Reference Collection Evaluation and Recommendations

According to TitleWise Collection Analysis, MCESs collection numbers over 13,000. With a student body of just over 600, this means that there are almost 23 books per student. The reference collection itself consists of 122 items, making up less than 1% of the total collection. The average year of publication for items in the reference collection is 1998. This means that most books in this section are over 14 years old. Many major world events such as 9/11 have occurred since many of these books were published, including the set of World Book Encyclopedias from 1989. There are no almanacs in the reference collection even though students are required to be familiar with their function on state-wide standardized tests. Both of the atlases are also outdated and showing severe signs of wear. Given a budget of just over $2000, I have put together a purchase order of items to address these needs. Despite the availability of online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia, I feel it is most important for the library to have an up-to-date set of encyclopedias and recommend purchasing the 2012 World Book set. I would further supplement these print encyclopedias with World Book Kids Online, an online encyclopedia from the same publishers which could be used in individual classrooms. I also included titles which addressed specific student research needs I was made aware of during the semester such as African American leaders and important inventors from around the world.
