Love the greatest fruit of spirit

Oyelami B O

G reetings brethren, my sisters and brothers in Christ. The Feast of love is around in our mist again another milestone in the body of Christ. Love as we all know is one of the eight “fruit of spirit” as Galatians 5:22-23 pointed out. Paul in his Epistles to the

Corinthians Church in 1 Corinthians 13:13 pinpointed Love to be the greatest of the eight fruit of spirit .In fact, we can say no mistake is committed if love is described as fruit containing seeds- the other seven fruit of spirit.

Love is a topic every thirsty mind seeks to have sipped of. There are several kinds of love we will discuss two kinds that is, love that exists between man to man especially opposite sex. The other one is the bond of love between God and man with Jesus Christ as rendezvous as found in John 3:16.

The question is what is love? Our answer will be given in two ways, one Biblical and other scientific in nature. The term love in science in her glory says “it is physio-chemical process which produces a warm sensation chemically in human beingsThis scientific definition is not convincing to me. I find it hard to be belief it, for example; one may ask what kind of physical process is responsible for envy, hatred and enjoyment? or perhaps the same process?

In English there is only one word for Love, whereas, in Greek there are seven. The New Testament mentioned only two the “Phila” and “Agape”. Phila is the affection or fondness for another as friendship such as having soft sportfor each other especially opposite sex. This kind of love is limited and inconsistent.

Agape is God‟s perfect love, unlimited love Christ like love in its highest manifestation in man and it comes as a result spirit of God in man. Eros is physical or sensual love for instance someone loves football or drinking wine.

John Benton says “love is the reflection of characters of God who made the universe” When we act and care for other out of love, there is a real sense in which our actions are coming close to God .Love he concluded „is God‟s pattern for society‟ Love is none other than the essence of the maker‟s instruction!” Agape is self-sacrificing gives rise to phile and R.H. Baxter sees love as the essence of the divine author of life God in man that permeates the whole life.

Love from all that are discussed above is not having sex even though it is necessary for procreation which God has ordained. But obedient to His word and reflecting His character to other who need assistance and need some to care for them as God does to mankind. Love It is not an instrument for brothers to set trap for sisters to have premarital sex or extramarital sex with then; break their hearts and dump them later. Love should not be a tool sisters should employ in exploiting brothers to make money or sell their bodies to shareholders in their sin company.

Sometimes ago, a youth Corper was asked to give an evaluative account of the success of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) scheme in Nigeria. He said, if NYSC if successful it is the area of bring male and female folks together for wedlock. There is no doubt the young Corper thought about phila love.

I had an encounter with a fellow corper at the Yilpkata orientation camp in Ilorin on 16 December 1988.We spent the night discussing love, the phila to be specific. According to him love is utopia, abstract nonexistent phenomenon. In his own view the corner stone of definition of love are: it must not be base on material value of the parties; never on beauty of physical appearance and personality profile. It must not fade away nor die. Hence he concluded “love does not exist because no couple falls into love without at least of the qualities or variables stated above not coming into play.

Furthermore, in my response I told him love exists it dwells in the hearts. It is the spirit of God who covertly manifests it out. There got to be starting point for a relation but we must always return to God to help us to make genuine and good Love relationships. My advised to youth is to take advice from men of God and read the word of God concerning marriage.

Let us prayerfully open our Bible to 1 Corinthians 13:1-13:

The Bible talks of Love being greater than Faith, a key to the Bible and without it we receive nothing. In Romans 5:2, we are told “….by Faith we shall assess into glory” .This love spoken of being greater than knowledge, a martyrdom of trust for Jesus. Yet Paul says Christians must desire it .In the passage, love was said to be the greater than prophesy and the gift of tongue. Yet the same Paul says “But he that prophesied speaketh unto men to edification and exhortation and comfort. But he who speaketh in an unknown tongue edified himself, but he that prophesied edifies the Church” (1 Corinthians 13:3-4).

There is no doubt Paul was speaking of Agape love not a kind of human love (Phila) which is limited and inconstitient.God‟s love is shown through the birth, life and death of our Lord Jesus .God‟s love to man comes to us as a result of salvation. The baptism by Holy Spirit causes a greater outflow of God‟s Love, as long as the person is abiding in Christ and working in the Spirit.

Love in the New Testament was said to edify us spiritually, knowledge puff-off but love edifies. We must love God first (Deuteronomy 6:5) and then one another as our Lord Jesus said “Love your neighbour as yourself” this the golden rule. Peter says “Brethren, see that ye love one another with pure heart fervently” (1 Peter 1:22 KJV).Brother love your sister and sister love your brother. Love your enemy .There is nothing greater than love .God loves us by give us His only son, Jesus Christ. He gives us breath of life, the rain, the sun and the moon for our continuous survival.

The love between a brother and a sister must not be like that of fowl and butcher neither must it be like that of a banker to her customers. The banker is always interested in money!
