"Call to Everyone"
A Cell Phone Art Show
April 2 - 30, 2012
Says JoAnne Wilcox, curator of the exhibit, “I envisioned a collection of photos as far
away as technology could reach. The result is an exhibition that blends cell phone
photos printed on obsolete card catalog and due date cards from public libraries.”
Photos from all over the world will be presented in old card catalog drawers.
The "call" went out in January for submissions. Participants were encouraged to
visit their local libraries and ask for old catalog and due date cards on which they
would mesh their cell phone images with the catalog descriptions and random
notations left behind. Says Wilcox, “People suddenly saw the cards as more than
descriptions of books and journals, they became inspiration for their own messages,
for bits of landscape and frozen moments of their lives that they had stored in their
phone’s camera.”
Sharon Lovett-Graff, Branch Manager of Mitchell Library says “ JoAnne Wilcox's cell
phone photography project has been the buzz around the New Haven Free Public
Library, not only for library customers but for the staff as well. The idea of reusing
old library card catalog and date due cards for printing out photographs is a great
way to express share her passion for libraries, their history and photography.
