The internet started as a pet-project of the defence-Advanced research

project agency (DARPA) to develop an American Defence Network. This

Network was called advanced research project agency (ARPANET). The
internet is an internal network of computers linked up to exchange
information. Internet is a contraction of international and network. Which is
a large set of computer networks that communicate with each other; often
over telephone lines. This international network consists of computers
permanently joined together through high speed connections. Thus there are
(LAN & WAN) for dispersal of connected computers.

WAN: - wide area network is a network in which computers & devices

connected to the networks are geographically far apart from one another.
Since the computers are far apart, connections are done with telephone
lines, satellite transmission dishes & micro waves. Transmission facilities are
used to link computers. Some of the devices are:- modulators &
Demodulators (MODEMS) and multiplexers MODEMS are devices for
converting data or information into a form for transmission through
communication lines used in computer networks (modulator aspect) and also
reconverting transmitted signals from transmissible forms to computer
understandable forms (demodulator aspect). Multiplexer stream lines
information from the communication device. It joins together the signals &
sends them to the CPU. Many wide area networks (WAN) can be linked
together to obtain an inter-network of networks. Also a single computer or
local area network (LAN) can be linked to this inter-network of networks
today, inter-network of networks have webbed the whole world into a global
communication village and is termed Internet. By this companies,
organizations, individuals, schools etc can share information across the
world. Recent technology developments show that with an internet decoder
called net box, one can access the internet through ordinary television sets.

The linking of devices, computers, LANS, WANS to obtain internet work of

networks could be by the use of three devices / mechanisms: - Bridge,
Router, Gateway
Bridge: inter-connects networks of same transmission protocol through same
medium & close network & devices.
Router: has higher performance they inter-connect network of different
transmission media & could be far apart geographically.
Gateway: has the greatest capabilities, it’s able to do the work of router and
can convert protocols to suite inter-connected networks differing protocols.
With gate way, different LANS, WANS or a mixture LANS & WANS can be
inter-connected to different computer systems and devices.
