The story opens with a lavish wedding ceremony in rural Anatolia. A middle-aged groom with a large moustache and his bride, covered in a red bridal veil; guests dancing around them and guns fired into the air: an extravagant wedding ceremony is being held with two bands of drums and horns. At the end of the celebrations, which last until midnight, the bride is led ceremoniously to the bridal chamber. The bride and her sister-inlaw are then left alone in the room, and the sister-in-law gives the bride a final briefing on nuptial customs. From now on, the camera remains inside the bridal chamber. With her face draped in a red veil, the bride sits waiting for the groom, reacting oddly to the noises she hears outside.

The Sunni, one of the two largest branches of Islam, have a history of deadly hostility against the Alevi sect in Anatolia which dates back thousands of years. In areas where they represent a minority, many Alevis therefore tend to hide their religious identity. 1980 was a year of renewed Alevi massacres in Anatolia. Perhaps the worst of them was experienced in the city of orum. Our story centres on the tragedy of a family who flee the massacre to settle in the big city. Introducing themselves as Sunnis, they rent a flat in an apartment building one floor down from a Sunni family.

Patient conservationists will feast on this slowpaced, contemplative mountain hike made by 56-year-old Muzaffer zdemir, best known as the lead in Nuri Bilge Ceylans award-winning Distant. With barely a sliver of a plot to hold it together, this stunning collection of awe-inspiring landscapes combines with images of modern intrusions into the heart of nature, all of it backed by brief dialogues and spells of narration, for what would be best described as a litany for a self- destructive age. An ode to nature and an insistent indictment of those who destroy it arbitrarily. Home is an ideal choice for festival exposure, screened at the Adana Film Festival and already on its way to the Tokyo competition next month, this debut shows a keen eye for visuals combined with a toned-down elegiac mood that may not be sufficient for mass audiences, but should draw the attention of art cinemas. () The main character, Doan, is an architect suffering from an undefined mid-life crisis, who is told by his doctors to take some time off from the daily rat race hassle. His partner encourages him to go back to his hometown, far in the mountains of Northeast Turkey and on the way, collect some pictures of original water mills they might use in their work. . The town of ayrba in Trabzon province suffers from frequent fires, but is without a fire truck. When no support is forthcoming from the twin towns declared by the local mayor, he approaches the mayor of Diyarbakir for help when the two meet at an official function. The answer he receives is positive. One of the fire trucks surplus to Diyarbakirs needs is cleaned up, painted and made ready to be sent to Trabzon. A municipal worker by the name of Kosman is delegated to drive the fire truck from Diyarbakir to Trabzon. Kosman, a likeable Black Sea nationalist of around 30, has never met a Kurd in his life, nor ever set foot outside his hometown. Worse still, his thoughts about the south-east of the country are based entirely on hearsay. So the idea of the fire truck coming from Diyarbakir is not to his liking, and he puts his foot down, refusing to go. In the end, however, Kosman is persuaded to set off from Trabzon, and one morning he arrives in Diyarbakir, seeing the city for the first time.

An enthusiastic filmmaker decides to turn his camera lens on the social reality around him. In the course of exploring the morality, the rules and lawlessness of his environment, he finds himself confronted with layers of social schizophrenia. He and his hidden camera are witness to vitriolic voices and accounts; his camera is stolen by neighbourhood kids while still recording. The film reveals a young generation that would kill without a qualm once adult, while at the same time highlighting the ineffectiveness of the justice system and social institutions in most places.

The film opens with one of the great milestones of the 20th century... Kemal, a university student of around 20, hears news of the fall of socialism on a tiny radio in the shambles of his shared student flat. Before his eyes, a world view he has newly espoused, that has shaped his value system, is being destroyed by the people who live within that very system. Despite the debacle unfolding on their doorstep, the revolutionary organization Kemal belongs to continues resolutely with its struggle in universities and labour circles, defying all kinds of police and state oppression. If Kemals political struggle is consuming, so too is his emotional world. He nurses a platonic love for Leyla, a political comrade, his feelings so intense that they sometimes overtake his revolutionary duties. When his closest friend and comrade Abidin is killed under police torture, Kemal is recruited to the armed wing of the organization by Pala, the local man in charge. As such, he is now illegal.

F. Serkan Acar (Artvin, 1975) started to study Pyschology at Istanbul University in 1992. At the university he wrote film critics and did interviews for cinema magazines. Any given evening, any given place, any given married couple. Everything seems normal at first: the couple J and M A are preparing to have another couple, K and D, over for dinner. The guests arrive, a gift is presented and the conversation begins. They talk of this and that, completely normal chit chat. Or so it seems. But we gradually realize that the universe these characters inhabit is disturbingly strange: anything to do with art is taboo, words of hatred and malice are regarded as normal, and when the next-door neighbours are shot down by the police, none of the characters seem surprised. The two couples sit down for dinner and the psychological tension increases all the time, as we understand that there is no hint of friendship or compassion between the four people. It is as if every emotion, word and action is superficial. The only thing that is important is: carnal pleasure and consumption.

One day, Nuris orphanage friend, Izzet, comes to visit unannounced. Just out of prison, Izzet and his colourful character fire Kemals imagination, and he decides to make a film about him. Unfortunately, it soon turns out that beneath his friendly exterior, Izzet is a psychopath. When he is refused entry into a bar, he forces his way in and kidnaps actress znur Kula. We are all as similar to, and different from each other as the seeds of a pomegranate. Yet we are still a collective whole, just like the pomegranate itself. Its the crust of faith that keeps us together, the faith that we have for each other. But what if the crust cracks? What if we begin to doubt everything and our trust in each other? What if we lose our sense of justice? What if we seek our own justice? Wont the seeds scatter everywhere like a cracked pomegranate?
The Pomegranate tells the story of a woman seeking her own justice. The Pomegranate questions the justice of four people with different beliefs in a house, in half a day and in their own realms of faith.

Zenne Dancer is the contemporary story of three unlikely friends: Ahmet, a hyper-masculine gay (bear), Can, a male belly dancer (Zenne), and Daniel, a German photojournalist. The three find themselves up against systemic, institutionalized and culturally embedded homophobia which leads ultimately to the tragic death of Ahmet at the hands of his own father. Through their dynamic friendship and the events that unfold around them, the film explores layers of intolerance along masculine/feminine, east/west and traditional/ modern lines in Istanbul, a city that is itself geographically, culturally and historically at the very crossroads of those divides. One day, Ahmet and Can meet Daniel, a German photojournalist newly arrived in Istanbul whos working on a coffee-table book about the city. The three of them forge a friendship and Daniel and Ahmet grow even closer as a relationship begins to blossom between them.

Circle is the story of ordinary people in the characters of Feramuz, Arif and Betul, who conjure up interesting solutions to extraordinary situations and obstacles generated by the system. When the system we live in throws up weird and incomprehensible obstacles and regulations, we tend to strive to adapt to the system instead of trying to change it. We strive to survive by creating even more weird and extraordinary solutions. In a way, this attitude is hope for hopelessness, a solution for the insoluble. A character of this nature has always come to be worth telling. As in the logical argument of philosopher St Augustine Credo quia absurdum (I believe it because it is absurd), the absurd has the power to be irrefutable and indestructible. The seemingly isolated stories about each character that tell of their lives, needs, goals, and methods in fact take us to the picture of a system that makes people think and do the extraordinary.

In a snowy Kurdish mountain village in eastern Turkey, Berf, an old woman, and Jiyan, her young granddaughter, are troubled when the only man of the household, Temo, the son of one and father of the other, is arrested and taken into custody by the local gendarmerie. The commanding officer has received word that the villagers are hiding guns. It is announced that all the men of the village will be kept in custody until their families submit and hand over the guns they are hiding. But the problem is there are no guns, at least to the knowledge of these two blameless women. Despairing and on their own, Berf and Jiyan are faced with a long journey in search of a gun that they can exchange for their beloved Temo. But how can their innocence and naivety find a way out in a system that threatens, eventually, to drag them into the sullied world of an interminable conflict?

Muharrem suspects that he has an ugly, vacuous face, worse still that its set in a nefarious expression. As a result, hes constantly intrigued by other peoples faces; he studies and compares them with his own, landing himself in farcical and often humiliating situations in the process. If at first it seems like innocent, human curiosity, this performance gradually begins to take on a malicious dimension and develops into a showdown as horrific for himself as it is for other people. Inside is a reflection on the tragicomic side of human nature, inspired both by the F.M.
