Beer to stop flowing at Gambrinus

Corey Stanford Gazette

Cameron Smith Gazette Staff Bad news is brewing for beer lovers. Local pub Gambrinus is officially giving up its title as Londons premier craft beer repository and re-opening as a restaurant under new ownership. Our owner decided to sell it, and were closing doors as of the 14th, Milos Kral, general manager of Gambrinus, explained. We had just turned a corner and our business has been increasing. According to Kral, the establish-

ment will introduce special menus and prices for its remaining days to celebrate and thank the dedication of Gambrinus frequenters. The last few days we are hanging around to say goodbye to our supporters, Kral said. We just want to say thank you to everyone who helped make us one of the best beer places in Ontario. Kral also made note of his desire to re-open at a new location and continue his dedication to craft beer. Nothing would make me happier, he said. I have all the inten-

tions of opening somewhere else, its just a matter of time. We are looking to the Gambrinus army to help us look for somewhere in the London core that will fit 50 to 60 people, so we can bring craft beer back where it belongs. However, the end of Gambrinus means a new start for restaurant owner Josh Stall, who just purchased the location. The current owner [...] is moving back to Toronto with his family this summer and continuing on with his life, Stall explained. Im moving a restaurant Ive been play-

ing with for seven years back into the city. This restaurant, called Upfront Cafe, was originally located in Stratford. Its style and cuisine promise to be a notable change from Gambrinus. What we currently have is [...] eclectic international food, Stall explained. Its very authentic international cuisine. As for beer aficionados grieving the loss of their go-to brew venue, Stall said his establishment would still be able to quench their thirst. Theyre all nervous were not

going to sell beer anymore, Stall said. We are continuing to sell beer, absolutely. I cant guarantee well have 130 [different varieties] by the bottle, but well try to have 50. It was a beautiful list of beer, and I wish I could have drank my way through the whole thing. But [at the new restaurant] there will be lots of beer and a bigger wine list, Stall concluded.

Helicopter parents dont damage kids

taylor rodrigues Gazette Staff Mom and dad may actually know best. A recent study found parental involvement supports university students development. Researchers presented their findings at the 2012 National Association of Student Personnel Administrators convention. The presentation gave highlights from a four-year longitudinal study that was commissioned by NASPA on the impact of parental involvement on student development during the college years, Sheri King, assistant director of student affairs at the University of Georgias Griffin campus, said. King explained during students first and fourth years, parents took a survey on parental involvement, and students took the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Assessment. The SDTLA is a well-known assessment tool that measures human development in three main categories: purpose, autonomy and mature interpersonal relationships. According to King, parents can hinder their childs development by being too involved, but most parents do not fit this category. In my opinion, the term helicopter parent is not representative of the majority of parents. It implies that all parents are overlyinvolved, overbearing, and not willing to let their students handle situations on their own, King said. Although there are parents who fit this description, it is really a small

arts council unveils London culture plan

Connor Hill Gazette Staff The London Heritage Council and The London Arts Council presented their plan for revitalizing Londons art and culture scene April 3 at the London Convention Centre to an audience of 400. [The Cultural Prosperity Plan] has the capacity to broaden understanding and collaborations, enhance Londons continued evolution as a leading community in Canada for cultural workers to live, incubate new ideas, and deliver culture to all facets of our community, Andrea Hawla, executive director of the London Heritage Council, said. At the moment, the culture plan is in the early stages. The councils have just begun consulting members of the community. The beauty of this process is that were not going into the process with the plan already written, Hawla said. The Convention Centre presentation also included a chance for attendees to bring up their ideas and concerns. Feedback from the event was excellent as people were given an opportunity to participate at the grassroots level. Londoners also got a chance to share their opinions with the London Heritage Council at a meeting at the Forest City Gallery before the presentation. Julia Beltrano, the gallerys director, arranged the event. I spoke with Hawla about setting up an information session at

The London Police Service has released a most wanted list in response to the riots that occurred March 17 on Fleming Drive. During the riot, partiers hurled pieces of wood at officers. According to a London Police press release, 25 individuals have been arrested as of April 411 of whom were Fanshawe students. A total of 56 criminal charges have been laid against these individuals. London Police are now asking for the assistance of the public in locating five individuals involved. Sean Previl

SeekingArrangements.com released their top 10 list for finding a sugar daddy this week. London ranked fourth in the country. Guys on dating sites tend to inflate their net worth and income by almost 30 per cent, Brandon Wade, chief executive officer of the site, explained. So we actually discounted a lot of the self-reported information to come up with the numbers we came up with. The results, Wade stressed, had an important message. First and foremost, I want to dispel a lot of the myths and stereotypes of what being a sugar daddy, and a sugar baby, is, Wade emphasized. A lot of people, when they think of a sugar daddy, they say hes very old, he loves young women, and hes lecherous. However, Wade asserted this was not the case. When you look at the data, [the truth] is actually quite the opposite, he said. [A sugar daddy] is about 40-years-old, he is pretty successful and wealthy, and hes generous. Its not a 70-year-old man dating an 18-year-old girl. Sean Previl

York rejects $30 million from think tank

megan devlin Gazette Staff York University has decided to walk away from a proposed $30 million deal with the Centre for International Governance Innovation, the privately owned think-tank of former RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie. It was determined that there was non-sufficient internal support [at York] to move forward and therefore the decision was made not to proceed with the arrangement with CIGI, Joanne Rider, chief spokesperson for York University, said. This lack of support came particularly from the Osgoode Hall Law School at York, whose main concern was that the deal inhibited academic freedom. James Turk, executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers, agreed. The agreement York signed was a terrible one. It violated basic principles of academic autonomy and academic integrity, Turk said. It was the first university that Ive known that was willing to do that in order to get money. He explained the issue was that the agreement would create a panel made up of half York faculty and the other half would be made of representatives from CIGI. These CIGI representatives would influence what would be studied with the research dollars. The university hiring processes went out the window, Turk said. They were letting CIGI sit at the table and have veto power over which research areas each chair would be in, their specific financial terms, and expectations for what the research plans for each chair would be. However, Fred Kuntz, vice-pres-

were happy the program is not going ahead as it was signed. the villain here is not mr. Balsillie, its york
executive director of the canadian association of university teachers

James turk,

ident of public affairs at CIGI, asserted these claims were false. Academic freedom is guaranteed under Yorks existing policies and practices governing academic freedom, Kuntz said. We entirely yielded to their existing policies and practices. Everything that York has in place, their rules about academic freedom, applied entirely to this program without exception. The only area where CIGI had a veto is over what themes our research dollars would fund. We were going to donate this money to a program to fund research chairs and all we wanted was to be able to say what are the broad themes those research chairs are about, Kuntz explained. CAUT was saying CIGI shouldnt even have a say in how their money is used at all, Kuntz continued. They should donate the money to York and York can

decide what areas of research will be researched. Who in the world thinks thats reasonable? However, according to Turk, even broadly specifying how research dollars should be spent compromises a universitys academic integrity. A university is the one place in a democratic society where all sides and all questions can be looked at, but at the end of the day the academics are not beholden to any particular interests, Turk said. Otherwise, they just become job shops for private interests. Were happy the program is not going ahead as it was signed, Turk continued. The villain here is not Mr. Balsillie, its York. That is, the fact that a wealthy donor might want to shape how his money is spent is not a big surprise. That a university would agree to it is the surprise.

Forest City Gallery as an open discussion group to collect some of that data so that artists and people who enjoy the arts could weigh in, she said. I think that one of the major things that can be done is to recognize the organizations and the artists that we have here and celebrate those that are here, Sandra De Salvo, director of the London ARTS Project, said. By doing that, I think

were going to attract more organizations and artists to the space and of course that will expand the public that attends and supports those artists and organizations. Another aim of the CPP is to show how culture plays a big part in peoples lives, whether they know it or not. Were helping them to identify with how ingrained culture is in their lives so they can self-identify and participate naturally in the conversation, Hawla said. We

often hear [...] that a person does not consider him or herself a culture person. This statement is just not realistic in todays society. The webpage for the CPP lists several activities which qualify as cultural. If you listen to music, read books, watch movies, or participate in sports, you are taking part in a cultural activity. Instead of going to another summer blockbuster, Beltrano suggests people try seeing an independent movie or try visiting an art gallery

or museum. Lots of these art galleries are free or by donation, Beltrano said. Theyre free or by donation for a reason. We want to have as many people come out and enjoy what we have to offer as possible. De Salvo also urged citizens of London to go out independently and discover for themselves the

citys art scene. There are a lot of Londoners who are not aware of the great things that are happening here, De Salvo said. And those Londoners, when they discover them, are amazed they didnt know this was happening right under their own noses.

number of parentsyet these are the ones who gain attention by complaining to administrators. The presentation concluded that parental orientation, university websites, and other publications should be as comprehensive as possible to address the topic of parental involvement and student development. Parents have been a feature of the [university] experience forever, and [] we try to give parents information about the rhythm of the academic year, Susan Grindrod, associate vice-president of housing and ancillary services at West-

ern, said. According to Grindrod, Western already offers a parent orientation through the Summer Academic Orientation program. The program talks to parents about the transition to university and how they can help their students. She added Western has been enhancing its parental part of the website over the last couple of years. It is always a balance in the transition. When [students] go away to university, [parents] lose that parental oversight and students and parents have to work that out, Grindrod explained. Some want more information, and some dont.

King cautioned people against making large generalizations from their presentation because they received a much smaller sample during the second round of surveys. As well, their research had a disproportionate amount of respondents from high socioeconomic backgrounds. There is a common goal shared by allstudent, parent, and institutionand that goal is to see the student develop into a young adult able to succeed in a global society, King said. I truly believe that when parents are given parameters, they will work within those parameters towards the common goal.

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay. Zipcar is a service that allows you to rent a car for a few hours a day. After your rental time is up, you return the car and go back to being a bus-riding pedestrian. The company is introducing their service to 11 campuses across Canada, letting students rent a car for as low as $10 an hour. Unfortunately, Western will not be one of these new markets. But should we be? The London Transit Commission does a decent job getting students to and from campus, and its nice having a massive discount on the public transportation system. On the other hand, trips from point A to point B that do not involve Westerns campus, or happen to take place on weekends, can end up being rather maddening affairs. Furthermore, many carless students do have licenses, so maybe a cheap and easy car rental service would be useful enough to make the service a success in the Forest Cityeven if only for things like going to the grocery store or a trip out to the mall. Although the idea seems nice, there are some downsides to a Zipcar presence on university campuses. Being able to rent a car when you need it is nice, but with only one central hub on campus, the cars might not get much use. If students have to bus to campus in the first place, and drop the car back off on campus as well, busing or cabbing might end up being just as cheap and easy for students. If anything, it might be even more inefficient and time-consuming. However, this problem can easily be fixed. Small satellite hubs to pick up and drop off cars would make the idea more attractive and easier to use. One other thing to consider is the possible backlash from furious cab companies. Taxi services have a history of trying to keep a transportation monopoly in the city, and may not like the fact that students would be able to pick up their own cars and drive around. Overall, this could be a good idea so long as its implemented properly. We have services like Purple Bikes to rent and use bicycles on campus, but during Londons five-month winter, many people probably look outside and wish they had a car sitting in their driveway. Zipcar may not be able to give everyone their dream car, but done properly, it could come close.

in the history of the world, no one has ever washed a rented car.

Zip ideal for about time liquor laws loosened up short trips
Zalt of the Earth
aaron Zaltzman news editor Its a scenario were all too familiar withits 10 oclock on a Saturday night and youre all ready to go out, when you find yourself tragically out of beer. If you lived in the United States, or even Quebec, you could simply pop on over to the local convenience store and pick up a six-pack for the night. Unfortunately, if youre reading this, you probably have the misfortune of living in Ontario. Independent groups are currently pushing for an amendment to Canadas liquor laws that will prohibit the transportation of wine across provincial boundaries. This effort highlights some of Ontarios own outdated and illogical drinking restrictions. For example, the drinking age in Ontario was raised from 18 to 19 in 1978 to prevent high school students from drinking. However, high school was shortened by a year in 2003, and the drinking age remained the same, leaving first-year students sober for a whole quarter of their precious four-year stint at a post-secondary institution. Of course, one could always argue for the inherent value of depriving youngsters of alcohol, even though the drinking age is a year above the age of majority that allows people to vote and die for their country. However, when it comes to the centralization of liquor sales to just two stores, the arguments come down to pure greed. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario has been around since the days of Prohibition and does exactly what its name impliesit controls liquor in Ontario, to the point of a monopoly. The stores are the only places in Ontario that can sell spirits and the board not only limits the selection available, but has also failed to keep prices at a competitive level, using social responsibility as a justification for price fixing. In fact, aside from independent breweries, the only other place to buy beer in Ontario is the Beer Store, a cautionary tale that teaches us private monopolies are even more insidious than government ones. The only difference between the Beer Store and LCBO is that the formers profits dont all go to the province, or even the country. The controlling interest is now shared between Canadian and American companies. The provincial government is happy to allow anti-competitive practices disguised as social responsibility as long as they can make a profit off it, which this past year totalled $1.55 billion. It apparently doesnt matter to the McGuinty government that these practices harm the constituents the government is supposed to serve, as evidenced by McGuintys apathy towards a proposal to allow the sale of wine and beer in convenience stores during the most recent election. The Ontario government may dress this monopoly up as a matter of social protection, but the fact is, the current liquor laws are products of a bygone era, enacted during Prohibition to exert control over one of lifes greatest joys. There is no justification for this stagnant situation when other provinces, like Quebec and Alberta, have been able to evolve their own laws. A great man once said that alcohol was the cause of, and solution to, all of lifes problems. Right now the provincial government is part of the problemits time for them to be part of the solution.

Clubs not responsible for individual acts

Re: CGC mulls clubs policy complaint (April 3, 2012) To the Editor: Pro-Palestinian events have often resulted in witch-hunts on campus since student governments and administration dislike any actions that result in any controversy. Students for Palestinian Human Rights did not breach any University Students Council club policies. The USCs policies do not regulate the actions of individuals outside a club setting. Furthermore, it would be ludicrous if the USC uses this incident to create new policies that would restrict the thousands of students that are a part of the club system. The Clubs Governance Committees verdict will not only affect SPHR, but also every single student who decides to become an active member of a USC club. Batool Kanaan
English III VP Events, SPHR

To the Editor: The CGC met twice already and plan to meet again to discuss a policy that even the vice president student events says does not exist. As a fourth-year student who knows about wasting time on useless issues, even I am shocked at the CGCs priorities. How come Israel on Campus complaint receives more attention than all the other clubs? I am not afraid to say it. In fact, I am sick of it. What is all the fuss about? Is it because Israeli apartheid is involved? We are individuals with responsibilities and rights. A student club does not represent who I am, and vice-versa. If a resolution is passed that states that SPHR will be sanctioned because of individual actions, then I will never join a student club again. I would rather keep my independence. Walid Abu Daia

Egg-cellent decorating tips
Emily Fister Gazette Staff Amin Rehman, a Toronto artist and activist, blends traditional Arabic text with fluorescent commercialism in his exhibition, A is for at Westerns McIntosh Gallery. Presented in partnership with Westerns Islam and Democracy Conference, Rehman explores notions related to Islam and democracy from a heavily mediated perspective. The prominent A is for Allah is a tongue-in-cheek pastiche piece. A neon sign with cobalt blue glass, the work states, A is for Allah, A is for America. Rehman renders the long-existing tensions of American and Muslim politics as he illustrates an evident binary, commenting on the mass medias representation

of Islam. The accompanying piece states, God is on our side. Allah is on your side, echoing a post-9/11 American nationalist rhetoric. Rehman knows how to confront his viewer effectively. The bare walls of the intimate gallery are transformed with overlapping, roll-on wall text. The striking series juxtaposes both Arabic and traditional Anglophone texts. Using encaustic paint on boards, Rehman states in English-stylized Arabic font, All Americans are not CIA agents. All Pashtuns are not Taliban. In between the spaces is a capitalized serif fontInfinite Justice for someone means infinite injustice for others. Through this confrontational piece, the artist ponders which group is speaking louder, and who is being heard in North American media.

local artist blends tradition and commercialism

Rehman reproduces a few distinct Quran verses, but mostly plays on Arab-American tensions. Another striking piece in the exhibition is a pair of encaustic paintings. In the same English Arabicstyle text, Rehman states Global Empire and Manifest Destiny. Highly controversial and attentive to fine details, Rehman focuses his art on a Middle-Eastern narrative. His native Pakistani voice fuses with North American painting and sculpture, revealing a distinct disconnect between two very different cultures. However, this time, the discussion isnt one-sided. His Arab perspective is as brash as a neon 7/11 sign. The exhibition opened March 23 and will continue until April 14 at the McIntosh Gallery on campus.

the tables have sterned
ryan Stern sports editor Many times, talking heads have taken exception to the black suits that clog up the metaphoric arteries of Leafs Nation. Generally, I would tend to agree with pundits that Leafs fans are closer to the bottom of the barrel than the top, but on this occasion, I want to give them a pat on the back. There have been many times since the NHL lockout that I have unleashed profanity-filled rants at my television, calling fellow Leafs fans a series of names that are not publishable in anything but a Reddit thread. From the extreme optimism of fans, to the non-existent crowd noise, and even the lack of in-game intelligence displayed by the crowd as a whole, I hated it all. To say the least, Leafs fans can take a lesson in fanhood from their opponents to the East and WestMontreal and Winnipeg respectively. But today, for the first time in nearly half a decade, I can puff my chest out and take pride in the actions of Leafs fans. On March 29, as the Leafs flushed another season down the toilet, fans started serenading the squad with a chant that had nothing to do with them at all. Lets go Blue Jays, lets go Blue Jays was audible to all fans, both at the game and on television. This chant had the unique distinction of having nothing to do with the product on the ice, while, at the same time, having everything to do with the men wearing blue. The Leafs and Blue Jays are not in any sense a binary, but while Brian Burke is watching his back,

No, I am not attempting to compare baseball business to hockey businessbecause inherently, their player movement and contract structures are very differentbut I believe that Burke can learn a little from the philosophies of Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos. By lowering fan expectations, developing through the draft, and shielding themselves from media influence, the Jays have quietly crafted a team that Torontonians can be proud of. Burkes first try on building the Leafs will probably cost him his joband deservedly sobut if he has another shot at it, he should probably slow down his process and do a proper rebuild. Though it is tough to compare the Jays to the Leafs due to inherent differences in sports, comparisons are available throughout the NHL. Look at how the Penguins and Blackhawks built their teams. They stripped their team down, lost a lot of games for a few years, and now those players have Stanley Cup rings on their fingers. Leafs fans can survive a few years of not making the playoffs they have done so already. I dont think a few more years would make that much of a difference, but if the organization does not show a true commitment to becoming a perennial contender, as opposed to a team that will sneak into the playoffs for a few years, why should Leafs fans show undying support? I am not asking for a Stanley Cup title within the next few years, I am asking for one in my lifetime. If all the wings and beer dont catch up to me too soon, I am willing to wait a few years. Until that time comes, I will proudly be chanting along with those fans. Lets Go Blue Jays!

Style
Spring fashion trends sprouting up
Spring is in the air, which means its finally time to ditch the parka and slap on the sandals and suntan lotion. Okaymaybe its alittle early for a beach party, but hopefully these trends will tide us over until then.

fastfact
Fake eyelashes were invented by d.w. griffith, a film director in the early 20th century, and were made from a wig.

How to steal their style

take a cue from these stylish western students to perk up your spring looks

Girls:
Floral prints You know spring has arrived when floral prints start to spout up around campus. This season, floral prints are getting a bolder look including sharper colours and heartier arrangements. According to Fashion Magazine, the more robust the arrangement, the better. Orange Sure, pastels and soft feminine lines are a staple every spring, but this year, why not embrace a brighter shade? Orange, tangerine, mandarin and clementine are the in colours this spring. Dresses, jackets and even the tailored coat have all embraced the trend. Orange jumpsuits have also been spotted on the runwaybet you never thought those would be trendy. Metallic heels Dont be afraid to shine this springmetallic heels can add a needed pop to any outfit. And this season, its not gold, but silver that earns the top prize. Kaitlyn McGrath

Name: Cathy Quach

Program: first year, media, information and technoculture Steal her style: cathy keeps it cool by layering black and white basics. pull out three or four pieces from your own closetdark jeans or leggings, t-shirts and cardigansin neutrals, and pair them together. add a statement necklace, a killer pair of boots and a cropped leather jacket for a look thats effortlessly cool. try blending a mix of cheap basics and vintage-feel statement pieces in other palettes too. why not try all grey, or even blueon-blue, for a look thats easy and trendy.

Guys:
The blue suit Clean-cut, tailored suits are a timeless trend, but this spring, watch for the classic suit to get a colourful twist. The blue suitthink lighter than navy, but not quite pastel was spotted all over the runway this season. To add some variety, pair the suit with a muted bluecollared shirt and youll be sure to stand out at any party. Nautical nonsense Ahoy matey! Maybe you wont actually be sailing the high seas, but you can still dress like it. Brightcoloured, knee-length swim trunks are making a splash on the runway this spring. And why not match your trunks with a sailor-striped knit? This season the nautical stripe goes beyond navy tones and comes in a wide range of colours and styles.

Name: Susie Hill

Program: graduate studies Steal her style: susie shows that black is anything but basic in this retro spring look. dont save your little dresses for special occasions you can easily transition them to a girly day outfit by pairing them with more casual accessories like a brown leather belt or bag. Keep jewelry minimal maybe a pair of dainty studs to keep the ensemble from looking too dressed-up for class. on a chillier day, toss on a denim jacket or coral cardigan to keep the look current but casual.

Name: Victoria Purdy

Program: second year, English Steal her style: Victoria looks cool while keeping warm with a sunny yellow jacketa lucky find at Forever 21, she says. Just because the wind is wicked, it doesnt mean you have to resort to dull grey hoodies and heavy coats. show your spring style with a bright trench in primary shades like yellow, red or blue for a youthful look thats sure to stand out in a crowd. when youre in a rush, toss it on over jeans and a t-shirt, or even an easy, breezy cotton dress, like Victoria. Just be sure to keep other colours in your outfit neutral so you dont look like a walking rainbow.
