Transport of used fuel

While recycling used fuel, AREVA has built large expertise for used fuel transport :
More than 60 000 used fuel assemblies already transported since 30

years
In France, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Japan For EDF: around 200 transport casks shipped per year (~ 1200 tHM)

AREVA has a dedicated organization for all nuclear transports : The Logistics Business Unit (including TN International Company)

Cask evolution
The TN12 family cask has been used since 1977 to transport used fuel.
they are able to transport a wide range of fuel characteristics, BWR
or PWR type.
With casks of various weight and capacity (TN12, TN 13, TN 17, TN

24, TN 52, TN97 )

First licensed under IAEA 1973 regulation, TN12 has been granted the IAEA 1985 package approval

Cask evolution
After long years of good services, the TN12 family concept will be replaced to anticipate :
the evolution in regulation the evolution of fuel characteristics : higher burn up

and higher enrichment

AREVA is currently developing a NEW GENERATION of transport casks TN G3 family, first cask in 2016, including EPRTM technology Safety, Sustainable development, innovation and cost effectiveness are the drivers of the new generation cask design, so that it can fulfil the need of the nuclear industry during decades - like TN12 family did

Fleet Management
The Fleet management is a key point to guarantee the availability of the cask and the cost effectiveness

AREVA current fleet in use :

2,200 cask in operation

from up to 130t, with more than 50 heavy casks 80 trucks including 9 dedicated to heavy casks 46 railcars dedicated to heavy casks

TN International
ATOMECO 2011 AREVA TN INTERNATIONAL Nathalie Allimann - p.7

Fleet Management
Necessary means for effective fleet management :
Dedicated workshop for

cask maintenance
Optimized preventive

maintenance program
Software to follow each

movement and control Know-how of the cask behaviour Training of the loading teams
Maintenance workshop at La Hague Facility

Effective fleet management takes part of the safety for transportation

Transport organization
Because the transports are on public field, this is very sensitive to the person and environment It has always been a priority concern to the AREVA Group Dedicated Transport organization integrates the following aspects:
Preventing the risk and tight control of the logistic

supply chain

Emergency response Global acceptance

Improved Security

Public Acceptance
When transport is concerned, the stakeholders are from various type all along the routes. To prepare its communication, AREVA - maps its stakeholders - establishes and implements communication plans - messages must be tailored to the audiences.

Partnership
AREVA Logistics Business Unit is currently working by different ways on partnership with Russian companies. We know that today ROSATOM is undertaking activities in the field of development and production of new transport and storage casks and we are studying possibilities for cooperation in this field. This could concern
Development of transport fleet cask (design, licensing AIEA 2005 or NRC) Transport fleet available right now for spent fuel, easily adaptable to VVER or

RBMK spent fuel

Transport fleet available for vitrified waste (transport and storage) Many transport solutions for even special nuclear material (liquid, sludge,

wastes, damaged fuel)

Dry storage solution Exchange of best practices in transport supervision, risk management
