Is Negative Number a Rational Number

Is Negative Number a Rational Number In a number system we have dealt with natural numbers which are also called counting numbers, The series of numbers 1, 2, 3, which are used to count the existence of anything are called natural numbers. Whole numbers, which include 0 (zero) followed the series of natural numbers which are used to measure the units like weight, speed, height etc . So they are also called Measuring numbers. So, the series 0, 1, 2, .. are called whole numbers The series of numbers which have Natural numbers, 0 and the negatives of natural numbers are called Integers. Integers are from the range -.. -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3, + Now, the question arises that are the Negative numbers a rational numbers. For this we first look at a glance that what are rational numbers.

All numbers which can be expressed in form of p/q, where both p and q are integers such that q 0 belong to the family of rational numbers. Some examples of rational numbers are -3/4, 5/9, 2/-6 etc. If we take any negative number say -6, we can also write it as -6/1. Comparing -6/1 with the rational number, we observe that it is also written in form of p/q, where p= -6 and q=1. Further we see that q 0. We also notice that all the properties of integers i.e. addition and multiplication closure, commutative property, associative property also satisfy for the rational numbers. Moreover, multiplicative and additive inverse also exists for both negative integers and Rational numbers. We also check that there exists a number 0, which when added with either negative integer or rational numbers will not change the number, and if multiplied with it, will result to zero (0). Thus we conclude that every negative number is a Rational Number. Positive Rational Numbers Positive rational numbers can be expressed as the ratio 'p/q' where, 'p' and 'q' are both positive integers. Any positive rational number can be expressed as a sum of distinct reciprocals of positive integers like: 3/5 = 1/3+2/6+1/18. A positive rational number has infinitely many different such representations called Egyptian fractions. A rational number is simply a number that can be expressed as a fraction , with integer numerator and denominator such a number can be positive, negative, zero.

-2.6 is a rational number which can be written-26/10. 3.26 is a rational number which can be written 326/100. In the above mentioned examples, the first example shows the negative value and the other shows the positive value. So, second one is positive rational number. This is all about Positive Rational numbers. Some more examples of positive rational number is :4, , 6 There are numbers you can possibly get when you divide one positive whole number by another one, or one negative whole number by another one. Negative Rational Numbers The numbers which are written in form of a/b where a and b are integers such that b0 all comes in the family of Rational Numbers. Positive Rational Numbers are those which have both numerators and denominators as positive or negative. Example: 5/7, 6/5 or (-3/-4) are positive rational numbers. Negative Rational Numbers are the numbers which have either numerator or denominator as negative. Example: -3/7, -5/8 0r 5/-8 are negative rational numbers. Negative rational number must have at least one negative value that can either be numerator or denominator.

Properties of Rational Numbers The rational numbers are closed under addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by nonzero rational numbers. The properties are called closure properties of rational numbers. If 'm' and 'n' are two rational numbers then the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of these rational numbers is also a rational number, then these numbers satisfy the closure law. Lets take an example of addition which satisfies the closure properties, 3+4=7 shows the closure property of real number addition because when we add the real numbers to other real numbers the result is also real. This condition is necessary for all other operations like subtraction, multiplication and division.
