HOLE OF THE DAY

NINE DAILY FACTS

MASTERS TRIVIA
What distinguishes the 14th hole from the others at Augusta National? A: Its the only hole where Jack Nicklaus never made a birdie. B: Its the only hole without bunkers. C: Its the only hole not named after a flower. SEE ANSWERS, 12A

KEY ANNIVERSARY
75 YEARS AGO: Byron Nelson won his first major championship with a stunning rally in the final round. Nelson set the course record with a 66 in the opening round, but a 75 in the third round allowed Ralph Guldahl to take a four-shot lead into the last day. The tournament changed dramatically on the 12th and 13th holes. Nelson went birdie-eagle, while Guldahl went double bogey-bogey a six-shot swing in just two holes. Nelson closed with a 70 to finish at 5-under 283 for a two-shot win. Augusta National dedicated the Nelson Bridge at No. 13 in 1958 to commemorate his feat.

KEY STATISTIC
The Masters is the only major in which no one has ever posted all four rounds in the 60s.

Erosion damage to the Laurens Street bridge on Colleton Avenue from Sunday evenings rain will keep the bridge closed for repairs for an indefinite period of time. For a map of the The South Carolina Department of Transdetour, see page portation closed the 12A. bridge Monday morning because of a partial failure of the bridge, according to Jeff Terry, a resident construction engineer for Aiken County. It looks like part of the earth embankment either washed or collapsed or both and fell out from under the end of the support of the bridge, Terry said. Right now, were trying to figure out how to stabilize it and keep any further damage from occurring. Terry could not speculate on how long the bridge might need to be closed. Were just getting started with the process right now, he said. Well have to develop a plan for addressing where we go from here. The area around South Boundary Avenue and Laurens Street is closed, except to local traffic, and detour signs have been posted in the area directing traffic down Park Avenue and Chesterfield Street to reach South Boundary Avenue and avoid the bridge, according to Aiken Public Safety.

The fact that golfers and spectators from across the country come to Augusta for the Masters each year is common knowledge. But what about the gallery guards, the people who make sure spectators are where theyre supposed to be? One might assume that these are area residents who are just looking for extra dollars. The reality, though, is that golf fans from all over apply to volunteer for the job of tending the ropes at Augusta National. While theres no pay involved, one benefit of the job was obvious to Michael Vinson of
