From the Presidents Desk:

The Prince of Wales Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has proclaimed the Week of April 15th to April 21st as PRINCE OF WALES HEROES IN ACTION WEEK. This week is also appropriately National Volunteer Appreciation Week! April has been the month in which we choose to honor the Everyday Heroes among us who make our communities better places to live and work and play. It has been the practice to use the proceeds of our annual raffle to recognize individuals chosen by the island communities. See our letter on page 3 for the 2012 Special way that we have chosen to celebrate this week. We invite you to join our efforts. April 15th is the early bird deadline to register for the 2012 Marathon, Inaugural Half Marathon and the relay options. See the list of sponsors who make the 13th Annual event possible on page 5. The planning committee is seeking items for the 2012 Goody Bag for the anticipated 300 participants. These can be coupons to be used in your establishments during Memorial Day weekend, or one of the many advertising items offered in promotional catalogs. See the contact information on page 5 if you want to be involved! The Chamber office staff has doubled! Sharon Brosamle joins Rebecca Chester as a Co-office manager. The two team up to deliver all of our member benefits and keep the office open for more hours. See the left hand column for April hours! Please remember to share your news with the readership of this newsletter. It is posted on our website. In addition to its delivery to our 225 members, parts of it are repeated in the Island News each month. Please send your news to the office email address. And dont forget dates for the upcoming months calendar featured on the last page. See Page 2 for a list of all the news items contained within the next 11 pages!

CHAMBER BOARD APRIL MEETING

The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will meet for its APRIL meeting on Wednesday, APRIL 18th at noon at the AP&T Conference Room in Craig.

Instead of Everyday Hero presentations honoring individuals from Island communities, the Chamber this year will honor the volunteer squads in each Island community who are always ready to respond to emergency calls involving Fire, Medical and Search & Rescue situations. The Chamber had considered having a BBQ at the Island Air Hanger at the Klawock Airport in April to honor the volunteer First Responders and their families. It was the Chambers intent to seek contributions of food and money from grateful Island businesses and individuals who would like to help honor the many volunteers for their services. Rather than hosting the BBQ event, the Chamber decided that money instead of refreshment would make a better and more lasting impact in the communities! To that end, the Board has proclaimed the week of April 15th-April 21st as POW Heroes in Action Week. The Chamber invites our members, Island businesses and everyone on the Island to participate with the Chamber in honoring the emergency squad volunteers on our Island, and provide support to them in whatever way possible. The Chamber received about $4800 from its 2011 Alaska Airlines/Pacific Airways raffle and will disburse the proceeds to each community that has volunteer squads, with each entitled community receiving about $600. Each community Fire Department and EMS squad will determine how the money will be spent. The Chamber spoke with the Fire Chiefs and EMS people from eight Island communities and their needs are many and their budgets small. Coffman Cove, Hollis, Kasaan, Klawock and Thorne Bay said purchasing new protective Turn Out Gear for fire fighters is their top priority, and one set of Turn Out Gear costs $1900. Craig said new air bottles, at a cost of $411 per bottle, is the departments most urgent need. Naukati said a new flotation water pump costing about $2900 is the item needed the most, and Whale Pass said it needed new fire hose that would cost more than $1000. The$600 is not very much considering each communitys enormous need for firefighting and EMS equipment. So this is why the Chamber asks Island businesses, Chamber members and individuals to consider monetary donations to the fire fighters and EMS squads in their respective communities. The volunteer emergency squads across the Island would be most appreciative. A separate mailing will be sent to all POW Chamber members with the list of squad needs and a contact name and address to whom a contribution can be sent.

The mission of Southeast Conference is to undertake and support activities that promote strong economies, healthy communities, and a quality environment in Southeast Alaska.
The mid-session was held in Juneau in March. It was attended by some of POWs finest! Are you in the dark about Southeast Conference? Heres some insight from their own website: Southeast Conference was formed in 1958 as an association of communities joined to advocate for the establishment of the Alaska Marine Highway System. While our commitment to its development and efficient operation continues, Southeast Conference has greatly expanded both its membership base and its overall mission. Today, Southeast Conference is a regional, nonprofit corporation that advances the collective interests of the people, communities, and businesses in southeast Alaska. Two of the members of the Board of Directors hail from Prince of Wales Island: Richard Peterson of Kasaan and Bryce Dahlstrom of Viking Lumber in Klawock. Elaine Price is now employed by them as a Workforce Development Coordinator, Jon Bolling and Jim Gould spoke at the Mid Winter conference held in March to invite the delegates to come to Prince of Wales. Jim talked about the Bike tour that is being planned to take place during the Fall conference. The Chamber provided a flash drive of Prince of Wales Photos that were shared during the luncheon as City of Craig Administrator Jon Bolling issued an invitation to all the attendees to come early or stay late on Prince of Wales for the 2012 SE Conference to be held on September 25th, 26th and 27th, 2012. A catch up meeting was held April 2nd with a review of all the tasks that need to be tackled. Reservations are already being received at a number of accommodations in the area. There is much to do to prepare for the arrival of an expected 250 attendees. THE NEXT PLANNING MEETING WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, MAY 7, 2012 AT 1:00PM AT THE CRAIG CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS

POWCAC MEETING SUMMARY by Budd Burnett

WHALEFEST BEACHCOMBER FAIR RAFFLES LUCKY WINNERS! Updates on U.S. Forest Service activities on Prince of Wales Island, POW Vocational and Technical Training Center Project and IFA operations highlighted discussion at the POWCAC meeting at Thorne Bay City Hall on Wednesday, March 28. The meeting had been scheduled for Tuesday, March 27, but was rescheduled to enable members to attend the funeral of Clara Peratrovich in Klawock that day. Frank Roberts and Stan McCoy from the U.S. Forest Service handed out a 9-page outline of the Planned Program of Work on Craig and Thorne Bay Ranger Districts. Projects included Fish, Wildlife, Watershed and Subsistence; Environmental Planning, Silviculture, and Timber Sale Offerings. Also included were several Recreation, Lands, Minerals and Heritage projects. A progress report on the POW Vocational and Technical Education Center was presented by Karen Cleary, Project Director. The new facility is being financed with a $3.2 million general obligation grant, and construction is scheduled to be completed by December 2013. She said an air to air heating system for the facility is being considered as a less costly alternative to a wood furnace presently under consideration. Those in attendance at the POWCAC meeting participated in the POW V&T Needs Assessment Survey that Karen is conducting Island wide. IFA Interim Director Dennis Watson reported that the Stikine Ferry is undergoing its 2year Haul Out inspection and repair work in Ketchikan, and the Prince of Wales Ferry will be making the daily runs from Hollis to Ketchikan during the interim. He said parking space at the Hollis IFA terminal can be increased by 30 spaces by not allowing parking longer than 72 hours in the central main parking area. Those parking in the perimeter for longer than 72 hours will be required to sign in at the IFA office showing the departure and return dates. Thorne Bay Mayor Jim Gould spoke about the Bike Tour that is being planned during the Southeast Conference to be held in Craig on September 25th, 26th and 27th. He said that bikers from Juneau and Ketchikan have shown an interest in traveling to POW to participate in the tour that will include visiting several Island communities including Hollis, Hydaburg, Klawock, Craig, Thorne Bay and Coffman Cove. Ron Wolfe of Sealaska Corporation talked about forest management, trail systems in tree thinning habitat suitable for taking groups out for community field trips, and about a concern about the decline in population in Southeast Alaska. According to a population chart he provided, it showed a decline in population in all of Southeast except Juneau that forecast a 3% increase in population by 2034. The chart, Southeast Alaska Population Real Decline 1996 Forecast to 2034 depicted Ketchikans population declining by 33% and Prince of Wales Island by 49%.The population forecast project was prepared by the Alaska Department of Labor and can be viewed at http/labor.alaska.gov/ research/projected/pub/popppro.pdf. Jon Bolling, POWCAC Chairman, reported that Craig City Planner Brian Templin would be conducting Emergency Ready Communication Training on April 2 through April 5 at the Craig Fire Hall. Those interested in radio operator communication, etc. who want to attend the training can call Brian at 907-826-3275 The next POWCAC meeting will be held on May 22 in Kasaan.

FARMERS MARKET EVENTS BEGIN IN MAY

Submitted by Budd Burnett

The Prince of Wales Farmers Market Board of Directors has been changed to an Advisory Committee working under the ausVETERINARY SERVICE pices of the City of Thorne Bay---the recipient of grant monies for the Farmers Market Program. Benefits to the Farmers Market 907-617-8389 under the new organization include not requiring the Advisory QUALITY AND COMPASSIONATE CARE Committee to have its own banking account, P.O. Box, telephone and bookkeeping system, as all of these necessities are already FOR YOUR PETS in place in the Thorne Bay City Administration Office.

ISLAND TO ISLAND

Island to Island Veterinary Service would like to remind you this is a great

time to schedule a physical exam for your four legged buddy!

The Advisory Committee has advertised for a manager to organize and oversee the Farmers Market events to be held across the Island between May and September, and to act as an information liaison between customers, vendors and the Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee will select a manager from the applicants at its next monthly meeting April 6, at 10 a.m. in the Thorne Bay City Council Chamber. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. Eight Farmers Market events have been scheduled so far this year. Coffman Cove may schedule a second event during the summer. Hollis will host its Farmers Market on September 7 in conjunction with the Annual Hollis Volunteer Fire Department Raffle and Yard Sale. Craig will host its second Farmers Market event September 25-27 during the Southeast Conference that is being hosted this year by Craig City. Naukati and Whale Pass have not yet decided to participate in the program. The Advisory Committee holds it regular monthly meeting the first Friday of every month, and from May through September, will hold the meetings in one of the communities that happens to be hosting a Farmers Market event that particular month. Booth cost categories are: a 6x6 space is $10 per day and includes one table. Each tent can hold three tables. A 10x10 space is $15 per day and includes one table. The POW Vocational & Technical Center Advisory Committee has selected a conceptual design for the new facility which will be presented to the Klawock City Council for their approval on April 3. The conceptual design has a large (56 x 56 foot) open work bay with welding, diesel, construction and storage areas surrounding it. There is a large lecture classroom which is adjacent to three smaller classrooms, all with movable walls, providing a 70 x 28 foot meeting space that can be used for conferences or other large gatherings. It also features a wet lab that can be used for water treatment, aquaculture, or health care classes requiring a laboratory environment. Offices and a covered outdoor work area round out the facility features. Thank you for the over 200 POW residents (so far) who have completed the POW V&T Needs Assessment Survey. Chamber members have an opportunity to take this survey which is a separate attachment to the email that delivers this newsletter.
