INTRODUCTION TO OUTLETS

An outlet store or factory outlet is a retail store in which manufacturers sell their stock directly to the public through their own branded stores. Traditionally, a factory outlet was a store attached to a factory or warehouse. Often these stores are grouped together in outlet malls. Since its origination, outlets have seen variation in project size and an industry reorganization in the early 1990s which resulted in many smaller outlets going dark. As newer outlets continue their popularity, clear differences between new well designed centers and traditional retail centers are becoming harder and harder to differentiate.

a company's office that deals with customers in a particular region or country . Department stores are those that sell just about anything. Breaking down this category even farther, this is the discount department store, like Wal-Mart, and the "anchor" discount store like Macy's. These are the stores that will have the most employees and will often feature managers in every department. Specialty stores sell one specific category of items. It is like taking a single department from a department store and expanding it into something larger with more product choices. Within a specialty store, there may be more specialized departments. For example, in an electronics store, you may find departments for televisions, cameras, music, and so forth or in a pet store, you may find departments for toys, reptiles, bedding, et cetera. Working for a retail sporting goods store is highly desirable for people who love athletics. Used goods stores usually have a number of different kinds of products, but the emphasis here is that the items have been previously owneg and are much less expensive. Online stores may or may not have a brick-and-mortar counterpart. However, they still need employees. Although they may not need cashiers, they do need people to ready orders as well as deal with technical problems and respond to customer questions via email. Grocery stores: Grocery stores are technicaly a subdivision of specialty stores, but they are the most common and often have the most complex employee make-up.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF OUTLETS


RETAIL OUTLET.
Retail marketing has undergone a sea change in the last couple of years. In a market where brands are proliferating, shelf space getting rare and the customers multiplying, it has become imperative to assess whether the sales team and distribution network cover all the outlets in the city in an effective manner. Retail industry is growing at fastest rate with increased number of challenges faced by retail. It has become increasingly difficult to adapt to changing business scenarios for retailers who are always looking for

new ways to increase profitability. Frauds, including vendor frauds, thefts, shoplifting and inaccuracy in supervision and administration are the challenges that are difficult to handle. Although the challenges of retail are unique, they can be addressed with the right technology that identifies the problems and offers a holistic solution.

SPECIALITY STORE.
The specialty stores have a limited product line. It is a final selling terminal of a company with a sound sales output. Specialty stores are located individually as well as in shopping malls or other business terminals.

DEPARTMENTAL STORE.
The departmental stores have several product lines as household appliances, consumer electronics, home care products etc. These stores are located usually near resisdential areas or busy markets where they are easily approachable for the consumers. Most department stores carry at least some apparels and a few also carry equipments.

SUPERMARKETS.
Super markets are large than above ones and provide low cost facility to the consumers. They opt a very high volume and are usually self service stores. They are designed to meet the total needs for food and other household products.

CONVENIENCE STORE.
These are the small stores in resisdential areas, often open 24/7. They have a limited line of products with a high turnover. They usually sell convenient products.

DISCOUNT STORE.
These stores are standard or speciality merchandise with low price. They have a very low margin and these stores have also a high volume. The discount offered by these stores is depandant upon the marketing and pricing strategy of the company. They carry selected goods items at lower price points. Many neighborhood full-line discount stores have been unable to compete with them and get closed down.

OFF-PRICE RETAIL OUTLETS.


These outlets sell mostly leftover goods or overruns. These consist of irregular merchandise at less than retail price. The off-price retail outlets are independent as factory outlets.

SUPERSTORES.
These involve huge selling spaces mainly for routinely purchased food and household items. Moreover they can provide plus services like laundry, dry cleaning, electronic billing of telephones, electricity etc. They sometimes comprise of supermarket, discount store and warehouse retailing.

Retail Outlets
Retailers have tried to divide up the market to their best advantage. Some hope to be profitable through high margins, others through high volume. Most focus on offering consumers one or two of the following: depth and breadth of selection, innovative products, quality service, or low price.

SPECIALTY STORES
One-Sport Specialty Shops. These are very niche specific stores. They try to carry exclusive product lines, have knowledgeable sales staff, and offer quality service. Examples: skateboard shops, in-line skate shops, cycling shops. Multi-Sport Specialty Shops. These still serve niches, but are not as narrowly defined. Often they start out as one-sport specialty shops and then broaden their product lines. They usually expand for one of two reasons: to generate income 12 months of the year by serving both cold weather and warm weather sports or because their customer base has a multi-sport orientation. For example, REI, which now has a chain of stores across the country, focuses on five sports: camping, climbing, cycling, paddling, and skiing. Other examples: snowboard/skateboard shops, ski/mountain biking shops, cross-country skiing/camping shops. Pro Shops. The primary difference between these and the other specialty shops is location. Pro shops tend to be connected to sports facilities (e.g., golf courses, tennis clubs, ice rinks). Generally the shops are small and carry relatively few product lines. Rental Shops. These are another source of product sales for manufacturers. Rental shops buy equipment to rent out and also sell accessory items.

FULL-LINE GOODS STORES


Local Goods Stores. These used to be the primary outlet for sporting goods. They met their communities' basic sports needs (e.g. recreational equipment, hunting and fishing supplies, family camping equipment). Competition from larger sporting goods stores and discounters have forced many of them to close. Regional Chains. Sometimes one-store operations grew into chains. Often regional chains were small. An example is DSG Sports, a six-store chain in North Carolina. But some grew quite large. For example, during the 80 years that Herman's existed, it expanded into a 117-store East Coast chain (Massachusetts to Virginia). In 1996 it went bankrupt. Big Box Stores. These are super stores (also known as "category killers"): huge stores carrying thousands of items. They have changed the nature of sports retailing in recent years. Some, such as The Sports Authority, carry a full range of sporting goods. Others, such as Just For Feet, primarily carry athletic shoes. Resale Shops. These stores sell used sports equipment, but also some new items, particularly accessories and replacement products like inline skate wheels. Said Charlie Kanan, president of Play It Again Sports (a franchise operation that has nearly 700 stores in the U.S., plus stores in Canada and Europe), "...we are that small neighborhood specialty store that specializes in buying, selling, trading and consigning." (5) The product mix in Play It Again Sports is approximately 60% new and 40% used.

Hardware Stores. In some areas hardware stores stock selected sporting goods items such as camping, hunting, and fishing supplies.

Footwear Stores. These are athletic shoe specialty stores usually found in malls. Examples: Foot Locker, RACKS, etc

Licensing Stores. Another common mall store, specializing in apparel with team logos. They are also known as "fan shops." MANUFACTURER OUTLETS Chains. Some manufacturers/distributors have established chains of retail stores which sell their own brands and little else. Examples: The North Face, Eddie Bauer. Concept Stores. Some manufacturers set up "theme park" stores to display their products in an exciting and entertaining setting. The purpose of these stores has more to do with publicity and promotion than high volume sales. Example: NikeTown. Outlets. Many manufactures set up outlet stores to dispose of overstocks and flawed merchandise. These may be near their factories or in outlet centers (which are usually located in areas at least half an hour away from metropolitan shopping malls).

Department Stores. This usually involves mail order catalogs. But some manufacturers and distributors are also selling directly to the public through magazine ads, infomercials, cable TV shopping networks, and the Internet.

The theme it follows is can be the reason to attract for the viewers. The various outlets and retail stores are discussed above with the display system they follow.
