When I was a kid, I liked swimming very much. Two weeks ago I went to Semarang to attend my cousin's wedding. I was there for four days. I was involved in the preparation of the wedding ceremony. Like other Javanese wedding ceremonies it has several complicated traditional rituals. The first ceremony was Siraman (bathing ceremony). Siraman means take a bath. The siraman ceremony was organized in the afternoon. I was also involved in preparing the place and the stuff needed. After the siraman, the bride was led to the wedding room. She was dressed with a traditional woman's blouse and batik clothes. Make-up was put on her by a traditioanl make-up woman who led the whole ceremony. The bride looked very beautiful. The second ceremony was Midodareni (ceremony on the eve before the wedding). The bride had to stay in the room from 6 p.m to midnight accompanied by some elder woman giving her useful advice. My other cousins and I also visited her for a while. The next ceremony was Peningsetan or Srah srahan (traditional engagement ceremony). The family of the would bride visited the parents and the family of the would be groom. They were bringing some gifts. After this ceremony, I helped the women in the backyard. We packed the snacks for the party in the morning. In the following morning, Ijab ceremony (religious marriage consecration) was held. I sat right behind the bride. I really did

not want to miss this moment because it is the most important phase in the wedding. After ijab, there were some Javanese ceremonies following the wedding celebration. They were Panggih, Balangan suruh, Wiji dadi, Sindur binayang, Timbang, Tanem, Tukar, Kalpika, Kacar, Kucur, Dahar Klimah, Sungkeman and Mertui ceremonies. After the wedding rituals, the reception followed. The newly wed couple received blessing and greetings from the guests. The newly wed couple looked very happy, although they couldn't hide their tired faces. I went back home in the evening by the last train. I went happily because I could attend my cousin's wedding even helped the preparation.

Spice Paste - 2 cloves of garlic - 2 red chillies, seeded and fried - 5 eyes bird chillies, seeded and fried (you can add more if you wish to) - 5 cm kencur (also known as kaempferia galangal), peel off the skin - 1 tablespoon dried prawn paste (terasi) - 7 kaffir lime leafs - 2 tablespoon tamarind mixed and squeeze with 100 ml lukewarm water and drain. - 50 g palm sugar or more if you like more sweet taste - 1 tsp sugar Additional Ingredients

- 100 g bean sprouts, cleaned - 100 g spinach, cut - 100 cabbage, shredded Directions 1. Fry garlic and the chillies. Set aside. And then grind or blend together with the rest of ingredients of spice paste. Add the fried peanut. Continue blending to make it smooth. 2. Add some of warm water to make the sauce thicken 3. Cook all the vegetables. Set aside. 4. Serve: Arrange the vegetables, and then pour with the peanut sauce. Serve with plain rice (nasi putih), crispy rice flour cracker (rempeyek), fried egg and cucumber.

One night, while they were praying, Buto Ijo a giant with supranatural powers passed their house. He heard they pray. "Don't worry farmers. I can give you a child. But you have to give me that child when she is 17 years old," said Buto Ijo. The farmers were so happy. They did not think about the risk of losing their child later and agree to take the offer. Later, Buto Ijo gave them a bunch of cucumber seeds. The farmers planted them carefully. Then the seeds changed into plants. No longer after that, a big golden cucumber grew from plants. After it had ripe, the farmers picked and cut it. They were very surprised to

see beautiful girl inside the cucumber. They named her Timun Mas or Golden Cucumber. Years passed by and Timun Mas has changed into a beautiful girl. On her 17th birthday, Timun Mas was very happy. However, the parents were very sad. They knew they had to keep their promise to Buto Ijo the giant but they also did not want to lose their beloved daughter. "My daughter, take this bag. It can save you from the giant," said father. "What do you mean, Father? I don't understand," said Timun Mas. Right after that, Buto Ijo came into their house. "Run Timun Mas. Save your life!" said the mother. Buto ijo was angry. He knew the farmers wanted to break their promise. He chased Timun Mas away. Buto Ijo was getting closer and closer. Timun Mas then opened the bag and threw a handful of salt. It became sea. Buto Ijo had to swim to cross the sea. Later, Timun Mas threw some chilly. It became a jungle with trees. The trees had sharp thorns so they hurt Buto Ijo. However, he was still able to chase Timun Mas. Timun Mas took her third magic stuff. It was cucumber seeds. She threw them and became cucumber field. But Buto Ijo still could escape from the field. Then it was the last magic stuff she had in the bag. It was a shrimp paste or terasi. She threw it and became a big swamp. Buto Ijo was still trying to swim the swamp but he was very tired. Then he was drowning and died. Timun Mas then immediately went home. The farmers were so happy that they finally together again. 17. Last month my family and I went to Toraja to attend Grandpas funeral. It was my first time to go to such a ceremony. We gathered there with our kin in the ceremony. Overall, the ceremony was quite elaborate. It took about a week. Several days before the ceremony was done, grandpas body was kept in a series of houses arranged in a circular row around an open field called tongkonan. His corpse was dressed in a fine wearing.

The funeral was performed in two phases. First, we slaughtered the pigs and buffaloes, and then moved the corpse to face north. In this ceremony we wore black clothes. After that, the corpse was placed in a sandal wood coffin. Then, it was brought out of the house and placed on an open platform beneath the granary. Meanwhile, my uncle, my brother, and I prepared the wooden puppet and a funeral tower called lakian. The next phase of the ceremony was held in this place. The coffin is borne from the house and placed in the lakian. During the day, there were also buffalo matches. They were great matches. In the night, we were feasting, chanting, and dancing. On the last day, the grandpas coffin were lowered from the funeral tower and brought up to the mountain side family graveyard. It was followed by great shouting and excitement from the relatives and the guests. Finally, we installed the wooden puppet on a high balcony where other puppets representing the members of a whole family were already there. The funeral ceremonies made my family and me tired. However, we were grateful because it ran smoothly.

Gawai Day or Gawai Dayak, is a festival celebrated in Sarawak. It is both a religious and social occasion. Gawai Dayak literally means Dayak Festival. Dayak visit their friends and relatives on this day. Those far away receive greeting cards. The mode of celebrations varies from place to place. The festival is celebrated on the 1st of June every year. However, it actually starts on the evening of 31st of May. Gawai Dayak celebration may last for several days. On the evening of 31st of May, the ceremony to cast the greediness spirit away (Muai Antu Rua)is held. Then, offering ceremony (miring) is conducted. Thanking gods for the good harvest, guidance, blessings and long life is done through sacricing a cockerel. At midnight spirit welcoming procession (Ngaluh Petara) is held. Then, the celebration gets merrier as people start singing and reading poems. On the 1st of June, the homes of the Dayaks are opened to visitors. Cock-ghting, blowpipe skill demonstration, and ngajat competitions are held. It is also during this time of the year that many Dayak weddings take place. Today, it is an integral part of Dayak social life. It is a thanksgiving day marking good harvest and a time to plan for the new farming season or activities ahead.

Analytical exposition

Everybody should change their way of life to reduce global warming. There are several things that we can do. One of them is by buying and consuming fresh local groceries as much as possible. It of course includes local vegetables, fruits, bread, etc. Local groceries dont need much transportation to get it into the market. It of course means, the amount of carbon dioxide produced is less than the groceries from other region. Therefore, by buying local groceries we are helping reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced. Consuming fresh groceries instead of frozen ones are healthier for us. Furthermore, fresh food or groceries means no requirements for it to be freeze up. It means that no electricity is needed and saving energy means reducing carbon dioxide and money.

So, from now on we should consume fresh local groceries to reduce global warming.

Before we are going to smoke, it is better to look at the fact. About 50 thousands people die every year in Britain as direct result of smoking. This is seven times as many as die in road accidents. Nearly a quarter of smokers die because of diseases caused by smoking. Ninety percent of lung cancers are caused by smoking. If we smoke five cigarettes a day, we are six times more likely to die of lung cancer than a non smoker. If we smoke twenty cigarettes a

day, the risk is nineteen greater. Ninety five percent of people who suffer of bronchitis are people who are smoking. Smokers are two and half times more likely to die of heart disease than non smokers. Additionally, children of smoker are more likely to develop bronchitis and pneumonia. In one hour in smoky room, non smoker breathes as much as substance causing cancer as if he had smoked fifteen cigarettes. Smoking is really good for tobacco companies because they do make much money from smoking habit. Smoking however is not good for every body else.

There once were two best friends named Damon and Phintias. They lived in Syracuse, Sicily in the 4th century BC. They were philosophers of Pythagorean School. One day Phintias was sentenced to death by Dionysius the Younger, the ruler of the city, for plotting against his rule. Phintias then begged for permission to go home to nish his private affairs before hes executed. Dionysius of course refused his request. Phintias felt very sad and hopeless. But then, Damon came to Dionysius and begged to grant Phintiass request. Damon loyally offered to replace Phintias while he is gone. He is willing to take Phintiass place in prison. Dionysius then agreed and granted their request. Phintias was very happy and thankful for his friends sacrice. He promised Damon that he will returned as soon as possible. He started home as fast as he can. Days gone by and Damon waited very patiently in jail. But until the day before his execution, Phintias had not returned. And on his execution day Phintias still had not returned. Damon knew that he had to take Phintiass place and get executed if Phintias didnt show up. It turned out that Phintias had tried to keep his promise to his best friend, but he cannot. He got delayed on his way back. Phintias heart beat fast. He felt very uneasy. He feared that he would be too late, and Damon, his faithful friend will get executed because of him. Dionysius told Damon that its the execution day and since Phintias had not returned he had to take his place. Incredibly, just as Damon was about to die in his place, Phintias arrived. He shouted to stop the execution. He felt so relief that his friend is still alive. He apologized to Damon for his delay. Damon said that its alright and he told Phintias that he trusted him. Dionysius was so impressed by this example of loyalty that he pardoned Phintias and asked to share their friendship.
