This assignment will give a chance to the students to communicate and exchange the opinion or view with other person in society, which come from variety of field. Therefore, all the objectives of the report writing, will give the benefit to the students in order to be more effective and more proactive in their work. All the students need to take the advantage by doing this assignment, in order to make a good preparation, to face more difficult work in the future. The person that I choose, to be my respondent is Mr. Zulkifli Bin Abllah, 30 years old from Pasir Mas, Kelantan. He is now working as a Senior Magistrate for the district of Tanjung Malin and Slim River. As a magistrate in Tanjung Malim and Slim River, he had a lot of stories and experiences since he started his work in 2001. His stories and experience is really interesting that can be shared with our group, especially the life of one of the important person in these two particular districts.

The main reason why we choose Mr. Zulkifli as our respondent is because we want to know more about his life, work, people around him and many other things. He also told us about his future plan, his family and also about the benefit that he gets while working as a Magistrate. We actually do not face any problems during the interview process. We have arranged the interview about a week before the date. But, because of the interviewee, Mr.Zulkifli Abllah was very busy and got a lot of cases to settle, so the interview had been postponed to 14 February at 12.00 p.m. We arrived at the court 15 minutes earlier. Mr. Zulkifli got work to do at that time and we have to wait about 30 minutes. The staff there was so kind and friendly. We have been serve tea while waiting for Mr. Zulkifli and have a little chat with the staff. About 12.15 p.m, we have been asked to go to Mr. Zulkiflis room. We have been greeting with nice welcome smile from Mr. Zulkifli, who is so friendly although he was very busy at that time. The interview process work smoothly and we have such an informal talk because we tried very hard to make the interview and the situation not so formal and straight forward. This can decrease our nervous and make our interviewee feel relax and not depress. He had answered all the questions clearly and sometime make some joke and make the situation not too formal. The interview process only took about 30 minutes because he got to prepare for a case at 1.00 p.m. We left the room at 12.45 p.m and before we left Mr. Zulkifli said, we can find him anytime to get any information. We thank him a lot for the cooperation and left In addition, Mr. Zulkifli can be one of the examples of the successful person in a young age. He is just 30 years old but he already has a comfortable life and holding a big department. So, we can take him as our idol and motivation in gaining a good life. Therefore, we can know the detail of the experience from Mr. Zulkifli, who wants to be the judge, as his dream and ambition, but he has to go through step by step in order to achieve that. By knowing him, we have already motivated to be successful like him.

THE REPORT 3.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE INTERVIEWS CAREER

Mr.Zulkifli Abllah is a magistrate at Court Magistrate in Tanjung Malim, Perak. He was posted in Tanjung Malim since 2001 and had settled many cases that happened around Tanjung Malim, Slim River and also any nearest area. He was a very down to earth person and so generous with smile. He choose this career because he believe if all his seniors and all the judges in Malaysia can be a good judges and succeed in their life he also can do so. He makes those people as his idol to become a magistrate. He comes from a lower income family where he has no close person that can be his idol and encourage him, so he makes his friends who already have been given the mandate to be a magistrate. A magistrate is a judicial officer of the District Court who handles certain criminal and civil matters. In criminal cases, a magistrate issues warrants and sets bail. A magistrate may also accept guilty pleas and payments of fines and costs for traffic violations and minor misdemeanors and, in some counties, may conduct trials in certain worthless check cases. In civil cases, the magistrate presides over small claims court. The mission of the Magistrate is to protect and preserve the rights and liberties of all of the people, as guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States and North Carolina, by providing a fair, independent and accessible forum the just, timely and economical resolution of their legal affairs According to Mr. Zulkifli, the primary function as a magistrate is to uphold the justice which is giving the right thing to the right place and to the right person. So for him, when anybody refuses to follow the rules or contravene and break any regulations, they will have to face the magistrate and the consequence. The main duty is to make sure the law and order in that particular place were observe by the unit of the society. So basically any dispute or differences and unbecoming problem, people have to settle it down. So the function of the magistrate of the 3rd person as the 3rd party is to mediate or to reconcile the problem arises among the subject or among the people. For him magistrate is the guardian of the law and magistrate can punish guilty people with the power that they have. In his career, he has to face much kind of people. But those things are the sweet memories for him. For the duty that he carried, he was so happy when people that he had punished come to see him and thank him because they have been a good person after the punishment. He said, been a magistrate, everybody will salute him.

It is not easy to achieve fame, victory, triumph or success because it demands a lot of sacrifices in life. We cannot attain the success if we are not strong enough in facing the challenge and trial. Mr. Zulkifli b. Abllah, along his journey in life, he was not having many difficulties because his parents naturally see the education as a priority in continuing a successful life. However, he is not from a wealthy family. That is how he motivates his self to struggle and attempt earnestly in grabbing the triumph and change the economic level of their family. To him, he cannot forget every single experience that he faced because it teaches him to be more open minded. He jots every memory that he been through along his life in his diary. He told us the experience where he being respect and praise by others because of his good did. He said that we have to learn doing good things to other instead of waiting others to do a good thing on us. To him, we dont have to be afraid in setting up the truth and the justice as well. The experience is the only teacher that can teach us improving ourselves in facing the challenges in life. He said that we have to share our opinion and our general knowledge in order to enrich our existing knowledge and views. There are so many ways we can do to enhance our knowledge to make sure we are always up to date with all of the latest information. Moreover, he said as a magistrate he has to refill latest news to his mind. He state that in our life we have to set goals or objectives. It is important for us to ensure our direction in life is not diverting from the real target. In the same time, we have to have a succeeded idol as an example and benchmark for us to be success in everything we do. We have to follow their action and the way how they did something to gain the victory. Whatever obstacles come we have to be strong and try to overcome it as long as we can. He reminds us not to be snobbish but be a down to earth person. We dont have to dash our goals or dreams avariciously because a mistake might occur and it may obstruct us from achieving it. To him, we have to do it step by step so the success will remain forever.

Me : mm..Are you married Sir?

Mr. Zulkifli : ooo..Yes..My father already married.. Me : Hahaha (laughing)

Mr. Zulkifli : But Im very unlucky one because Im..Im still single Me : What about your siblings?..Is there..aa..any successful siblings like you?

10

Mr. Zulkifli : Yes..I have 8..I think..I am the second..aa..half of my siblings is having a university study now..two of us already graduate..I have one my sister..younger sister..I think a final sem or practical at..in the UPSI..I think she took mathematic I think..now still in practice..having a practical period in K..Ipoh..Ipoh..sorry..so my brother graduate from..UUM..so now hes working with the hypermarket as a management post and the rest..I have..only 3 of us still schooling..and the last or the youngest..I think form 4..thats all..so I think basically half of us already success and half of us still struggling for the success. Me : Do you still have parents?

Mr. Zulkifli : Yes..my..my.my..Both of..my parents still alive. Me : mm..I will ask about your education..Just now you have..aa..told us just a bit about your education. So, can you tell us a bit more..aa..specific about your..aa..Which secondary school did yo go to..did..aa..you go to? Me : Yeah..my secondary..my primary school in hometown, Pasir Mas..and then later on..basically even..Im..I..I would say that..I study at the religious school actually..because some..somebody will be surprise I am able to be a magistrate because Im the only..the only..one..but the rest could be become an ustaz right?..I dont like to be ustaz even I can speak English or I can speak Arabic a little bit..because after UPSR I think..I took UPSR..I get..I achieve a quite good I think..but..because my brother..my big brother and my sister..they are..they..they were offered as a boarding school..I think as a Sekolah Menengah Sains..but for me, my father asked me to attend the religious school..so for..by hook or by crook I have to follow because I still nave at that particular time..so I attending the religious school at the Pasir Mas..Maahad Pasir Mas now..I think 1990..yes, 1990..I was form 1..and after 5 years, so I decided that I cannot go on to be an ustaz..but I have..at

11

least I satisfied my father ambition to be..a little bit religious I think..so I took Arabic course or whatever so..even I..have a good chance to further my study at the..arabic country like a..jordan or whatever..but I decided I dont like it..even I get the A1 in Arabic or whatever communication or higher Arabic I had..examination..but my interest is..to be..in English stream..so I asked my parents to go for UK..whatever to further in English stream..so they..reluctant to..allowed me for that because it is so far away..so I decided to join the International Islamic University..because..I think that is the best place..because..that..the..medium of the..study or instruction of the..international is English and Arabic..so I choose English medium..so I think the best place to study..so I went there for law degree. Me : So..I think thats all for the education.

Mr. Zulkifli : Yes. Me : Ok..Let me proceed with the next question..What is your main duty as a magistrate? Mr. Zulkifli : The main duty or the main function of the magistrate? Me : Yes

Mr. Zulkifli : To ask..a criminal to go to the prison..like today I ask them to go to prison to meet..to serve a sentence..Now..basically..my..my..primary function is..to uphold the justice..Meaning that..give the right thing to the right place and to the right person..so, anything or any person or anybody contravene..or break any and regulations..they will face the magistrate..they will face the..consequence..This is the main function..because the main duty is..to make sure the law and order in this particular place was..or were observe..by the..unit of the society..any particular subject..by the subject of

12

the

society..meaning

that

by

the

people..So problem..so

basically you settle

any it

dispute..any..difference..any..unbecoming

down..So the function of the magistrate of the 3rd person..as the 3rd party..to mediate..or to reconcile..the problem arose..among the subject or among the people..so..with the rules and regulation, you must uphold the rule of law..Meaning that the law requires..and the subject of the society or the people to do certain thing..You have to do..Anybody contravene..anybody refuse to follow..so..the magistrate having a good power..having a wide power to punish anybody..who are break any rules..any act of any legislation in which is possible in this particular country..Thats the main function..so you have to..meaning that..the..guardian of the law..Meaning that..the magistrate is the guardian of the law..the guardian of the right of the people..the guardian of the state..so you..As a magistrate, you uncounted or you wasted with the power, and so..you have to..exercise your this situation accordingly..with..and..you have to follow the rules in which stipulated in the code or in the..act..whatever stipulated to all the people..ok..thats all. Me.. : So Sir..Who is your inspiration in becoming a magistrate? Mr. Zulkifli : I dont have any inspiration for that..I have instinct that..if you do..If you did something..in which you looking for..you looking for..so..I think if you look all the seniors..all the judges..all the who are succeed..success..in their life..so its a good idol for you..for me..specifically I..frankly speaking..I..came from the..lower income family..Im not a well to do family..so, I have to be industrious enough to become a good person and to become personality somehow or rather in the future..so I have to be more..hardworking in my study or whatever..and you have to..there is an objective goal to achieve to..so you have to follow a person who are already success..so, whoever success before me,so I have to follow them..and accept as an example, in order to achieve the same..so previously..so I would..I

13

would say that..there is a lot of my friends..in which already given the mandate to be a magistrate..so I think why not we have to follow them to become a magistrate because I think I have a good enough space to become a magistrate..so I use that particular good space or the good the room to become a magistrate..so I have to achieve that..so whatever..obstacles..so I have to overcome and Im very lucky was ordering by the God to become a magistrate. Me : Ok..So far..What is the unforgettable experience while you are working as a magistrate? Mr. Zulkifli : Unforgettable memories unforgettable memories..I think a lot of sweet memories and a bitter memories as a magistrate. The sweet memory is..you was honoured by your job..meaning that you did something good and a person who are praised you..for your..for your..duty who carried..who are carried and give anything, anybody..so meaning that..if you..if you..manage to settle the dispute so..the subject or the person who are before you and come to you..and just express their thanks to me..so I get it a lot of sweet because I think..I think if you decided that particular person..meaning that you ask them to go to prison for the offend..later on you just met him somewhere..and he just greet you..ok Tuan..aa..Terima kasih kerana hantar saya ke penjara..now..Im a good person now..Its very sweet memory..like the drug addict..so when I went to pasar malam or wherever..or pasar to get the nasi lemak..whatever..as a normal person..I met them..so..thank you Tuan..I have a good family now..with your advice..I..change my life..This are sweet memory..so I still remember a few occasion that..even a traffic offender..when I go for..tom yam food..tom yam stall..and I sit alone and somebody come to me even they want to pay a revenge on me..they can remember that..I yes yes that..ok tuan, you just remember me?..I am sorry to say I cant remember anybody..so..Tuan masih ingat dak yang Tuan bagi denda ni?..ha?..you want to pay revenge on me?..no la Tuan..Terima kasih

14

la kerana bagi saya sedar kesalahan saya..Its very sweet memory as a magistrate..all..all of such thing..I just kept in my diary..and I will remember it for the whole life..Its a very sweet memory..and but the rest..the sweet memory be a magistrate, you will be salute by anyboby..Its very nice..when..when the police officer meet me or whatever..they..they..respect..so this..aa..this very sweet memory..When you do the hardwork, you get the position, you will be honoured..this is very sweet also..because you feel you are..you are respected person..or you like person who are slightly higher than others..but you must not be the snobbish, right?..You must be a down to earth person..This is very sweet also..because..all your hardwork before was..there is a payment of that.. for that. Me : Ok Sir..Have you received any rewards or appreciation?

Mr. Zulkifli : Yes..I received the ..letter of the..appreciation for the job given..the good job..the letter of..Meaning that appreciation by the my boss or whatever because you are followed the..law rightly..you do the job correctly so..The latest appreciation is I have received the appreciation with..with the good reputation..you are given a..perkhidmatan cemerlang..and whatever so you will be promoted and given a..good prevention for your job Me : Is that all?

Mr. Zulkifli : The rest Im still young and didnt get any Datuk yet. Me. : Ok..aa..What are your future plan for 5 years to come? Mr. Zulkifli : Ok..5 years..Now Im 30..I think hopefully get the family first huh?..but too hard to find a good lady now uh?..huh? because the lady so..so many..its a very big problem for..

15

Me. : Its hard to make a choice Mr. Zulkifli : Oh yes..There is the..balance..how to balance..this are weaknesses..this are advantage..so I think..no..no..it just..My future plan I think..I have to be more knowledgeable so..I need..some space to continue study..aa..to improve my legal facilities or to improve my communication skills..to improve my..my career..So there is no fast road about that..You have to..go through all the..all the..Meaning that before you to come a judge or whatever you have to follow the step by step and you must climb up..so for 5 years, hopefully Im no longer here because Im transferred maybe..because Ive already 5 years here..so slightly silent place..Im going to the big place, the busiest place rather than this silent place..you know?..because I only..I could see..I could see all the faces that just student UPSI only..all the with the baju kurung and the tie..on the hot weather and go to lecture room..so I think basically..Its the..I dont know maybe it would..I already promoted as a senior magistrate here..so maybe I can climb up a little bit to promoted for the good pay..but now is a good pay already..Its enough..for me..to eat..or whatever..because I can enjoy the payment..rather than as a student before must be tied with the budget, right?..now I slightly get a..good money or a good.. Me : Income?

Mr. Zulkifli : Its not income la..but its a good pay ja..income I dont think..income is 10 000 is enough for you..and to give..its a..its not a good job..yes..you get the handsome pay..but basically I think if you want to get more..you can go for the private..because government is a..already..stated that..certain..certain..amount is given to you..but its enough..because government you dont need to hard work..as far as you do the job..you do the work..yes..at the end of the month..you can get the payment..ok..but the

16

rest I think..I have to built up my family I think..because my mother already bising..because you have everything..what do you want..what you waiting for?..Im waiting for angel..and for bidadari, right? And I think I have to stop all the bachelor life ..yes..bechelor life never ending man..seronok..thats life..because huh..because my study time I dont have a time..because dont have a money..you cannot go anywhere..you cannot go for cinema everyday..now I can go to cinema every weekend..or all the weekend..if I like that particular movie, I just step in the cinema..but previously I cant do that because I dont have enough money..just..I use my scholarship..I think I was founded by MARA at that particular time..so the payment..the scholarship is very less..compared to nowadays..but I feel I am very lucky because I no need to pay back..because I get the flying colours, so they just reverred my loan as a scholarship..so I am very lucky..I have indebted for the..for the.. for the loan like the PTPTN right now huh..so everybody in hardship to pay back, right?..ok..I think for 5 years huh..I will say my age is 35..I no need to go to mecca first..because still young..Im thinking to go to ..Im going to..London or whatever.. Me : Travel around the world la?

Mr. Zulkifli : Yes..I like traveling. Me : Ok..Actually that is the last question from me Mr. Zulkifli : Ok..Thank you. Me : So..aa..Thank you Sir for your cooperation..and ..mm..this is..mm..our appreciation for your kindness. Mr. Zulkifli : Thanks a lot, Thanks a lot All : Thank you
