The Students
Please describe the student population served by your school. % Free and Reduced Lunch: 15% Average Attendance (Average % of students in school each day): 90-100% We are a public, K-12 high school in the North Atlanta suburbs providing full service instruction of a state-mandated, standards-based academic curriculum. We accommodate varying levels of need through regular, co-taught, collaborative and small-group classes. In addition, we offer a full complement of elective coursework, including fine arts and career-tech classes. Demographically, 89% of the students in the school are white, 5% are Hispanic, and 3% are African-American, while the remaining 3% are classified as Asian or Other. 15% of the student population is eligible for free or reduced lunch, while 11% of all students are eligible for special education services. This grant application is being submitted in order to secure funding to support one segment of our student body, our special education population.

Title of Project: Bringing Low Readers Higher With Hi-Lo Books Description of Project & Project Rationale: Special Education students, who comprise 11% of our student population, represent an underserved segment of our student body. The majority of students in this group are struggling and reluctant readers. Because all of these students, with the exception of our functional-level students who are working towards an alternative diploma, will be required to take and pass statemandated End of Course and Graduation tests, and because these tests typically require a high degree of reading comprehension skill, we feel it necessary to obtain both print and electronic resources targeted specifically at this student group in an effort to improve their reading comprehension skills, and thereby increase their chances of passing these state-mandated tests and increasing their overall literacy, equipping them to become lifelong readers and learners. According to Michael F. Graves, Raymond A. Philppot and other researchers, high interest, low vocabulary-level books can be an important tool in helping struggling readers to become more competent, a necessary step in improving our special needs students reading skills in preparation not only for high-stakes tests, but also for their futures as lifelong learners and productive members of society. In our increasingly technology-dominated world, our students are growing up with a greater level of comfort with computers, e-readers and other portable digital devices. These digital

natives are more likely to gravitate toward reading presented in an electronic format. Some of the features of e-books, like single page displays that allow students to focus on the text at hand without worrying about the pages to follow, make them more attractive alternatives to print books, according to Christopher Harris, system library director for the Genesee Valley, New York school library system. Some students, however, may not be as comfortable with e-book technologies, and may prefer print versions. Because our current library holdings include a limited number of high-interest, lowvocabulary texts certainly nowhere near enough to accommodate our struggling readers with special needs we are requesting funding to purchase a variety of high-interest, low-reading level texts, to include both fiction and non-fiction titles, in both traditional print and electronic book format. Because we have access to over 30 e-readers in our media center, this request will not include funding to purchase e-readers. We feel like this request is in keeping with your organizations philosophy of funding projects that include technology only if they express a strong connection to the mission of your organization, that of fostering children's literacy. We strongly feel that with the generous help of the Snapdragon Book Foundation, we will be able to effectively improve the literacy of an underserved and disadvantaged segment of our student population by providing them with reading material appropriate to their individual needs.

We are requesting funding to purchase a variety of high-interest, low-reading level texts, to include both fiction and non-fiction titles, in both traditional print and electronic book format. These materials will be ordered from a variety of vendors, and include several multi-volume sets. All materials are geared to the interest levels of high school age students, and are written at a variety of reading levels in order that the maximum number of students and their respective needs can be accommodated.
