Goals
By the end of this week, you should be able to recognise: The additive identity of a Vector Additive inverse Vectors in 2D Multiply Vectors by a Scalar value
Theoretical Components
1. Look at the websites on Vectors: http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/vectoraddition.html http://www.mathwarehouse.com/vectors/resul tant-vector.php Make note of the fact that you can add vectors to get a resultant vector. 2. Adding a negative Vector http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/vectorsubtraction.html 3. Multiply a Vector by a scalar: http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/multiplica tion-vector.html 4. Youtube video on Vectors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pimr9I92GZ Y
Practical Components
1. Work on exercise 1a and 1b from the problem sheets in the Resource folder
Quiz
Marta was convinced that there had to be some way to graph y = log2 x on her graphing calculator. She typed in y = log(2x ) and hit EXE. It WORKED! Marta yelled in triumph. Whaaaaat? said Celeste. I think y = log2 x and y = log(2x ) are totally different, and I bet we can prove it by converting both of them to exponential form. Yeah, I think youre wrong, Marta, said Sophia. I think we can prove y = log2 x and y x = log(2 ) are totally different by looking at the graphs. a). Show that y = log2 x and y = log(2x ) are different by sketching the graph of y = log2 x using what you learned in previous lessons. Then sketch what your grapher shows to be the graph of y = log(2x ) . b. Now show that they are different by converting both of them to exponential form.

When we defined the i & j vector notation, we talked about having Scalar multiples of a unit vector in the x and y directions. What are the possible types of numbers that these Scalar values can be? In other words, what are the possibilities of types of numbers for all i, j and scalar values?
Quiz Forum
Every even week there is a quiz, they contribute to 10% of your final grade. (hyperlink to quiz here on on the button) Remember the participation now counts toward your attendance. Discuss how some examples that you have found in your research that use Vectors.

Maths Joke: The functions are sitting in a bar, chatting (how fast they go to zero at infinity etc.). Suddenly, one cries "Beware! Derivation is coming!" All immediately hide themselves under the tables, only the exponential sits calmly on the chair. The derivation comes in, sees a function and says "Hey, you don't fear me?" "No, I am e to x", says the exponential self-confidently. "Well" replies the derivation "but who says I differentiate along x?"
