Principles of Rainscreen Cladding

As increasingly stringent building regulations demand ever greater attention to issues of energy efficiency, rear ventilated cladding systems are growing in popularity as the ideal, cost-effective solution for both new and old buildings. Rear ventilated systems offer guaranteed performance, withstanding even extremely unfavourable conditions such as those experienced in the textiles or brewing industries, or within a swimming pool or aquarium. There is currently no other walling system able to maintain its performance so effectively, protecting against dampness, heat, noise and fire to the required standards regardless of the internal or external conditions. For most effective performance, in addition to window apertures and other interruptions, ventilation openings should be created at the base and top of the cladding area and protected by closures or mesh to keep out birds and other creatures. Behind the cladding panels there should be a cavity of at least 30mm, and minimum inlet and outlet gaps should be provided as follows: Up to five storeys: 10 mm continuous Five to fifteen storeys: 15 mm continuous Fifteen storeys and above: 20 mm continuous One of the primary benefits is that the uninterrupted full-height ventilation paths behind the cladding ensure that, should any moisture penetrate the joints, it is quickly and effectively dissipated.

Product Range
Aluminium Composite
Aluminium composite material is a lightweight versatile cladding panel solution of a sandwich type construction consisting of a polyethylene or phenolic core bonded between two thin aluminium skins, the outer coated with PVDF Kynar 500 and an acrylic primer to the inner, both coil coated giving a very durable external finish. Aluminium composite provides an exceptional level of flatness together with corrosion resistance and has a very low coefficient of expansion. The material is simple to fabricate, rigid and extremely durable and lends itself to being shaped into a variety of architectural features and designs.

Copper
Copper lends itself particularly well to cladding facades features because its properties greatly enhance and extend the possibilities of design, due to high durability and excellent corrosion resistance, good formability and malleability make it easy to fabricate, low cleaning and maintenance costs and increases its appeal as it ages. Copper is available in a variety of finishes from a classic bright colouring, to a distinctive pre-patination.

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel offers an extremely durable, low maintenance cost material which has excellent damage resistance, particularly when using textured surfaces as minor damage becomes less noticeable. Optional flatness is another important feature when using stainless steel for faade cladding, not only in its appearance but in the ease in which the material handles and fabricates into a variety of shapes and design options. Stainless steel probably has the largest range of textured finishes as well as its traditional satin and mirror finish.

Solid Aluminium
Solid Aluminium gives the flexibility of design with its many thicknesses, ready availability and choice of pre and post coated material and an almost inexhaustible range of colours. Solid Aluminium probably allows the widest flexibility for fabrication with the added advantage of being lightweight and very durable.

Zinc
Zinc is naturally resistant to corrosion, is extremely durable and does not require costly maintenance. In addition, the flexibility, malleability and versatility of zinc make it simple to fabricate and combined with its pleasing appearance, make it an interesting material choice for use on building project facades. With time, it forms an attractive light grey patina.
