recording career began in
1948 when his agent placed a demo
disc, made by Hooker, with the Bihari
brothers, owners of the Modern
Records label. The company initially
released an up-tempo number,
"Boogie Chillen", which became
Hooker's first hit single. Though they
were not songwriters, the Biharis
often claimed co-authorship of songs
that appeared on their labels, thus
securing songwriting royalties for
themselves, in addition to their
streams of income.
Sometimes these songs were older
tunes renamed (B.B.King's "Rock Me
Baby"), anonymous jams ("B.B.'s
Boogie") or songs by employees
(bandleader Vince Weaver). The
Biharis used a number of pseudo-
nyms for songwriting credits: Jules
was credited as Jules Taub; Joe as
Joe Josea; and Sam as Sam Ling.
One song by John Lee Hooker,
"Down Child" is solely credited to
"Taub", with Hooker receiving no
credit for the song whatsoever.
Another, "Turn Over a New Leaf" is
credited to Hooker and "Ling".

with an angel". He was survived by
eight children, nineteen grandchil-
dren, numerous great-grandchildren
and a nephew.
