Aminuddin Baki

Aminuddin Baki was born on 6th January 1926 in a village in a small district called Chemor in Perak. He received early education in Sekolah Melayu Chemor from 1932 to 1936. After passing the 5th grade examination, he continued his studies in Sekolah Anderson, Ipoh, which was the best English school of the time with the best and most experienced teachers. Aminuddin studied in the school from 1936 to 1941. Around 1945-1946 he had begun to show interest in students association. He had particularly admired the Malay Students Association formed on 20th November 1945 in Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur. At that time it had only 11 members. This association later became Kesatuan Kesuratan Penuntut-penuntut Melayu formed in 11th February 1946. This society had formed a committee entrusted to unify all students associations in the country and Aminuddin was appointed as the secretary. At the same time he formed a Students Association in Perak known as Persatuan Pelajar-pelajar Melayu Insaf (PERMI) in April 1946. However his involvement was brief as in October 1947, he was accepted as a student in Raffles College, Singapore, a much touted institution in its time.

At this time UMNO was formed to protest against the formation of Malayan Union. At the same time, leaders of students association were encouraged to work towards the achievement of their goals. Due to that, Aminuddin and other student leaders decided to to form a much stronger organization. 7 associations had held a conference for two days in Jalan Tambun, Ipoh, and resulted in the formation of Gabungan Pelajar-pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) in 15 August 1948. Once again Aminuddin had only a brief stint in the new organization as he had been offered a place in Universiti Malaya, Singapore in 1949. At the time he was content to be able to observe the progress of the organization from afar. While in university he was taken an interest in teaching, and to know more he had registered as a temporary teacher in Anglo-Malay Evening School. He had taught at the school from 1949 to 1951. In 1950 he had continued to be active in GPMS and was appointed as Yang Dipertua within the organization. In the same year he had passed his Sarjana Sastera examination and the following year, received his Ijazah Kepujian Sarjana Sastera. Upon finishing his education, he had returned to Perak to become a teacher in Sekolah Inggeris Sultan Yusuf, Batu Gajah. In 1951 to July 1952, he taught in Sekolah Anderson. He then furthered his studies in education in Education Institution, London University under the Queens Scholarship.

He left Pulau Pinang aboard the ship SS Canton on 22nd July 1952. Aminuddin finished his studies in the next year with Masters of Methods in Education. Upon returning to Malaysia he was offered

a place in Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris di Tanjung Malim as a lecturer. His contribution to students and scholars alike includes introducing Islamic History although it was not included in official syllabus. In September 1955, Aminuddin was involved in preparing the Razak Education Report and in 1960; he was in the advisory committee for the Rahman Report.

At the age of 36, he was appointed the Chief Education Officer of Selangor. At the same time he was active in other organizations and associations such as University Malaya Senate, Al-Rahman Association, Persatuan Sejarah Tanah Melayu and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. General exams such as Sijil Rendah Pelajaran (SRP), Sijil .Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) were created due to his contribution. He also formed Lembaga Peperiksaan in year 1963. Aminuddin Baki had passed away due to heart attack after performing prayers on 24th December 1965. Aminuddin bin Baki was born on 26 January 1926 inChemur, Perak. He received his educationat the Anderson School, which wasthe best English school in Ipoh at thetime. Later he continued hisstudies at the University of Malaya (Singapore) and University of London. He has an excellent track recordineducation.

He was declared as "Father of Education"forhisservices and contributions in the field of education. He wasonceappointedas theChief Advisor for Education Malaysia. In order to improve the quality of education he haddraftedthe National Education Policy through theRazak Education Report in 1957andtheAbdul Rahman Talib Report in 1960. In addition, he sat in several committees established by the government to review or change the education system during the periodbefore and after the country achieved independence. Among these wasthe Sultan Idris Training College Strike InvestigationCommitteein 1950, the BarnesCommittee in 1951, the Government Investigation Committeeof Malay pupils'Weaknesses in entering Secondary Schools which was chaired by him. To date there are771 materials includingvariousdocument,pictures, newspaper clippings, publicationsand others which have been kept and preserved meticulouslyat the National Archives.

Aminuddin Baki while attending the UNESCO Conference in November 1964 Aminuddin Baki was also activelyinvolved inassociations and other organisations such as theUniversity of Malaya Senate, theAl-Rahman Association, the Malayan Historical Society andDewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. Awang Had Salleh

Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Awang Had Bin Salleh dilahirkan di Kampung Bagan Pulau Betong, Mukim Balik Pulau, Pulau Pinang pada hari Ahad, 24 Jun 1934 dan dibesarkan di Kedah sejak berumur kira-kira lima tahun. Pendidikan awal yang diterimanya ialah di Sekolah Melayu Seberang Perak Laki-laki (sehingga darjah IV) dan Sekolah Melayu Sungai Korok Lama (sehingga darjah VI) - kedua-duanya itu di Alor Setar. Pendidikan lanjutan beliau ialah menerusi kelas khas sebelah petang di Sultan Abdul Hamid College yang diadakan untuk sebilangan Guru Melayu. Ini diikuti dengan pengambilan peperiksaan LCE (akhir 1956). Beliau kemudiannya belajar dengan sendiri untuk peperiksaan FMCE (akhir 1957) dan HSC (akhir 1959). Beliau masuk ke Universiti Malaya (1961-1964) dengan Biasiswa Kerajaan Persekutuan dan memperolehi Ijazah BA (Hons) dan kemudiannya mengikuti Program Bed secara sambilan (1966-68). Beliau melanjutkan pelajaran ke Standford University (1969-1972) menerusi Fellowship UM-Asia Foundation dan memperolehi PhD dalam Pendidikan dan Sosiologi. Pendidikan profesional beliau bermula dengan Program Sijil Perguruan di Sultan Idris Training College (1951-1954). Pendidikan profesional yang kedua diperolehinya dengan mengikuti Program Sijil Pengajaran Bahasa di Maktab Bahasa dalam tahun 1985. Kerjaya beliau bermula dengan jawatan Guru Pelatih di Sekolah Melayu Gunong, Kota Setar, Kedah dalam tahun 1950. Setelah tamat pengajian di SITC, beliau mengajar di Sekolah Melayu Derga, Alor Setar 1954-1956. Beliau ditukarkan ke Sultan Abdul Hamid College, sebagai Guru Bahasa Kebangsaan dalam tahun 1957. Tempoh khidmatnya di situ dimanfaatkannya untuk menyediakan diri untuk mengambil peperiksaan FMCE pada akhir tahun tersebut. Setelah tamat pengajian di Maktab Bahasa, beliau kembali bertugas di SAHC hingga ke pertengahan tahun. Selepas itu beliau memegang jawatan Penolong Pensyarah di Day Training Centre, Alor Setar sehingga menyambung pelajaran ke Universiti Malaya pada pertengahan 1961. Setelah tamat pengajian di Universiti Malaya, beliau dilantik sebagai Pegawai Pelajaran dalam Perkhidmatan Pelajaran Persekutuan dan ditugaskan sebagai Pensyarah di Maktab Bahasa. Mulai 1966, beliau memulakan khidmat sebagai tenaga akademik di Universiti Malaya sehingga 1978. Semasa dalam perkhidmatan di Universiti Malaya, beliau memegang jawatan Penolong Pensyarah, Pensyarah, Profesor Madya dan akhirnya Profesor. Dari segi pentadbiran pula, beliau pernah memegang jawatan Dekan Fakulti Pendidikan dan kemudiannya, Timbalan Naib Canselor Hal Ehwal Pelajar. Kemudian, beliau dipinjamkan ke ITM sebagai Pengarah (1978-1980). Selepas itu, beliau dipinjamkan pula ke Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia sebagai Naib Canselor (1980-1984). Bila Universiti Utara Malaysia ditubuhkan, beliau dilantik menjadi Naib Canselor yang pertama (1984-1989). Selepas persaraan di UUM, beliau berkhidmat sebagai Penasihat

Dalam kegiatan penulisan, beliau melibatkan diri dalam penulisan kreatif (cerpen, novel, drama dan puisi) dari tahun 1954 hingga kira-kira tahun 1990. Beliau pernah menulis buku-buku untuk pra-sekolah, sekolah rendah dan sekolah menengah. Kegiatan menulis kertas kerja ilmiah dan rencana untuk majalah dalam bidang pendidikan bahasa, kesusasteraan dan kebudayaan masih berterusan hingga sekarang. Pada masa ini, beliau masih meneruskan kegiatan kemasyarakatan dalam beberapa buah pertubuhan sosial dan semenjak bersara, beliau ikut serta dalam sebilangan kecil badan korporat swasta. Sebagai Presiden, beliau terus menerajui Persatuan Suluh Budiman (sejak 1973) dan Persatuan Pendidikan Malaysia (sejak 1975). Penganugerahan negara yang diterima beliau ialah Johan Mangku Negara (JMN), 1975, Dato' Setia Diraja Kedah (DSDK) 1978, dan Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM), 1982. Penganugerahan akademik yang diterima beliau ialah Honorary Fellow ABE (UK), 1983, HonLLB (Brock) 1986, Distinguished Fellow ISIS (Malaysia) 1990, Hon DLitt (Kebangsaan) 1997, dan gelaran Profesor Emeritus (Universiti Utara Malaysia), 1997. Tan Sri Prof Dr. Awang Had Salleh, was born on 24 June 1934 in Kampung Bagan Pulau Bentong, Pulau Pinang. He received his early education at the Pulau Betung, Balik Pulau Malay School and his secondary education at Seberang Perak Malay School, Kedah. In 1951, he enrolled himself at the Sultan Idris Teachers Training College, Tanjung Malim, Perak and later at the Language Institute, Bukit Senyum, Johor Bharu in 1958. Then, in 1961 he studied at the University of Malaya, where he graduated with Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 1964 and with a Masters degree in Education from the same university in 1967. Subsequently, he continued his studies further at the Stanford University California, USA where he obtained his doctorate in 1969, specialising in Education and Sociology. He also studied at the University of Lancaster, United Kingdom to enhance his skill and knowledge in the field of Academic Studies and Management.

Apart from being a well-known and active figure in the academic world, Tan Sri Prof. also produced some creative works. 1966 happen to be his most important year in his writing career of which two of his works, 'Merah, Kuning Biru' (anthology of short stories) and 'Biru Warna' (novel) were published a book form. His works on drama 'Buat Menyapu Si Air Mata' was published in 1975. In the field of writing and publishing, he has produced a number of books, articles and working papers which focussed more on education, language and culture. In appreciation of his services and contributions, he was bestowed several awards which, among others, include the Johan Mangku Negara (J.M.N.) in 1975, the Dato' Setia DiRaja Kedah (D.S.D.K) in 1978 which carries the title Dato' and the Panglima Setia Mahkota (P.S.M.) in 1982, which carries the title of Tan Sri, from DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong. In appreciation of his contributions in the field of education, he was awarded the 'Honorary fellow' A.B.E, United Kingdom in 1983, the 'Honorary Doctor of Law' by University of Brock, the 'Honorary Doctor of Letters' by the National University of Malaysia (UKM) and 'Professor Emeritus' by the Northern University of Malaysia (UUM). He was also conferred the 'Distinguished Follow of ISIS' Malaysia.

Biru Warna ialah kisah cinta dan novel sulung Awang Had Salleh yang diterbitkan oleh Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka buat kali pertama pada 1966. Ia mengemukakan watak Melayu dan bukan Melayu untuk menghayatkan kehidupan 1960-an yang penuh dengan konflik yang berhubung dengan keluarga,jurang generasi, dan prasangka perkauman, serta pertentangan aliran nilai moden dan tradisi.
