Thank you for the get well wishes, cards and benefit donations. I would love to name names but I am afraid that I would forget someone and hurt feelings. I, however, do want to thank Denise Eck and the Faulkner Family for the planning/ organizing/set-up/clean-up and whatever else they did to make this a great day. I was overwhelmed at the wonderful turnout and was greatly appreciative of everyone and everything. It was so nice to see so many people and to visit with them. It was truly an amazing day. The idea of doing something can be a good thing but when in recovery, it is key to plan and work to put ideas into action. Recovery is about bettering oneself and ones conditions in life. Setting out on a positive path towards this, with action, is necessary to the completion of ones goals. An individual should work daily to better his/her condition through action and this will contribute to lifelong recovery. FREE PRIVATE DRINKING WATER SUPPLY TESTING AVAILABLE $150,000 has been secured through the Colcom Foundations grant program Marcellus Environmental Fund for the Headwaters Quality Drinking Water Project to provide low income families in Jefferson, Elk, Potter, Cameron, Clinton, Centre, and McKean Counties with funding to secure chain of custody water sample analyses of their private water supplies prior to Marcellus Shale Gas Well Drilling activities. Additionally, we are providing mandatory educational workshops and material explaining how to interpret the water quality results, when do things become toxic, and what the homeowner should do in case something does happen to their water supply. RC&D will partner with various organizations and agencies including PA-DEP, Penn State Extension and the local school districts and conservation districts. There is funding to conduct 100 water samples in McKean County, to date they have received 48 so there is still room. The water samplings will be conducted May 14, 2012 through June 22, 2012 with a mandatory educational workshop to be held on Wednesday, July 11th, 2012 from 5-7pm, location to be determined. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we cant verify claims for every ad. As soon as we have decided on a vacation location, I go to all the local coupon sites that email their deals and sign up. Usually we know a few months in advance where we will be vacationing and we will then purchase the coupon deal for restaurants and sightseeing if they come up. We also are signed up for a local city that we often visit for weekends. We again purchase these coupon deals for this city knowing that although we dont have any concrete dates to visit, we will be visiting within a few months regardless. -Cam

figures out the distance to each and uses this information to deduce the location of the device in a process called trilateration. GPS devices have made paper maps obsolete for many people. While GPS devices can be very convenient, especially on road trips, there are some tips to keep in mind. * Place the GPS device where it wont obstruct your vision or take your eyes off of the road for a good deal of time. * Dont treat the GPS as if it is infallible. Even with map updates and other accessories, a GPS can still make mistakes. Use common sense, especially where it would seem the GPS is guiding you in the wrong way. *Do not play with the controls while operating the car. If you need to adjust something on the GPS, do so only after pulling over to a safe area. * Have a general idea where you are going so youll know if the GPS is potentially guiding you in the wrong direction and can maneuver in advance.

droppings and water spots or salt stains leftover from winter. * Fix foggy headlight lenses. Many spring and summer road trippers travel at night so their days can be spent soaking up some sun at the beach or lake. Before heading off for parts unknown, motorists should inspect their headlight lenses to reduce risk of accident. If the lenses are yellowed and foggy, thats likely because salt, ozone and road debris has dulled them to a point where vision can be impaired, placing drivers and their passengers at risk. But foggy lenses dont mandate an expensive headlight replacement. * Check the battery. Over time, battery terminals and cables will start to corrode. Such corrosion will eventually eat away at the batterys parts, creating a bad connection that sooner or later will require the battery be replaced. Check the battery before your trip and remember to clean the battery periodically as part of routine vehicle maintenance. * Address windshield nicks and bullseyes. Nicks and chips in the windshields are a common problem regardless of the season. But such damage is most prevalent in the winter because of the extra debris thats on the road. These nicks and cracks need to get fixed as soon as possible to prevent them from spreading and resulting in the need for a windshield replacement. Oftentimes, motorists can address nicks and bullseyes in their own driveways in a matter of minutes. More information on easy repairs that you can do yourself can be found at www.permatex.com.
inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction. If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. govern-ments official website on distracted
Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who dont. An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. The Steps 1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely. 3. Learn more from the LG Text Ed website, www.lgtexted.com. As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving. In order to keep distractions to a minimum, LG encourages all drivers to never text while driving and to always use a hands-free Bluetooth device when operating a vehicle.
On The Road Again: Ready Your Car For Spring And Summer Travel
(MS) -- The return of warm weather marks the return of road trips for millions of motorists across the country. Whether going to the beach or heading off to parts unknown, hitting the open road with the windows down is a time-honored tradition for drivers of all ages. But such road trips can prove disastrous if drivers dont take the right steps to prepare their vehicles for spring and summer travel. The following are a few ways motorists can ensure their car is ready to tackle the open road. * Tighten things up. Loose parts, such as exhaust clamps, license plates, and interior trim panels, can create rattles and cause parts to get damaged or fall off. Whats more, rattling sounds can be a noisy nuisance for drivers and passengers alike. Permatex Threadlockers can be used to keep the nuts and bolts from coming loose and save parts replacement costs. They also have a threadlocker for plastic fasteners, which vehicle manufacturers have grown to rely on more and more. * Wash your car. A newly washed car not only looks good, but its often much safer as well. Take your car to a car wash a few days before the trip and have the vehicle thoroughly cleaned. A thorough cleaning will remove dirt and grime from the vehicles undercarriage, not to mention unsightly bird
Catalytic Converters
(NAPSA) Catalytic converters contain no moving parts, so when they fail there is usually another problem often in the engine that has damaged the unit. Simply replacing the converter without repairing the root cause of the failure could end up damaging the new unit as well.

Inexpensive and userfriendly, the instructions guide users through the process of sealing the crack and preventing it from spreading. If the crack is beyond the scope of a do-it-yourself fix, a windshield repair service that specializes in this type of work might be necessary. These companies use products that harden quickly and reglaze the windshield so that the crack may not even be noticeable afterward. Upon inspection, a mechanic or a windshield replacement company may determine that the crack is not something that can be mended. The entire windshield will have to be replaced at this point. In some cases the windshield can be removed and replaced in the same day. While there is no way to prevent a cracked windshield entirely, there are certain ways to reduce the risk. This includes avoiding running over any debris on the road that can be kicked back at the windshield.

interior might begin to grow mildew, which is both unhealthy and unpleasant. In general, clean the vehicles interior once a month to prevent mildew growth and the buildup of dirt and grime. * Dont fall in love with the new car smell. Few consumers can resist the famed new car smell. Though enticing, the new car smell is actually an outgassing of toxic chemicals from newly formed plastics, and the chemicals in these gases have been linked to birth defects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, premature births, and early puberty in laboratory animals. Though this doesnt mean consumers should avoid buying new cars, it should inspire consumers to address the new car smell immediately. Filters can easily and effectively remove the harmful gases that stem from the new car smell, while continuously removing additional odors as the car ages. * Vacuum carpets, floor mats and between seats. Carpets and seating are another collection point for dirt and pollutants and need to be vacuumed thoroughly. Make sure to get the floor mats, the floor under the floor mats and all the way under the seats. Pound your seats with something large like a baseball bat to loosen and knock out all the dirt and soil that has settled into the creases and stitching. * Protect newer vehicles on hot days. Hot weather can take its toll on drivers, and it can also wreak havoc on their vehicles interior. Heat from the sun can cause the vehicles plastics, vinyl or leather parts to emit volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, can produce both short-term and long-term adverse health effects. Whenever possible, park in the shade or use a sun shade on the windshield. In addition, slightly opening the windows in spring and summer promotes air flow through the cabin, helping reduce the risk of VOC buildup inside the vehicle.
The base plate is the threaded part of the filter. It also directs the oil flow. The gasket is the flexible rubber ring that seals the filter to the engines oil filter base. Types of Filters The quality of the filter depends on the material used to make each part. In basic filters, the media is of natural wood fibers. These filters do the job but need to be changed frequently. Middle-grade filters use a blend of fibers that are primarily cellulose with a minimal amount of synthetic fibers. These enhance the media strength and efficiency performance. Premium filters use microglass filter technology. These advanced filters are designed to extend the life of both vehicle and equipment. In addition to superior filtration media, the other internal and structural components are of higher-quality materials, making for easier installation and removal as they are much less likely to crush in the process. Vehicles under warranty should follow the vehicle manufacturers recommended filter change intervals.

Oh, deer: Get the facts about this road hazard
Deer can be found all over the country, and healthy deer populations are increasingly creeping into residential and urban areas seeking food and mates thanks to developments encroaching on deer habitats. This increases the chances of motorists having run-ins with deer on the roadways around their homes and places of business. State Farm estimates that 2.3 million collisions between deer and vehicles occurred in the United States during the two-year period between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2010. That number marks a 21.1 percent increase in the number of incidents from statistics gathered just five years earlier. West Virgina and Iowa rank first and second, respectively, as the states where a driver is most likely to collide with a deer. Vehicular crashes can cause serious damage to a car and even be fatal. According to National Geographic, the average white-tailed deer can stand at 6-feet-tall and weigh between 100 and 200 pounds. That animal stands as a formidable foe should a collision with a car occur. It may seem like one is hitting into a barrier or an impenetrable object. Although fall, when deer are migratory and seeking mates, is the prime season for collisions with deer, collisions can occur throughout the year. The spring is when females give birth to their young, so speckled fawns may inadvertently dart across the road with mothers chasing after them. The displacement of deer habitats due to urban sprawl also magnifies the problem of risking an
accident with deer. There are certain tips that can reduce the chances of a deer and vehicle collision. * Keep in mind that deer are most active between 6 and 9 p.m. At dusk, they may be harder to see. * Take note of posted deer crossing signs. These are erected in places where deer are most actively crossing. * Deer generally travel in herds. So drivers who see one deer should expect to see others nearby. * Use highbeams when driving at night to better illuminate rural areas. * Drive slowly in areas where deer are likely to be, such as by open fields. * Car-mounted deer whistles are not a reliable deterrent. * Do not swerve erratically to avoid a deer collision. This can result in a collision with another car and increase risk of injury and damage. In areas where deer collisions are prevalent, extra insurance coverage may be needed on vehicles. Therefore, drivers should speak with their insurance providers.

Expert Tax Tips For Saving Time And Money (NAPSA)-Although you have a few extra days to file this years tax return, experts encourage you to file sooner rather than later. Whether youre getting a refund or owe taxes, theres incentive for everyone to file now. Taxes are an important part of your personal finances and rushing could cost you a lot of money this year and in the long run, says Jessi Dolmage, spokesperson for TaxACT. Luckily, you dont have to go it alone and doing your taxes doesnt have to be painful. Todays solutions make tax preparation and filing easy for everyone. Dolmage shared her top tax tips: 1. Get organized. Put all your W-2s, 1099s and other tax documents in one place. Have last years return handy
as well for comparison and your AGI that can be used for e-filing. 2. Double-check your data. The IRS rejects millions of returns each year because of very minor errors involving transposed characters and incorrect math or filing status. Verify names, addresses and birth dates. Be sure youre using Social Security numbers as they appear on the cards. Using import features offered by software or an online solution can help decrease these errors. 3. Choose smart. Not all tax preparation solutions are created equal, especially free ones. Many free solutions exclude forms for complex returns with itemized deductions, investment income, and capital gains and losses. Others provide minimal help and tools. 4. E-file. Nearly 70 percent of taxpayers e-filed
their federal returns last year. Unlike paper filers, youll know when the IRS accepted or rejected your return within 48 hours. Combined with direct deposit, you can have your refund in as few as eight days. If you owe, e-file now and pay later via credit or debit card or a scheduled automatic with-drawal any- time before or on April 18.

Identity thieves use the data to empty the victims financial accounts, run up charges on the victims existing credit cards, apply for new loans, credit cards, services or benefits in the victims name, file fraudulent tax returns and more. Typically, IRSimpersonation scam e-mails state that the IRS needs certain personal and financial information to process a tax return, tax payment or refund. They may claim the e-mail recipient is being audited. They may mention specific monetary amounts or genuine programs, such as the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), to add credible detail to the scam.
The e-mails often contain links or attachments to what appears to be the IRS web site or an IRS form. However genuine in appearance, these phonies are designed to elicit the information the scammers are looking for. Alternatively, a link in a scam e-mail may download malicious software onto the taxpayers computer when clicked. The software is often designed to search out and send back to the scammer personal and financial information contained on the taxpayers computer or obtained through keystrokes that the scammer can use to commit identity theft. Unsolicited e-mails claiming to be from the IRS or an IRS-related component, such as EFTPS, should be reported to phishing@irs.gov.

How To "Get Your Plate In Shape" (NAPSA)-According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, it's important to increase your focus on fruits and vegetables and your understanding of proper portion sizes. To help, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) offers suggestions on how to "Get Your Plate in Shape." Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables. Whether fresh, frozen or canned, a variety of vegetables-especially dark-green, red and orange vegetables, plus beans and peas-is an important part of your diet. Choose "reduced sodium" or "no-salt-added" canned vegetables. Add fruits to meals and snacks. Buy fresh fruits and those that are dried, frozen or canned in water or 100 percent juice. Make at least half your grains whole.
Choose 100 percent whole-grain breads, cereals, crackers, pasta and brown rice. Check the ingredients list on food packages to find whole-grain foods. Drink fat-free or low-fat milk. Fat-free and low-fat milk have the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk but less fat and fewer calories. If you're lactose intolerant, try lactose-free milk or a calciumfortified soy beverage. Vary your protein choices. The protein food group includes seafood, nuts and beans, as well as lean meat, poultry and eggs. Twice a week, make seafood the protein on your plate and keep meat and poultry portions small and lean.
Cut back on sodium and empty calories from solid fats and added sugars. Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Choose 100 percent fruit juice instead of fruit-flavored drinks. Compare sodium in foods and choose those with lower numbers. Add spices or herbs to season food instead of salt. Switch from solid fats to oils when preparing food. "Foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean-protein foods contain the nutrients you need without too many calories," explains registered dietitian and Academy spokesperson Andrea Giancoli. She also recommends avoiding oversized portions by using a smaller plate, bowl or glass. Learn More For more information on getting your plate in shape, visit www.eatright.org.

BREAKING THROUGH THE GLASS CEILING As the old saying goes, A womans work is never done. Unfortunately, many women find this adage still rings true, particularly in regard to the workplace. According to the AFL-CIO, the average 25-year-old woman who works fulltime, year-round until she retires at age 65 will earn $523,000 less than the average working man. The U.S. Department of Labor says that women earn roughly 20 percent less than men. Though women have made large advances toward economic equality, a disparity in pay between men and women still exists. As if unequal working wages werent enough, many women face barriers in finding jobs and advancing their careers. The term glass ceiling refers to the unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate
ladder, regardless of their qualifications or achievements. Many women feel they have gone as far as they can with their employer thanks to a lack of options at the supervisory level, or an unwillingness of higher-ups to consider them for advancement. As difficult as it can be for women to advance, there are ways to break through. In 2009, a report by Bloomberg News discovered that many women in top CEO positions earned substantially more than their male counterparts. Female CEOs of Yahoo!, PepsiTM and KraftTM earn salaries as high as $45 million. Despite progress, there are still many women earning less and getting left behind. There are strategies women can employ to change this. * Be more aggressive in negotiations. When negotiating salary, dont be shy. Be aggressive when pursuing a salary that is commensurate
with your experience. * Get involved. Network with like-minded women who have already paved their own way in the business sector. Women working in predominantly male fields can develop networking opportunities that are enjoyable to both men and women. * Find a mentor. Networking remains one of the key ways to advance in the business world. Relying on the experience of a mentor can help you with your career and the pressures that come with it. Seek mentors whose accomplishments you admire and who are willing to offer advice and encouragement. * Start your own business. Women who find their careers have hit dead ends may want to consider going into business for themselves. This way they can spread their wings and be in charge.

PROS AND CONS OF ELECTRIC CIGARETTES Smoking is bad for you, and many smokers know it. However, that knowledge is not enough to keep millions of people across the globe from lighting up. Though smoking was once a habit primarily associated with men, the reinvention of advertising geared toward female consumers persuaded women to light up as well, and now cigarettes are just as often associated with women as they are with men. Unfortunately, the negative side effects of smoking, including increased risk of cardiovascular disease, are just as easily associated with women as men. Over the years, numerous nicotine alternatives have been developed in the hopes of reducing the often damning effects of cigarettes. Recently, electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, have emerged as a safer alternative to cigarettes. But are the claims too good to be true? The idea for an e-cigarette emerged in 1963 when a patent was acquired by Herbert A. Gilbert. The concept was described as ... a smokeless non-tobacco cigarette ... to provide a safe and harmless means for and method of smoking by replacing burning tobacco and paper with heated, moist, flavored air... Due to limitations in technology, and the fact that the negative health implications of cigarette smoking were not yet widely known, the device never came to fruition. The modern-day e-cigarette was developed by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and introduced to the general market in 2004. The first international patent was received in 2007. Since then there have been many incarnations of the e-cigarette produced by companies across the globe. An e-cigarette is essentially a battery-powered device. It vaporizes nicotine held in a small cartridge so that it can be inhaled
5 pe
without the need for burning and the production of smoke. These devices have been designed to mimic the look and taste of a normal cigarette, which can satisfy the psychological and physiological effects of smoking. Many people are drawn to e-cigarettes because they are odorless, which means that the traditional smell of cigarettes will not end up on their hands, hair and clothing. Air inside homes and other buildings also wont be tainted by cigarette smoke. Many businesses actually allow the use of e-cigarettes inside offices where traditional tobacco products are banned. Another advantage of the e-cigarette is its cost in comparison to traditional cigarettes. Though a cost analysis depends largely on how much an individual smokes, its generally cheaper to support an ecigarette habit than it is to keep paying for traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes are reportedly free of the 4,000 chemicals, tar and carcinogens found in tobacco cigarettes. Varying strengths of nicotine in the e-cigarette cartridges mean they may also be used as smokingcessation devices. Also, considering that it is nonflammable, theres no risk of starting a fire with an e-cigarette. Currently there are no large-scale tests or clinical trials conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of e-cigarette devices. In the past, the Food and Drug Administration has attempted to prevent ecigarettes from entering the United States. There have also been ongoing tests by the FDA to determine if safety claims are accurate. In May of 2009, the FDAs Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis tested the contents of cartridges sold by two separate vendors. Dyethylene glycol, a colorless, largely odorless, poisonous, and hygroscopic liquid with a sweetish taste, was found in some of the cartridges. In addition, tobaccospecific nitrosamines (TSNAs) were found in many of the cartridges. Inconsistent nicotine amounts were also discovered. NYU Langone professor Jonathan Whiteson, medical director of the Culinary and Pulmonary Wellness and Rehabilitation Program, has said that e-cigarettes are harmful to users health. Dangerous chemicals have been identified in the vapor, not just nicotine, and they can potentially cause lung damage, Whiteson said. The professor also argues that there is no proof that these devices can be used as a method for quitting smoking, since they are still full of highly addictive nicotine. E-cigarettes may or may not be a preferred method of reducing reliance on unhealthy cigarettes. Before purchasing them, it is best to read all reviews and safety information to determine a brand that is best for you. FREE TOWELS Sometimes hotels will give you out-of-service towels for free if you ask. These are usually perfectly good towels that are too worn to be acceptable for guests rooms. The slight roughness of these towels makes them good for cleaning up dirty jobs, like scrubbing down the dog after hes been romping in the mud. My husband uses them to wipe down his hands and arms after working outside. -Jen in Michigan
LADIES BUSINESS CASUAL SLACKS Ive worked in offices for years where I am expected to wear business casual clothes. Womens dress pants are pricey, flimsy, and often dry clean only. I save money by buying khaki, white and black jeans. I use a seam ripper on a new pair to take the belt loops and back pockets carefully off, and they look like dress pants for much less money. In 10 years, no one has noticed the difference. Keep your black jeans looking good by re-dying them a couple of times a year. -Mary C.

NATURAL MOSQUITO CONTROL For mosquito control, nothing beats purple martins and mud martins. Put up some purple martin houses. We got our 12-family birdhouse and the pole at Wal-Mart. These birds eat their weight in mosquitoes every day. When the little mud martins come and build their little mud houses in the eaves of your house, dont tear them down. They are very much worth the mess they make. We never have mosquitoes when they take up residence. Alas, we moved a block away last year and they didnt find us. Hopefully they will this year. -Edna

*** DID YOU KNOW? Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells that have developed abnormally. Cancerous cells are also known as malignant cells. While many cancers have symptoms in the area where malignant cells, or tumors, are present, some cancers do not present any noticeable symptoms at all until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. Cancer treatment generally depends on the stage of the disease. Earlier stages may result in surgery to remove growths or cells. Later stages may require chemotherapy or radiation treatment to kill the cancer cells. *** REGULAR BAPTIST CHURCH Valley Rd., Smethport, Church: 814-887-5632 Pastor Jack Gregg 814-887-2826 Sunday School (all ages)....................9:30am Sun. CHEAP HOME SECURITY MEASURE Most people dont know that patio doors can be lifted off their tracks from the outside, unless they have a locking pin on the inside. Most older models dont have this. So I went to the farm store and bought cowbells and strung a cord that was about 2 feet long through them and hung them at various places. I hung one on the patio doors, front door, etc. They are very loud. -NAJ

Caleigh Wolosewicz, age 5, held a Pajama Drive collecting books and PJs for local area youth in need. She set a goal of 100 of each and surpassed this with collecting 169 pairs of PJs and 352 books. We would like to extend our deepest thank you to the people of the area for their tremendous generosity in donating pajamas and books. Caleigh held a drive last winter and got 42 books and 42 PJs so she set a goal of 100 of each for this year. She placed collection boxes around Smethport (Hamlin Memorial Library, The Guidance Center, Nikkys Dance Studio, Route 6 Diner, St. Lukes Episcopal Church and The Country Porch) and over in Bradford, PA (at UPB and their public library) from Jan 9 until Feb. 29. Donations were collected and then taken to a local shelter that is affiliated with the Pajama Program. Caleigh is from Smethport, PA and is the daughter of Brooke Wolosewicz.
