ASME Section VIII, Division 2 Pressure Vessel Analysis

Predictive Engineering FEA Consulting Femap and NX Nastran

NQA-1 Approved Summary: Predic've Engineering has over eleven years of experience in the applica'on of ASME Sec'on VIII, Div. 2. In the nuclear eld, Predic've has produced NQA-1 seismic, buckling and fa'gue analysis reports on some of the most complicated vessels installed at the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobiliza'on Plant. Working collabora'vely with DOEs contractor, Predic've has pioneered many of the seismic and buckling analysis procedures based on interpreta'on of ASCE 4-98 and ASME Sec'on VIII, Div. 2 Codes for pressure vessels (PV) containing large internal PV components. Short List of Projects: The following slides presents a few of the projects that Predic've Engineering has performed the ASME analysis calcula'ons.

NQA-1 Approved

Shell and tube heat exchanger per ASME Sec'on VIII, Div 2 analyzed for design, opera'ng, buckling and seismic loading. The nal design of the vessel required 14 design itera'ons due to internal bae constraints imposed by the client.

NQA-1 Approved

NQA-1 analysis work for a nuclear waste containment vessel. Hydrodynamic mass and damping was analyzed by ASCE 4-98. Skirt buckling and other structural elements were analyzed using AISC N690. The seismic work was by response spectrum dynamic analysis method using site specic input response spectra. The overall governing code was ASME VIII, Div 1 and 2. This vessel represents just one of nineteen vessels analyzed under QL-1 requirements.

NQA-1 Approved

Complex vessel analysis using seismic response analysis method to simulate the base earthquake mo'on. ASCE 4-98 was followed with seismic loads applied in the three orthogonal direc'ons and then summed using the SRSS method. This combined load case was combined with thermal and pressure loads to validate the pressure vessel design. Complete fa'gue calcula'ons were done using the rainfall coun'ng method per ASME guidelines.

Another type of pressure vessel is that of a submarine hull. This hull was analyzed under the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Rules for Building and Classing Underwater Vehicles, Systems and Hyperbaric Facili'es. Hand calcula'ons were done on the basic hull design followed by a nite element model of the hull. Li`ing loads and hatch cover calcula'ons were also performed. The submarine is under construc'on.
