MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS
September 21, 2011 EXAM #1.1 Directions. Please work as many of the six problems as you can on the enclosed pages. The readers will read all of the problems and assign a numerical grade to each problem. The scores of the four problems with the most points will be added to determine an exam grade. A maximum of 100 points can be earned on the exam. It is important to show your work on all problems except #1 and #2. Correct answers may not receive full credit if the reasoning and computational paths to the answers are not clearly indicated. (The readers of the exams will not assume responsibility for nding the next steps in haphazard presentations.) Please enclose each of your answers in a box. Please work without the aid of notes, books, computers, calculators, phones and other people. The course instructor may be in the room at the time of the examination acting as a resource. The examination is being given on an honor system. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Total

1. (25 pts.) This problem consists of three parts. Each part will be assigned 12 pointsonly answers in boxes will be read. No partial credit will be assigned. A maximum of 25 points can be earned on this problem. (One point is free.) A. (12 pts.) Let f (z, w) = sin (z) cos (w), (z, w) R2 . Find an explicit form for the value of fz (, ) .

B. (12 pts.) Let f (x, y) = xy, (x, y) R2 and w = 1 2 , 5 5 .

Compute the value of the directional derivative of f at (1, 1) in the direction of w.

C. (12 pts.) Let f (x, y) = ex ln (y), < x < , 0 < y and let (x0 , y0 ) = (1, e). Let S denote the surface modeled by f . Find a unit vector n normal to the tangent plane to S at (x0 , y0 , f (x0 , y0 )).

2. (25 pts.) This problem consists of three parts. Each part will be assigned 12 pointsonly answers in boxes will be read. No partial credit will be assigned. A maximum of 25 points can be earned on this problem. (One point is free.) A. (12 pts.) C. (12 pts.) For the function f (x, y) = xy, (x, y) R2 nd and classify all of the critical points.

3. (25 pts.) Let and denote two angles in a non-degenerate triangle. Let z = f (, ) = sin () sin () sin ( ( + )). Find a scalar model for the tangent plane to the surface modeled by f at (, , f (, )) = , , f , . (One can think of 3 3 3 3 f (, ) as the product of the sines of the angles of the triangle.)
