What is The Transgender Day of Remembrance? We all live in a society that misunderstands and fears any deviation from the gender rules they have been taught. This unfortunate fact has created an environment that is the direct cause of depression and anxiety among anyone that does not fit into the boxes the world has prescribed for them. Each year, many transgender individuals and other people are victims of violent hate crimes based on their actual or perceived gender identity. Others, take their own lives. In-fact, the result of a study conducted by The National center for Transgender Equality revealed that, almost 50% of the transgender people from the US have attempted suicide at least once. The unfortunate effects of our societies strict gender binary system are fatal. On the Transgender Day of Remembrance, held annually, on November 20th, we mourn and remember those in our community who have been lost. Local transgender writers, artists, and musicians come to share their work to honor those we have lost. We read the names of all of the transgender individuals whos lives have been lost over the past year. It is a time to stand together and remind each other that we are not alone. Who is Trans-E-Motion? Trans-e-motion is the largest transgender organization in the central valley, providing advocacy and support to the transgender community. The central valley is a largely unaccepting, and intolerant area when it comes to dealing with transgender individuals and issues and Trans-E-Motion works to provide educational, medical, and career settings the tools required to aid this under served community. Trans-emotion has helped transgender individuals find local resources for employment, medical care, and legal aid, as well as hold social events and activities in addition to support groups. All of these things help to bring hope and happiness to a largely disenfranchised community. Why Support Us? In the central valley there is little support and acceptance for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and especially transgender individuals. We are here, for the sake of the transgender youth in schools that are bullied and harassed, for the transgender individual who has lost support of some and sometimes all of their family members, for the transgender individual receiving harassment at work or can not get employed at all, for all the transgender individuals who feel alone and dont want to live any more, and finally for all of the transgender individuals who have been killed or have taken their own lives, we honor them. Without us, this support and hope would not exist for the transgender community of the central valley. Therefore, it is imperative that we receive support so that we may continue our work for the transgender community.
