Foster Families Go to Summer Camp

Cooie Grey-Lavin works with RemiVista Inc. supporting foster families. She has developed a summer camp program that takes entire foster families to camp. The program is organized to provide supportive services to both kids and parents. Cooie has done two foster family camps with remarkable success. This year she is expanding her program to include kids with developmental handicaps. The Chico Optimist Club has supported this program by helping Cooie find a camp and obtain funding for camp facilities through the Optimist Foundation for Handicapped Camping Inc. She will discuss her program as the guest speaker at the Chico Optimist Club meeting next Thursday. This meeting will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday April 5th at the Cozy Diner in Chico on Mangrove in the meeting room. For more info contact: Larry Jendro, President Chico Optimist Club 533-1413 or ljendro@msn.com.

Spencer Street Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The City of Oroville will mark the grand opening of the Spencer Street Bus Transfer Station located between Gold Town Plaza and Currier Square on Spencer Street, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 4, 2012 at 10 a.m. Attending the ribbon cutting ceremony will be city officials, city council members, elected representatives from the state and possibly the federal government, and the Mayor of Oroville. Spencer Street Bus Transfer Station planning and design phase was made possible with help from a congressional allocation by Congressman Doolittle in the amount of $346,500. The federal funds helped pay for the development of plans and specifications. The City matched the federal funds by allocating $86,625 to the project. Instrumental in the completion of the Spencer Street Bus Transfer Station was the partnership between the City of Oroville and Butte County Association of Governments also known as BCAG. BCAG acted as project manager on behalf of the City soliciting proposals from qualified planning and design consultants. With help from BCAG, they helped the City secure an additional $1,500,000 in Congestion Mitigation Air Quality federal funds to construct the Spencer Street Bust Transfer Center. Construction of the Spencer Street Bus Transfer Station was completed November 28, 2011. BCAG is the governmental entity that manages and operates the B-Line bus system in Butte County. For more information about BCAG, please see visit their website at www. bcag.org. For questions regarding the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, please contact Art da Rosa, Director of Public Works, at 530-538-2420.

YMCAs Healthy Kids Day

Best Egg Hunt in Town! The YMCA is pairing up with Dr. Gary J. Soudans dental office and the Oroville Kiwanis Club to provide the best egg hunt in the community. This FREE event is Saturday, April 7 from 9am to 1pm at Hammon Park and will run rain or shine. 4,000 brightly colored plastic eggs filled with prizes are laid out all over Hammon Park by those Easter Bunnys helpers the Oroville Kiwanis Club. Dr. Soudan has been generously sponsoring this egg hunt for 21 years for children up to ten years of age. All kids that participate get a goodie-bag of nonfood items from Dr. Soudan and the hunt begins at 10am! While waiting for the egg hunt, the YMCA is providing interactive booths that include fun booths such as healthy food samplings (the smoothie bike will be there for you to make your own smoothie by peddling); Jack Splash fish simulator, obstacle course; crafts; animals to pet; and much more. At the YMCA, we know that when the school year ends, many kids lose exposure to activities that keep them moving and learning. Healthy Kids Day will help parents begin thinking early about what their kids need to stay physically and intellectually active in the summer, said Jackie Arnold, Program Coordinator for the YMCA. Summer is just around the corner and is an ideal time for kids to get out and grow so they are healthier and sharper when the next school year begins. Parents can get connected by participating in activities with their kids. Each kid will get a passport to get stamped at every station and win a prize when completed. It is also an opportunity to register for YMCA programs like the Summer Day Camp, Swim Lessons, Sport Camps, Biddy Sports, and Leaders in Training teen program. You can also get information about YMCA health and wellness programs for adults such as Water Fitness, Tai Chi, Pilates, Strut, Latin Hip Hop, and Muscle Strengthening. No need for kids or adults to be bored this summer when YMCA has so many activities and programs right here in our community. For more information about this event or YMCA programs, call 533-YMCA (9622); visit their website at orovilleymca.org; or visit them at the corner of Oak and Robinson Street in downtown Oroville.

Thursday Night Market Season Kick Off

The Thursday Night Market (TNM) returns to kick off its 16th season on Thursday April 5th! The TNM features farm-fresh produce, delicious food, arts and crafts, and live local entertainment. The market takes place every Thursday from April 5 through September 27, 6-9PM, rain or shine! The market is located in Downtown Chico on Broadway from 2nd to 5th Streets, including side streets on 3rd & 4th as well as City Plaza. The area will be closed to vehicle traffic. Guests are encouraged to come downtown to experience the wide variety of specialty retail shops, delicious restaurants, quaint cafes, and art galleries the downtown has to offer. The market also hosts more than 100 popular vendors offering a wide variety of products and services. Certified growers offer the freshest assortment of fruits and vegetables, farm fresh eggs, bouquets of fresh cut flowers, nuts, honey, plant starts, and much more. Vendors also provide authentic artwork and crafts as well as handmade clothing and jewelry. Each week there are performances by local musicians and entertainers. Performances range from belly dancers to balloon artists, and from classic jazz to bluegrass and rock bands. The whole family will enjoy an evening at the market - with an inflatable slide, a bungee trampoline, and special childrens activities, the market is a great outing for the young and the young at heart! During the off-season, the DCBA spent a significant amount of time soliciting input from downtown members and working to make improvements to the event. The biggest change is that vendor booths on Broadway between 3rd & 4th Street will be located in the center lane rather than lining the sidewalks. After collaborating with downtown members and the City of Chico, a new layout has been designed to equally highlight vendors and storefronts on this block. This is a pilot program - were testing the logistics of it and hope to build upon it in other areas of the market in future years if it is successful. In addition, the TNM has been certified by the USDA to accept and redeem SNAP Benefits which are issued by Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT). This program will offer SNAP Benefit recipients another opportunity to access fresh, healthy, locallygrown and processed foods! There are nearly 25,000 benefit recipients in Butte County alone, so we are excited to add the Thursday Night Market to the list of local farmers markets accepting EBT. Per Health Dept. code specifications, no animals are permitted within market boundaries and for the safety of market patrons, no bicycle riding, skateboarding or rollerskating is allowed. The Thursday Night Market is produced by the Downtown Chico Business Association (DCBA) in partnership with Community Sponsors Courtesy Motors, Dragon Graphics, Recology Butte Colusa Counties and Xfinity. Media partners include KHSL TV 12, KNVN TV 24, CW10, 103.5 The Blaze, Mix 95.1, News Talk 1290 KPAY, Fox Sports 101.7 FM and 1340 AM, 939 The Hippo, Classic Hits 96.7, The Wolf 95.7, Power 102, 106.7 Z Rock, Thunder 100.7, 92.7 BOB FM, KZFR FM 90.1, KKXX 930 AM & 104.5 FM, Chico Enterprise Record and Chico News & Review.

Local Boy Earns Eagle Scout

Boys Scouts have been a long tradition in American culture since 1908 directing young men into the Scout Oath: On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. When a boy enters scouting, he learns to live that oath by engaging in many activities designed to develop him into the Scout Law of being Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. Boy Scouts demonstrate these characteristics by earning merit badges in areas of First Aid, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Communications, Personal Fitness, Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving, Environmental Science, Personal Management, Swimming or Hiking or Cycling, Camping, and Family Life. There are over 100 different merit badges a scout can earn, but the most highly regarded award is earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Ross Ozanne is well on his way of earning the rank of Eagle Scout by completing a project where he designed and built benches for the YMCA. These benches will be used in the locker rooms and swimming pool area and will have plaques thanking all the businesses that contributed donations to the project. One of those plaques commemorates Cody Olson, a young man that lost his life on June 4, 2011 in a car accident. I want to do this project for the YMCA, states Ross, because I learned to swim at the Y when I was younger. I am now working at the Y as a lifeguard. There is quite a bit more required to become an Eagle Scout than just making benches. The Scout must be active in making an impact that creates a positive difference in American society by living by the principles of the Scout Oath and Law in their daily life. They must earn at least 21 merit badges, Rosss dedication earned him 30 merit badges. A project proposal must be approved by the organization benefiting from the project, the unit leader and unit committee, and the council or district. As a demonstration of leadership, the Scout must plan the work, organize the personnel needed, and direct the project to its completion. Upon completion of the project, a detailed report must be submitted with the Scouts Eagle application that describes the project, who will it benefit, the guidance and assistance the Scout received from others, and what materials were used and how they were acquired. All the work on the project must be done while the candidate is a Life Scout and before the candidates 18th birthday. Though Ross was born in Paradise, he attended schools in Oroville. He attended Saint Thomas, Ophir, Central Middle School and is now enrolled in Las Plumas High School. He enjoys riding quads, working on cars, hunting and many activities at school. I became a Scout because it looked like it was a fun thing to do, he explains, The experience of becoming an Eagle Scout will help me with many life lessons. I have received many useful tools for discovering the outdoors, learning self-management, and the drive to go after something I want and need to push forward. Its been exciting to work with Ross on his project, states Celeste Silva, Director of the YMCA. My two brothers became Eagle Scouts and those skills have truly benefited them in all areas of their lives. Ross is hard working and very dedicated to what he wants to accomplish. Ross plans to go to college to become a nurse. He believes that having an Eagle Scout rank will benefit him in many ways when he applies for a job, having a family, and being a community leader. The YMCA is having a reception and presentation of Rosss Eagle Scout project for the public to view on Tuesday, April 10th at 5:30 p.m. at 1684 Robinson Street in downtown Oroville. For more information about Rosss project and YMCA programs, call 533-9622.

World Premiere of Elegy of the Falling Leaf

Wind Ensemble to Perform World Premiere of Chico State Seniors Music Composition, Elegy of the Falling Leaf, April 7 What does Chico State senior Kevin Valenzuela have in common with music greats Leonard Bernstein, Richard Wagner, Felix Mendelssohn, and John Philip Sousa? All will have compositions they have penned performed by CSU, Chicos elite music group, The Wind Ensemble, during the upcoming Band Classics concert, Saturday, April 7 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. Valenzuela, a graduating double major at CSU, Chico Music Composition and Recording Arts will have his work, Elegy of the Falling Leaf, performed for the first time. He was given the rare opportunity of composing a work for the Wind Ensemble by Chico State music composition professor David Dvorin. When I was asked if I would be willing to write a piece for the Wind Ensemble, I was very interested, he said. This is by far the biggest project Valenzuela has worked on at Chico State. The Wind Ensemble is easily the largest ensemble I have written for, and it was my first time writing for many of the instruments. I spent all of my compositional time last semester writing, continued working in my spare time over break and well into this semester. Elegy of the Falling Leaf he said represents a sentimentality I have towards the smaller things in life. I wanted to take something small and make it big, and so I imagined a leaf breaking from a tree and flying away on a windy day before finally coming to rest on the forest floor. I was inspired perhaps by the falling leaves last autumn, which is my favorite time of year, and my favorite time to be in Chico. Other works on the program include Bernsteins Overture to Candide, Wagners Trauersinfonie, Mendelssohns Overture for Winds, op. 24, Ira Hearshens, Divertimento for Band, Sousas The Liberty Bell, and several other works. This will be a chance to hear original band music composed by what are usually thought of as classical orchestra composers, said Royce Tevis, Department of Music faculty member and director/conductor of the Wind Ensemble. Advance tickets, at $15 adults, $13 senior citizens, and $6 students and children, are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333; add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related seating please call 898-4325. About Kevin Valenzuela Kevin Valenzuela was born in Hayward California, but grew up mostly in far northern California. He began composing in 2004 while in high school and continued writing in college. Now in his sixth and final year at CSU, Chico, Kevin has divided his time between writing and recording. He has submitted works to the New Music Symposium for the last three years, and has spent his spare time composing for Chico State Game Studios and a variety of other student projects. His work is largely influenced by quintal theories, tone cluster harmonies and late romantic/post romantic composers. He has written for a variety of ensembles and electronic instruments and his senior recital (for those of you interested in hearing more) is scheduled for May 3 at 4:30 p.m. in PAC 134. He is set to graduate this May with a degree in Music Composition and a degree in Music Industry and Technology (Recording Arts). I have always wanted to write music because to me it means you get to play every instrument at once (or at least every instrument you write for). Ever since arriving here at school I have wanted to compose for large ensembles, performing huge beautiful works that so far have existed only in my mind.

(StatePoint) Americans love pasta, and with minor adjustments, they could cook it perfectly. If your noodles are tasteless, clumpy or tough, its time to review your technique. Salt the water based on the amount of water youre cooking with, not the amount of noodles. Wait until its boiling before adding the pasta. Stir immediately, and return your water to a boil quickly. Opt for a range with quick time-to-boil burners. For example, the Italian company Bertazzoni makes ranges with different size high-efficiency burners, so that any size pot will cook with precision. When the pasta is done, drain immediately to avoid mushiness. For an authentic Italian experience, dive into pasta piping hot.

UNDER THE SEA

Gardening with Alex

Alexandra Heath Following the Ancients
Thousands of years ago in the Brazilian rainforests, indigenous peoples found a way to make the poor soils of the Amazonian basin rich enough to support food crops to feed the people who inhabited the area. This was an astounding feat, since left to its own devices the soil could support the lush tropical growth of the forest, but few, if any, food crops. Later, as scientists and archaeologists moved into the area in search of the signs of ancient civilizations and artifacts, they discovered the rich Amazonian soils created by the original inhabitants. These ancient soils, called terra preta may just be the answer were looking for not only for rehabilitating the depleted soils created by industrial agriculture, but maybe even a way to stop the increase in greenhouse gases, commonly called global warming. Today many gardening and environmental organizations and individuals are experimenting with making and using the basis of terra preta, a process of burning hardwoods in a reduction atmosphere to create a product called biochar. Along with compost and natural fertilizers, poor or marginal soils are becoming fertile, supporting crops for food and feed. And thats good news for your backyard garden. Biochar isnt difcult to make, but it does require a retort, a container that can be closed after it has been charged with the wood to be reduced, before being placed in a replace or outdoor burn container. At present, there are no large commercial companies producing biochar, but there are some small gardening companies that produce small amounts for retail sales. Its pricey stuffabout $30 for a 10-pound bag or $50 for a 25-pound bag. So if you have the ability, producing small amounts for your own use will save you some money and make your garden a super-producer. Whats especially interesting about biochar is its ability to sequester carbon. The release of carbon into the atmosphere is the culprit behind global warming. Right now humankind is releasing more carbon into the atmosphere than is rained back out to be used by plants for growth. Biochar, which should not be confused with charcoal (as in briquettes for your barbecue), is a form of hard carbon. When viewed under a microscope, a one-gram slice of biochar (about the size of a pencil eraser) has the surface area equivalent to a house. Its pitted with pores and pores on the walls of pores. When its added to the soil it doesnt break down to become plant material. It stays in the soil and builds structure into a carbon matrix that resists decay, sometimes for centuries. In the soil it creates tilth and permits the ow of air and moisture. So, by taking biomass (plant materials that would decay on the surface and release carbon to the atmosphere) and burning them in a reduction atmosphere, all the carbon is sequestered in the biochar, which goes back into the earth, but does not decay and release carbon to add to greenhouse gases that lead to global warming. Of course, if indigenous peoples are displaced so that rain forests can become biochar, or monocrops of genetically modied trees are planted over vast acres of prime agricultural land to feed the industrial manufacture of biochar, the earth (and humankind) will be worse off. If, on the other hand, biochar is produced locally and sustainably using feedstocks that would otherwise decay or be burned to create greenhouse gases, then we might be looking at several gigatonnes-peryear of carbon sequestrationcarbon removed from the atmosphere and put to good use rebuilding depleted soils or making your backyard garden the most productive ever. According to the article Home-Scale Biochar, eightfold increases in plant vitality have been observed after the addition of biochar to the soil! If you think the ancient peoples of the Amazon rainforest had some pretty good ideas that make sense for modern-day gardeners and are interested in how to make and use biochar, here are some resources: The Biochar Solution: Carbon Farming and Climate Change by Albert Bates Building a Biochar Retort: www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6a8TdyMIdA Home-Scale Biochar March-April issue of Back Home, No.117
