CA2 - Part II

You will start to work in a small group in the Classwiki. Firstly, you need to make some decisions as a group to prepare for the writing activity. For this part of the activity you should communicate with your partners using the "discussion" button which you can find at the top of your group's page in the wiki: Please note:

Teamwork is asynchronous but you should check your group page in the ClassWiki as frequently as possible so that team decisions can be made as easily as possible. Please try to connect every day during this collaborative stage.

It is VERY important that all communication between members of the group takes place in your group page (using the DISCUSSION button and not in private mails)

40% of the evaluation for this CA is based on how you work together and it is important that the teacher has evidence of this work through your communication in your Group page. You will have to discuss the hypothetical statement below and brainstorm ideas.

Later, you will use these ideas in the writing task which you will do collaboratively, with the other members of your group.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO 1) Brainstorm ideas for your group essay

Consider the following hypothetical statement: The government has decided to increase the number of immigrant workers allowed

into the country. The new immigrant workers will consist of skilled high tech, qualified workers and also workers to carry out manual labour. In your group, using the discussion button of your group page in the wiki, discuss this statement and write a list of arguments for and against an increase in the number of immigrant workers coming into your country. Each member of your group should contribute at least 1 idea for both sides of the argument. It will probably not be necessary to use all these ideas when you begin writing, but it is good, initially, to have as many ideas as possible. Some suggestions for points you could consider: Allowing more immigrant workers to enter the country could mean:

a more diverse workforce. a more equal division of resources among the richer and poorer countries linguistic enrichment and cultural diversity an improvement in local peoples awareness of different cultures an increase in unemployment rates. an increase in the birth rate. a burden on the social security system. a proliferation of ghettos. social and racial conflict. an increase in crime.

2) Divide the writing among the members of the group

Decide as a group WHO will write each of the 4 paragraphs of the essay:

Paragraph 1: Introduction Paragraph 2: Arguments in favour (of increased immigration) Paragraph 3: Arguments against Paragraph 4: Conclusion: the concluding viewpoint of the whole group

Important: The exercises in the writing section of the materials will help you organise the structure of the essay. Please note however, that some of these exercises state that paragraph 4 of this type of essay should be the writers personal opinion. As the objective of this CA is to write a collaborative (not a personal) essay, paragraph 4 should present the concluding viewpoint of the whole group.

3) Nominate a spokesperson for your group who will represent the group.
Remember to:

Include arguments for and against an increase in immigrant workers (the point of view that you write about may or may not correspond to your own personal opinion).

Use as many different resources for ideas as possible, either from the course materials or the internet, but express them in your own words. It is not acceptable to copy sections of text and submit them as your own work.
