ABSTRACT
Now-a-days technology improves a lot. With the improvement of this technology more power is consumed and most of the power is wasted by using home appliances when we forgot to switch-off them. In order to avoid this type of power wastage , the home automation can be introduced. It consists of a modem based control signals given by the user which perform particular task. The control signals are given through the computer and all the home appliances are connected to that system. We can switch-off the home appliances from anywhere on this globe. However it has a disadvantage of complexity. In order to connect more number of appliances more is the circuit complexity in the modem. In order to reduce this complexity more number of modems should be used.

Introduction :
The aim of the report is to control home appliances like Television, Refrigerator, and Lights and other home electrical appliances using a personal computer. In this report a PC is interfaced with a micro-controller and it is connected to relays to which the appliances which are to be controlled are connected. The micro-controller controls the relays for switching the appliances, ON or OFF. Pre-defined symbols are sent to the Microcontroller through RS232 cable. A home automation system integrates electrical devices in a house with each other. The techniques employed in home automation include those in building automation as well as the control of domestic activities, such as home entertainment systems, houseplant and yard watering, pet feeding, changing the ambiance "scenes" for different events (such as dinners or parties), and the use of domestic robots. Devices may be connected through a computer network to allow control by a personal computer, and may allow remote access from the internet. Through the integration of information technologies with the home environment, systems and appliances are able to communicate in an integrated manner which results in convenience, energy efficiency, and safety benefits.

Definition:
Linking of appliances, and monitoring and control devices, used in a home through an intelligent network over a medium such as coaxial cable, electrical power wiring, infrared, radio frequency, or spread spectrum technology, coordinated by a computer. Automation is the process of automatically performing everyday functions around the home to save you time, energy, money and at the same time offering improved security. The automation is performed by a central controller. The concept of home automation is to connect all of these systems and devices to a central controller so that they can be controlled from anywhere and react to one another. For example, as you arrive home, your home-automation system can automatically turn off the sprinklers, open the garage door, unlock the front door and disable the alarm, light the

downstairs, and turn on the TV. Home automation provides a more convenient & elegant atmosphere for the family to compliment and match the lifestyle. Home automation deals with providing a network in the house which links computers & peripheral equipment. smart chip bearing household appliances like dish washers, washing machines, microwaves and other electrical appliances. sub-systems like Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning (HVAC), and security systems.

Centralizing control :
Besides the upcoming standardisation of home automation hardware, there is also the issue of the control software. In older systems (and some contemporary ones), the control of each home automation system needed to be done separately, and there was thus no central control system. This sometimes led to a great amount of remote controls, one being needed to control each individual part of the system. However, with the new generation of home automation systems, central control can be foreseen. Software such as Fast Track Team Home Personality Software Greeter 1.0 (aka "Cleopatra"), e-Home Automation, allows the control to happen from a single computer or television screen, and/or even from a smartphone (e.g. iPhone).

System Description :
We use Telnet server to access our software from anywhere. Internet Medium is used to control Home Appliances from a remote PC. 8051 Controller is used to perform control function such as on-off. Telnet uses TCP\IP Protocols using a specific port to access the software. Electric Relays are controlled by controller for the Automation of Home Appliances.

TELNET Working :
Telnet is a terminal emulation program for TCP/IP networks such as the Internet. The Telnet program runs on your computer and connects your PC to a server on the network. We can enter commands through the Telnet program and they will be executed as if you were entering them directly on the server. To start a Telnet session, you must log in to a server by entering a valid username and password. Telnet is a common way to remotely control Web servers.

TELNET SERVER :
Telnet Server connects remote computer with Server. It uses a port and network connection i.e Internet. Telnet Server is programmed using Visual Basic having a GUI.

Connecting to the Server :

To Connect to the server we need to use the command telnet which is available in almost all the version of windows. Type in the run window command telnet along with the IP address and the port number where your server is configured. The name of the server will be displayed in telnet widow, then connected status will be shown by typing the password.

Algorithm :
Main part of our program is in C++. The back bone of our project is CMD.C, the commands that are received from the user via serial window are processed. SERIAL.C file contains the function, which take care of the serial transmission and reception. The baud rate used for the serial transmission is 9600 bps. STRFUNC.C This C files handles the comparison and respective function numbers which are to be called when a command is received.

Other systems :
Using special hardware, almost any household appliance can be monitored and controlled automatically or remotely, including:

Coffeemaker or tea maker (such as the Teasmade) Garage door Pet feeding and watering Plant watering Pool pump(s) and heater, hot tub and spa Sump Pump

A homemade Internet-enabled cat feeder.

Well and Booster Pump Automation.
