Nicole Sayer Informal Assessment # 1 January 26, 2012 1.

The students I will be working with are 4th graders at Lincoln Trail Elementary School in Mahomet, IL. There are five students that will be included in this assessment and instructional program. 2. The students will be working on their sentence writing skills and making sure they include all components of a complete sentence. 3. When reading class starts the students are rather attentive but lose focus throughout the extent of the program. All the students have SLD and dramatic attention problems, so focusing on one task for too long is challenging. The students have a behavior management plan in place that is consistent across the board with every student, which allows the teacher to draw the students back into the lessons quickly. There are a couple students that struggle in sentence writing more than others, but all students can improve their writing abilities. 4. Prep Questions: What? What curriculum for reading and writing are the students currently using? Why? So I can use some of the materials in the curriculum and look at their current ways of learning writing. Answer: The students tap out unknown words on their desks by syllables. They sound out the word as they are tapping syllables, emphasizing on vowel sounds to distinguish, which vowels are in the word. What? What rules of sentence structure do the students know and understand? Why? This is to be assured that students know the rules of writing a sentence prior to instruction via background knowledge. Source Sped Teacher

They understand which types of punctuation marks are to be used in specific sentences, such as questions or exclamations. 5. Data Questions: What? Why? Throughout this assessment the students work has been inconsistent both individually and as a class, however, patterns were recognized in causing the inconsistency. On days that assessments were given where students did not receive instant feedback the scores were much lower. Behavior of students also affected the outcome of the scores. There were days where one student shut down and refused to do work so her scores brought down the class average significantly. Students tend to forget punctuation and capitalization in their sentences and are told to double check their sentences for these mistakes prior to turning them in. In furthering the development of the students sentence writing skills a cognitive strategy should be implemented in order for the students to remember the essentials of writing a sentence. In taking data to monitor progress with this program students should be monitored on an individual level, as in this assessment, along with keeping track of a class average. This will allow viewing progress of both the individual students and the class as a whole. This will help them in the future when asked to write stories, essays, papers etc. in classes.
